  1. I did not got as far a seeing Russian Armour. My game crashed as Romania joined the axis (draw_sprite_on_map_surface - direct sound failed: dserr: invalid param). Russia had just joined the allies. Details sent separately to Hubert
  2. I agree. Forget Finland. I just support if necessary, to maintain MPP. Get in behind the first line of Russian defence to prevent/limit reinforcements and destroy at leisure - good tactic, I think, but I do not manage it too often. Often I have not built up enough armour or army/army corps.
  3. A right mouse click - you learn something every day, thanks. I/O ERROR - take something for that nasty cough. I knew the carriers were launched in 1939, but I was not sure of the commission dates. Quite a lag.
  4. I always play the full campaign. I have never been interested in limited campaigns with any game. I am just a sucker for a long game
  5. HMS Victorious was one of the Illustrious class of carriers. Three of them (including the Victorious - not sure if the launch was before or after September 3rd) being launched in 1939. However, I have noticed that SC does not give the accurate starting forces for the main belligerents. Whilst the game is based on an historical event it does not aim to replicate that event in total. SC is not trying to be a history lesson. We must make do with what we have. Perhaps we should have the ability to name newly created units
  6. The early axis subs will be wiped out by an experienced player who hunts them down. However, if you invest 5 points in sub research as soon as possible, and fortune smiles on you, you could be purcasing level 3 subs in early 41. Save enough MPP to buy 3 at once and they are not easy to defeat. I have used this on a couple of PBEM games and managed to shut the US down at their point of entry - all allied surface ships having been sunk. I have also introduced them piecemeal. At other times this has failed.
  7. EB- You seriously trivialise the importance of Lend/Lease and the effect of US troops from 1942 onwards. If the USA never entered the war or supplied Lend/Lease Britain would never have been able to hold on to North Africa or mount a European invasion. In addition, if Axis forces were not tied down in North Africa/Italy they could have been used on the eastern front. That said, no one in their right mind can disagree that Russia won the war for the allies by tying down over 160 Axis divisions. Hitler should have studied Napoleon. Reality is that the Russian army of 1942 fielded 4.5 million military personnel on the western border, in 1944 they had 5 million men in infantry armies alone. Divisional figures - USA, infantry basic unit 15500 men. Russian equivalent 9500. US infantry divisions were never formed with Tanks - that said, once in combat tanks were frequently assigned - but not hundreds of tanks. US armoured division had just under 230 tanks. German panzer division had between 150 and 200 tanks. Finally, I do not think Russia has too much MPP. However, I do think that the USA should be able to contibute more. Personaly I would like to see some representation of Lend/Lease
  8. A good point ZERES. Also realistic, as it did happen during WWII. I seem to recall that the old board game Third Reich allowed something like this - I could be wrong
  9. Uncanny, I was going to post the same reply yesterday but decided against it. It is always worth stating the facts.
  10. This does not surprise me. However, don't hold your breath for an apology. What I said still stands - True praise indeed. Coming from one of the finest battlefield commanders of WWII, the youngest Divisional General of the German army - only exceeded, I would say, by Paul Hausser, a commander of real distinction. Finally, Wittman was awarded the Oak leaves with Swords. Only 159 of these were awarded during WWII. Germany, like Britain, was not over generous in issuing awards
  11. Well Sogard we agree on one thing; that Rommel was one of the best. As usual you keep making these generalised statements about atrocities. I fully support the execution of anyone found guilty of war crimes. However, you have not provided any reference to the war crimes of the discussed persons. I am not personally aware of any but I am aware of their prowess on the battlefield hey, lets talk about those butchering, murderous, raping and stealing allied soldiers - why were they not tried and executed at Nuremburg! Surely your not ignorant enough to think it did not happen, IT DID. However, we won the war so why punish our people. Following your logic that all SS are murdering dogs because some were, then all allied soldiers are the same - explain your logic. I realise that allied atrocities were on a minute scale compared to German atrocities but we are only talking about some front line soldiers - not the ones who spent their time clearing the ghettos War is not clean and tidy it is hell and in the heat of battle many actions that would be seen as crimes when examined at a later date, happen. Vietnam is probably the best example of that - and those guys coming home were treated like crap, I bet you were or would have been one of those air heads jeering them off the planes. Finally, when the bombs start dropping, the enemy attacks, you are hugely outnumbered and stuck in hand to hand fighting, you are totally alone - to hold fast, survive and do it all again tomorrow is TRUE GRIT - This is taken from a guy I knew who took a little walk in the bright italian sun (he thought Cassino was his worst battle - don't read books, speak to those who were there.
  12. True praise indeed. Coming from one of the finest battlefield commanders of WWII, the youngest Divisional General of the German army - only exceeded, I would say, by Paul Hausser, a commander of real distinction. It makes no difference what country the soldier is from. Soldiering as a profession is about eliminating the opposition and the more skilled you become the greater the respect. Of the many British soldiers I have known only those who spent considereable time in a Japanese prisoner of war camp would adopt the attitude of the second writer. I did not want to get into this, we should just be enjoying the game. However, the rubbishing of heroic men by people who apparently have no idea what grit it takes to hold a line deserves comment.
  13. This happened once with 1.03 and has just occurred with 1.04. The error message is only on screen for about one second. However, it states SC execution failed and, I think, segmentation violation. these have occurred during one PBEM game. Has anyone experienced this. Both instance occurred during the playback phase. Any ideas/suggestions welcomed.
  14. Imagine if the German air force could only attack once in two weeks. Its the same for both sides. Jollyguy - The turkey shoot was the Marianas (Saipan, Tinian and Guam)
