German & Soviet large ammo markings/ pics?

Recommended Posts

I know this isn't completely CMBB related...

I am making a set of dummy large caliber ammo for German and Soviet tank guns and field guns. Does anyone know a good resource for markings, coloration, etc of these ammo types. Measurements are of utmost importance too. Does anyone remmeber if Aberdeen has the bigger ammo inside in their display?

Thanks for any input!

Mike

ww2steel,

For starters, here's the Russian ammunition designation system. Be sure to use the internal link to the projectile definitions as well.

What I think will really help., though, is for you to consult the wonderful color shots on pp. 23, 50-51 of the Beekman House TANKS & WEAPONS OF WORLD WAR II. Covers 20 mm through 128mm.

Hogg's THE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMMUNITION

has many helpful photos and drawings.

Have you investigated Dragon and Verlinden for aftermarket scale ammo with accurate markings?

This confirms the utility of the latter and provides valuable paint color info.

In closing, I highly recommend you hunt down the various Explosive Ordnance volumes produced by the U.S., U.K. , etc. in the period of interest. Some of these have been reprinted or may even be on CD-ROM. This one's available via PDF or hard copy.
