GI Tom
I don't know the first place it was used, and I'm not sure for which weapon, but I know it refers to the length of the ammunition belt used for a specific type of machine gun. Yes, basically I know a little about everything but a lot about nothing. The worst kind eh?? GI Tom ------------------ To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of wierd sandwich. 82nd Airborne
quote:
Originally posted by JediJobu: Where did the phrase " the whole nine yards " came from?

I read that it came from fighter pilots in WW2. Not sure the plane model but the gun belts were 9 yrds. Emptying the belt , meant giving "them the whole 9 yrds". regards ------------------ What you see depends mainly upon what you look for. Airborne
Yes, the phrase came from WWII. The standard ammo belts for fighter planes were 27 feet. Hence, "the whole nine yards" when all was fired. ------------------ Land Soft--Kill Quiet
