Scenario design - or "Why won't these guys MOVE!"

CM has to be the greatest WWII wargame I have EVER played!!!

That having been said, I have created a scenario in which the Americans must cross a river and exit some of their forces off the opposite edge.

I played the scenario as the Americans and am pleased with the look and feel of it. I tried the scenario as the Germans and was not happy with the outcome frown.gif

The Americans send one unit (usually a tank destroyer) across the bridge and once it gets whacked (by an 88mm ATG) the rest of the forces refuse to cross the bridge.

DETAILS:

1. The bridge is 2 squares long and crosses 2 squares of water.

2. There is a road that connects to both sides of the bridge.

3. There is marsh on either side of the road. (one square thick along the river)

4. There is a large hill on the opposite side of the river from the American setup area. The ATG is placed just around the hill and does not have LOS to the bridge itself but to the road leading off the bridge.

5. The scenario is 25 turns long. American setup on the west edge, German setup east of the river. American armor can exit, infantry cannot. There are 3 small flags and one large at key crossroads.

When I play as the Americans I can barely win... I have just enough time to make it safely across the board. It seemed well balanced.

How can I ensure the Americans will cross the bridge (even under fire)? How can I impress upon them the sense of urgency needed to ensure they "get a move on!" so as to be able to exit one or more units and possibly win?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I had a similar problem when working on an Omaha Beach scenario. The Americans would flee down the beach instead of trying to move up to the beach exits. I solved the problem by putting the friendly edge of the map opposite the troops, i.e. the same side as the exit. Your troops may be afraid to cross the bridge, but they will do so if they perceive that they can seek safety on the other side. It improved my scenario immensely.
