Here's the general briefing for "Destruction of the 112th" --

Title: Destruction of the 112th

Type: French Attack (Historical)

Date: September 13th, 1944

Location: Dompaire, France

Weather: Clear, Dry

- Description -

The U.S. 3rd Army was racing east and south to meet up with units from the U.S. 7th Army, which was driving north during its "Champagne Campaign". The French 2nd Armored Division was part of the 3rd Army, and was racing alongside the U.S. 79th Infantry Division. Meanwhile, Hitler was determined to smash into Patton's south flank with a Panzer Army-sized counterattack. This counterattack was folly, since the forces weren't available, and some of the forces detailed for the attack, like the 11th Panzer Division, were busy doing other important tasks. However, the 112th Panzer Brigade, a brand-new brigade under the command of General Luettwitz, was committed to put a dent in Patton's plans.

The 112th left Epinal in two columns. One column went straight west towards Vittel, while the other column took a more southerly route so that General Luettwitz could hit Vittel from two directions. The northern column stopped for the night in Dompaire. The French Combat Command L seized Vittel on September 12th, continued east, and stopped near Dompaire and Damas. Civilians told Colonel Langlade that a large German force was at Dompaire. A recon-by-ear confirmed that fact, and Colonel Langlade made plans to trap and destroy the Germans...

Designer's Notes:

This is based on "The Lorraine Campaign", a US Army "Green Book." The scenario map is based on the description of the terrain in the book, and the aerial photograph in the book. Unfortunately, the photo only shows the center, so a resident of the real Dompaire might not recognize the town in the scenario! The French and German OOB's are given in the book, but are drastically scaled down for the scenario. Hopefully, there is only a 50% chance that the 112th will be destroyed in this scenario. So, this isn't a 1:1 simulation of the battle, but should be enjoyable for either side PBEM or as the French against the AI. This scenario is difficult, so skill will play a big part, but you will also need luck! For another look at this battle, play "The Chasseurs Countercharge".

Historical Results:

Colonel Langlade sent one column under Colonel Minjonnet to cut off any possible reinforcements and strike from one direction, while Lt. Col. Massu took another column to hit the Germans from a different direction. French fire rained down on the surprised Germans from all directions, and the noose slowly tightened on the Germans. Meanwhile, the German southern column headed for Dompaire, but Colonel Langlade had troops in position to meet that threat (the relief attempt is not depicted in this scenario). The Germans lost 90% of their tanks in Dompaire, and 50% of the tanks in the southern column in one day of fighting.
