"Escort" and "Move in Formation" commands

Recommended Posts

BTS needs to add these commands to the command interface.

Escort is needed for those times when you want to lead other units with another unit (e.g. tank leading halftracks) but you want the escorting unit to break off and engage any enemy units encountered while the main body continues to move. Once the main body clears the danger area, or the enemy unit is destroyed, the escorting unit moves back into its position.

Move in Formation would be great for those times when you want infantry to lead your tanks by some distance in order to flush out AT teams before they can attack. The tanks are there to suppress other units that would attack the infantry (this was used extensively in the bocage country). The way it is now, the tanks reach their waypoints way ahead of the infantry and die or you constantly have to reset waypoints.

They need to eh? I see.

Save your breath 'cause there won't be any more changes to CM1.

We're on the road to Moscow now.

CM simulates the tactical level, which means that most of the things you are looking for need to be done by the player. Your Escort command executes an operational maneuver, leaving all tactical decisions to tank or HT commanders. Even if the TacAI was able to deal with such complexity, hordes of people would probably criticise it and would like to tactically manage the escort maneuver.

Again, this is Panzer General thinking IMO. In CM, you need to do that yourself. The 1min turn is a good trade-off between giving the TacAI small (e.g. solvable) tactical problems and giving you enough time to react to enemy actions. If your tanks reach the waypoints ahead of the infantry, well, dispatch your infantry 2mins before with a recon mission, and use tanks in a support role, until the terrain is clear for them to proceed.

your solution doesn't offer the ability to trail armor 50m behind an advancing screen of infantry or, conversly, for advancing infantry to use the tank as cover from small arms fire by walking right behind it.

Sure it does. Either deploy your infantry 50m ahead of your armor and give them movement orders at the same time, or if that's not possible then give the infantry movement orders for the first turn then follow up with armor. It's done all the time.

As for using tanks as cover, tanks in CM do not provide cover to any unit behind it.

It is easy to maintian tanks trailing 50m behind the squishies. Simply line up the squishies 50m ahead of the tanks and give everyone move commands. I use it all of the time.

LOL, Kingfish.

Annalist: Move (M key) for AFVs is the same speed as Move for Infantry. It is slower than Hunt (which is similar to Run/Move Fast for infantry).

Hey, KITTY, thanks for the total non sequiter. Actually, I like the game a lot. I just found a few things annoying that I thought I'd post on the boards.

First, it's non sequitur, not non-sequiter, and it isn't one anyway. My post was in the form of a question, therefore I wasn't stating anything. I was asking. How is asking if they like they like the game, when the person in question has done nothing but point out what he feels are flaws in it at a record pace presumptive? The vast majority of the "problems" you've been bringing up have already been discussed and explained more than once already.

I only asked my original question after I saw someone post elsewhere that they were wondering the same things about your posts that I was. So now I know. Thank you for explaining.
