I am need of finding unit history for a friend. Could anyone tell where to begin looking?

His name was Private Vincent J. Clark

Born August 14 1913

Died October 9 1944 near Aachen Germany

Member of 39th infantry, 9th infantry division.

If anyone could help me out, I know it is this forum.

How close do you live to Washington DC?

Don't you guys have a Veterans Affairs department. They keep all of the service records of Veterans here in Canada. I also know that England has a similar dept. I had an NCO write them to get replacement medals which were awarded to his father and they sent them along with his dads pay records and release papers.

And it had a fire in the 70's that destroyed nearly all (90%) records of veterans prior to 1950 or something like that. The US Government LOVES its veterans.
