KyleG
Just a question for anyone who knows. Are the tungsten rounds used during this era tungsten cored or did they have a tungsten jacket? Where can I reference this info? Cheers.
demoss
No reference handy, but I'm pretty sure they were tungsten cored. I doubt a tungsten jacket would accomplish anything.
flamingknives
Tungsten cored, definately. Smaller contact area with same energy = more penetration. For the most part, the core was supported by a lightweight jacket out to the full calibre of the gun which did not fall away from the shell like modern Sabot rounds.
Redwolf
There were also SABOT shots in WW2, most noticably the 17-pounder tungsteen round is one. Accuracy and robustness of projectile were not up to Ap standards, though.
