John Kettler
Wanted to let the Mac troops know that the current? issue of MAC ADDICT has an extensive, detailed, and well illustrated section on upgrading older Macs of all sorts, even original iMacs. Naturally, the tower configurations are both easiest to do and offer the most upgrade options. Sadly, though I could run my 233 MHz iMac up to a 600 MHz G3 and plop in more RAM, nothing can be done about the disastrous 2 MB of VRAM situation. Those of you with more video horsepower, though, can get big performance jumps by using some of the techniques described. Jarmo
Testify! My 8600/233Mhz shipped in -97, and without any 3D acceleration. But with the help of a new Sonnet 400Mhz G3 processor, Ati PCI Radeon 32MB card and extra 16GB SCSI drive, I'm running CMAK ...well enough, sort of. And as it happens, I needed all the upgrades just to run CMBO... I'd really need a new mac, but that'd end my CM career.
Mr. Bingley
fwiw, you can pick up a b&w g3 on ebay for under $300, toss in a 900mhz g3 card from owc, and you'll be fine! that's what i'm using
