Flame Thrower vs AFV

Recommended Posts

Oh yes, plenty of success. I have put together a scenario which will let you try it out in ideal conditions for flamethrower units. It's playable vs the AI. If you're interested in a copy, drop me a line.

Edited to correct sucky spelling caused by shortage of sleep and excess of caffeine.

Played a QB against the AI last week set to heavy woods. Gave myself infantry and the AI Armour. By some fluke, the woods left only a keyhole 2 tiles wide from the armour to get through. The bottleneck was 100m beyond my setup zone so I moved 2 TH teams with RPG grenades and a flamethrower to the edges of the neck, thinking I might get a couple of tanks before his infantry got me. An antire platoon (5) of Mk IVs and two heavy ACs obligingly blundered through the gap unescorted and were wiped out to the last. The flamthrower got one AC and two tanks. This cut the AI's morale down so badly that his infantry meandered around in the woods without contacting the rest of my defence, so the rest of my forces never got a whiff.

I once played a homemade scenario (if that's what "QB" means??) where I ended up with a Wehrmacht flamethrower team hidden in a foxhole, at the edge of some tall pines with a 30-meter arc laid down on a narrow corridor between the pines and a roadblock. There were no other friendly units in the vicinity or even with a LOS to the spot - it was more of a last-ditch defense than anything. I was tending to another part of the battlefield at one point during the game, and returned to the FT team, finding to my surprise that the team was unhidden, with a SU-122 blazing merrily in the corridor, flank exposed to the FT team. So yes, FT's can work if you can site them to make efficient use of their limited range.
