Falcon988
Here's an interesting thought. After all the fighting is over and the two armies go home exactly who & how does the cleaning up? I'm wondering about Stalingrad in particular. I'm pretty sure they didn't just leave a million bodies and thousands of destroyed vehicles on the streets. What is done with them? How long does the clean up job take?
Sergei
It was winter, so the bodies were frozen and didn't need immediate attention. Also being frozen they were easier to pile (unless frozen in strange positions). Digging graves into frozen ground was hard as well, though. Maybe the bodies were burned, or then some engineer equipment was acquired to create mass graves. Debris of war would be first cleared from important routes, otherwise as the whole city was in rubble it wouldn't have been very important to pull all wrecks into wreckyards, just the ones that had useful parts. Dangerous objects would be removed as well, usually as children blew up themselves trying to use them in their games.

Holman
It's usually the civilians who clean up (and live with) the mess of war.
