Monwar
Is the Russian 12.7 mm DShK heavy machinegun like the .50 calibre USA one? In which situation is it most helpful (I mean in which case it would be extra advantageous to use them over the cheaper Maxims)? Should it be used at all?
flamingknives
In real life, the DShK is very like the .50cal (.50" = 12.7mm) However, the M2 (US .50cal) was designed as a belt-fed ATR, whereas the DShk was intended as a heavy calibre (and hence long-range) AP MG I think in CMBB, the DShK has better firepower at long range than the maxim, but a more limited ammo load precludes long range use vs. infantry. It's probably at it's best as a swing role weapon, as it is capable of damaging Axis thin AFVs, like HTs, AA vehicles and soft-skins, while it can also dish out AP fire. In this sense, you could see it as replacing an ATR and a Maxim. I rarely bother, however, as the ATR has better performance at range and is harder to spot.

It tears the crap out of HTs, soft vehicles and some light german tanks. Ammo load lowish.

Sound sense Sir. But I should still prefer Cheddar over Wensleydale. Though truth be told my heart is set is on the softer French cheeses. Does this mean that you still owe me a turn?
Kirill S.
The DShK should perform better than the US .50 Cal. DShK ammo is 12.7x108mm, while the .50BMG is 12.7x99mm. Think of it as an automatic anti-tank rifle. [ September 28, 2003, 10:30 PM: Message edited by: Kirill S. ]

DShK ammo may be larger, but the gun itself tends to spread the bullets out a bit more for suppressive effect, while the M2 is far more accurate. In addition, ISTR that the DShk is Gas-operated while the M2 is recoil operated, and possibly the M2 has a longer barrel, giving better MV that cartridge size might suggest.
