Comparative Analyses of Armies

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any analyses (e.g., books) that qualitatively compare WW2 armies (quality of battlefield performance, doctrine, organization etc.)?

I have read many books that touch on this, but am wondering if there is a book dedicated (or largely dedicated) to this subject.

Most recently I read "Eisenhower's Lieutenants" which (among many other things) highlighted a great debate at the time--did the US or the UK have the more effective army? The debate had corresponding implications for degree of control over SHAEF.

Jonathan House wrote a paper for the US Army Command & General Staff College, called " Toward Combined Arms Warfare." He elaborated on this theme in his book, "Combined Arms in the Twentieth Century." The paper is quite large, and may be all you need for your purposes. Either might be what you're looking for, since they focus at the tactical level.
