Gun Barrel size

A little question

My opponents Soviet IS-2 marked with main weapon 122mm L/48. My opposing Tigers have 88mm L/71. I understand the caliber is a 122mm shell vs 88mm, but what does the L/48 vs L/71 imply?

The barrel length is the diameter (122) times the calibre (48).

So the 122L48 is 122mm * 48 = about 6m long

You King Tigers have 88L71 which is a tad bit longer than the Tiger I's 88L56

Usually the higher the calibre the faster the round - compare 75L24 to 75L48 or 75L70 or the 2 88s.

IIRC the first number is the size of the shell the second number is the length of the barrel.

A 75.L17 is 75 mm calibre bore x 17, so,,, 1275 mm

or 1.275 meters long barrel,

75.L35 is 75x35, so 2625mm or 2.625 meter barrel

generaly the longer the barrel, the greater the accuracy and muzzel velocity
