Question Regarding Strategic Bombing

I just tried a bombing campaign against the Germans, after France fell. Instead of putting MPPs into ground units, I disbanded most of them, and used the points for research. Just one level in heavy bombers made a big difference. Damage to the targets increased, and the bombers themselves (escorted) seemed to take fewer hits. It also consistantly damaged the fighers he put there, and further reduced his resource pool.

I'm fairly sure that a second bomber group (which I could never quite afford), would start to put a big dent in the German resources. Having a second level of heavy bombers research would probably make losses on the coast become significant.

I can predict Britain/US bombing will have a HUGE effect in 42 & 43 once Germany is tied up with Russia. We're complaining about small early runs in 40/41 being useless and I'm pretty sure that really WAS the case. The air war is going to be important over northern europe and Germany will never have quite enough resources to keep it going while fighting Russia.

As far as subs go, turn on the FOW !! I park 3 11 strenght subs off America with one rotating in for repairs and sink 17-25 ( not counting +5 in med) MMPs and god save the fleet that runs into a german (11) U-boat and gets surprised. Save those french fleets, you're gonna need em smile.gif

as a person all about strategic bombing in any game that has it, i would say that its effectiveness as current is fine. the problem is the cost. Massing 3-4 bombers plus 3-4 fighters is 2700 without the cost for repairs. At that point, you have an effective airforce that is a significant threat to MPP production and requires significant use of enemy production to both repair his fighter defense and build enough fighters to actually keep up with you.

I would prefer to see the price dropped to 400 for strategic bombers. Even that small change would make them much more palatable in a 2 player game.

as far as subs go, there are already several possible fixes, slighly lower cost, ability to move thru enemy units, or my personal favorite a sub "box" that subs are moved into for strategic effect. and the allies have to move ships into the box if they want to try and stop the strategic effect of subs. that removes them from head on combat, which isn't very realistic in the first place.

Hey all.

Just played a game as the allies. I tried to go for all out strategic bomber war.

I got 3 strategic bombers by the time the demo was over and had heavy bomber level 1 - used all UK MPPs as well disbanded some army units.

Last bombing missions did 16MPPs of Damage to Antwerp and some other place. 4 MMPs followed by 4 MPPS and finnaly 8 MPPS. (The two first raids got intercepted by luftwaffe.) UK losses for the strat.bomber 2-1-1 pts for each air fleet (4 pts all).

Had the Free Frence Air as well as the RAF fly escort. RAF as well as FFA they had some losses as well but I assume that these losses are close to german defensive fighter losses anyway.

My over all guess is that with the Germans engaged on the east front their air power in w-europe will be smaller/destroyed/moved makeing bombing runs well worth the effort. In any case it may take some pressure of the USSR.
