Der Kuenstler
Situation - an AFV appears to the side of your tank - your turret has turned to fire. Is it best to: a) stay still and shoot though your tank's side is exposed, or Pivot to face the vehicle head on while firing, risking reduced accuracy?
JasonC
If the front armor stops its round, then fire one round and back up, turning as you do so. Not in place )in real life you can, if you have tracks with individual reverse etc. In CM, stationary rotation it too slow). When the gunner has reloaded, short halt and fire again, even if only half finished with the movement. If he can penetrate with a hit regardless, just fire and get him first.
Der Kuenstler
Thanks JasonC - I assume if you show as "hull down" you could also stay sideways, since only the turret would show...
JasonC
No, the upper hull can also be hit when hull down. But it is only 1/4 to 1/3 of the target size, the rest will be turret hits. Might not be worth moving in that case, depends on how fast you think you can kill the threat (e.g. is he close etc).
Sportsguy64
"B" is my choice. As gained through experience watching other vehicles and tanks in similar situations.
Other Means
What's the AFV? If a Tiger, Panther or JS2, back up in a open "L" shape so you're moving before the turn. If anything else with reasonable ROF but relatively bad armor, stay and shoot.
DavidFields
I like JasonC's answer. Indeed, he has just given me a new tactic: reverse movement as rotation. (Wasn't rotation faster in CMBO?). Of course, both rotating, and movement-as-rotation, assumes your command delay is not too large. Otherwise...there is no choice. Now a RL or game mechanic additional question(s): Does rotation affect fire accuracy (of the firing/rotating AFV) while it is occuring? Does gyro-stabilization help with maintaining accuracy while rotating?
