BlueMax 1939
sogard...emailed the wiesenthal society a couple of weeks ago and i finally got a response... Subj: Re: michael wittmann Date: 10/7/02 12:26:33 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: abreitbart@wiesenthal.net (Aaron Breitbart) To: Alphaimpulse@cs.com Thjank you for your inquiry.I could find no evidence of wittman's participation in war crimes, either. There are some excellent articles on his career on the internet. If interested,go to www.google.com and simply insert his name in the searchbox. >>> <Alphaimpulse@cs.com> 09/27/02 10:39AM >>> I am doing some research on Haupstürmfuhrer Michael Wittmann of the Liebstandarte Adolph Hitler, 1st SS Panzer Division. To this point in my studies I have found no evidence that Wittmann was a part of any massacre or other war crimes, due to the fact that most of the information I have deals primarily with his military history as a Panzer commander. However, Mr. Wiesenthal has compiled an extraordinary amount of documents on matters such as these and I would be extremely grateful if you could give me any information as to whether or not this man was a war criminal, or if anyone under his command perpertrated war crimes. Edwin
This does not surprise me. However, don't hold your breath for an apology. What I said still stands - True praise indeed. Coming from one of the finest battlefield commanders of WWII, the youngest Divisional General of the German army - only exceeded, I would say, by Paul Hausser, a commander of real distinction. Finally, Wittman was awarded the Oak leaves with Swords. Only 159 of these were awarded during WWII. Germany, like Britain, was not over generous in issuing awards
Brian Rock
Max, although this topic has come up on this board, the discussion would be more suited for the General Forum. If you do, could you post a notice here to flag it down? I'll restrain myself from commenting for now...
Ancient One
Sogard, if he replies at all, is going to say that since Michael Wittmann was a member of an evil organization, he is guilty by association regardless of what he as a person actually did.
