The_Enigma
Am reading Panzer Operations currently and the author is describing some counterattack several panzer and panzergrenadeir divisions have just launched. He notes that the Soviet minefields where spotted by the luftwaffe so the 2 Corps of 5 divisions were able to skirt around them. How exactly can a minefield be spotted by planes?
Vergeltungswaffe
Hasty minefields often have lots of telltale digging marks in the ground that can be easily visible from the air, if the weather and terrain cooperate.
Sergei
I presume he means air reconnaissance, ie. photographs taken from above of interesting stuff (in this case, engineers digging around) and analyzed by intelligence specialists, who'd know what to look for. If the minefield was large enough that a whole Corps had to alter course then it is possible that the engineers (if they were even trained for that) had too much work at hand to spend much time hiding the mines.
