Guest Pillar
What do soldiers do today, and back in World War Two, to keep the bugs off them? I can see them being extremely bothersome to snipers who have to keep still for long periods of time!
Berlichtingen
As I recall, the US military has a fine bug repelant... actually, it kills the little bastards
RMC
Must be top secret. I never had anything that did that. We all had to buy Off! to keep sane.
Guest Pillar
Well, as a sniper I wouldn't want to be walking around smelling like a can of OFF!. Is the US Army stuff scentless?
Sgt.Morgue
During the 60s the U.S.army suppied us with a good bug juice that kept most jungle bugs off, but when one got covered with ants , it was time for direct application of DDT furnished in o.d.green aresol cans , boy those were the good ol'days. Guest Germanboy
Germans had de-lousing stations IIRC. I have two pictures of signs threatening soldiers with being excluded from this service if they damage streets/paths on my website: www.geocities.com/a_biermann/opi/granddad.htm There are a lot of discussions on that in accounts from WW I. ------------------ Andreas
mensch
we used muskoil in the army.. worked real well... smelled natural and did a good job... as for falling asleep in ambush and waking up realizing you set up your ambush in Poison Ivy patch.. now that was fun... heh. IntelWeenie
What I wouldn't have done for something to kill all the flies in Saudi Arabia/Iraq.... My grandfather was a glider trooper in the 82nd and told me all about the flies in the desert. Didn't really understand how bad they were 'till it was MY turn. He told me they had pretty much NO bug repellant, but every so often their encampments would get DDT'ed. In '91, we tried a few different sprays/lotions and found a combination of "Skin-so-soft" (tac intel units have women in them - good and bad )and fly strips worked the best for us. Of course, this probably wouldn't be ideal for the basic "leg" infantryman. ------------------ "Belly to belly and everything's better" - Russian proverb
