Egad, those video card conundrums!

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

The big vid card conundrum continues.

i was looking at a GeForce 2 or Voodoo 5500 but I think that might be just a little over the top for my c400 128mb ram.

So, how does CM run on a tnt 2? Especially those ones with snazzy 3d goggles mmmm

And how do all sorts of other games run with the TNT 2, like FPS, games like Ultima 9, um and so on!

help my brain hurts!

Same rig than yours except for a pII 400. I have just purchase a TNT2 based card (alas PCI as i do not have an AGP port) and CM is running nice and smooth smile.gif

Try checking out www.sharkyextreme.com fort info on hardware and the pro's and con's.

From what I hear, the GE Force is the way to go. Newest Voodoo with double processors means that textures get loaded twice (independent memory spaces, IIRC), so the gobs of ram on the card actually isn't.

I run a nVidia TNT, and don't have any issues other than my Celeron 366, which is next on my hit list to upgrade.

Thanks for the ideas.

I just have to work out if i have an AGP slot or not.

What i don't get is if a TNT 2 natively supports 3dfx type stuff in a pretty fashion. Of course, it will need to do d3d and all that, but i want good support for all platforms smile.gif

Guest ACTOR

Well I bought the GeForce2 card and then found out that my machine is really not capable of handling the full scope of the cards capabilities. frown.gif I have a PII 450, 128 meg ram. It runs much better than it did with my Voodoo2 card, but I decided to buy a new computer so I could enjoy CM even more.

Athlon 1Ghz...I can't wait to get it. smile.gif

Upgrading your vid card won't speed up your game play too much, but it will allow you more eye candy. I cannot see anything in CM that would benefit from a Ge Force or Geforce 2 (i.e., hardware T&L). If you were to get a V5 5500, you could turn on 4X FSAA and enjoy awesome flicker free, jaggy free graphics. But that's me, both cards are plenty fast enough but it's your cpu holding back frames per second.

So, given the option of TNT2 or V3, I'd get the V3 as it's a better card. Here's how I'd rank the 2 companies products.

1a. V5 5500

1b. Geforce 2

2. Geforce (DDR - double data rate)

3. V3

4. Geforce (SDR - single data rate)

5. TNT2 Ultra

Just my two cents on the video card issue:

If you have a 400 MHz P2/Celeron system and are planning to upgrade your video card (without breaking the bank), I would recommend a GeForce over a TNT2, assuming that you have an AGP slot.

How do you tell if you have an AGP slot? Open up your computer case and look for a short brown slot next to the white PCI slots. That brown slot is the AGP slot. If it's there, then you're set.

I'm very pleased with my GeForce (a Guillemot Prophet DDR-DVI), and you can rest assured that when you upgrade your system, the performance from the card will increase as well.

For more information on card pricing, I recommend http://www.PriceWatch.com

Humm you mean by c400 a cyrix 400? *shiver*

Well cyrix has very poor FPU, so perhaps a good inexpensive option is a voodoo3 3000, they run very well on slower systems. The TNT cards are actually the superior card but they are much more dependant on the speed of your CPU and FPU. I sympathize greatly tho I am using a Matrox g400 and cant decide whether to upgrade and if so what to get etc etc. And since we are on the subject anyone running the game on a very high end system and very high end card want to comment on just how high a resolution they can acheive? Anyone running smoothly at 1600*1200?

Oh hum I guess you meant a Celeron 400 wink.gif

Anyways TNT2 wont run glide unless you buy a Creative Labs card as they have glide emulation. Really depends on how much you want to spend...GeForce256 DDR's are a good mid-range choice too now as I see them for $180 as opposed to the GeForce GTS which is a good hundred dollars more

I tried both the GeForce2 and the Voodoo5 5500. I actually preferred the GeForce2. The GeForce2 had much crisper, richer colors - especially in CM. The Voodoo5 5500 under 2x or 4x FSAA had colors that appeared dull or washed out. Not to mention that when I ran the Voodoo5 5500 with the latest drivers, there were graphical problems with the game. There would be patches of missing graphics where my mouse cursor was (this problem has been reported many times in the support forum). I followed all suggestions and couldnt get this annoying problem resolved. The GeForce2 had absolutely NO problems whatsoever. Neither card ran 4xFSAA extremely well without a huge framerate loss, but I preferred the GeForce2 over the Voodoo5 5500 for sure.
