Troop question

Recommended Posts

I have to confess. I was never really all that much into infantry and armor and all that jazz until I found this game. As a matter of fact, the entire strategy genre (w/ the exception of SP1&2) was a big turn off. CM has changed that. I am now scrambling to learn all that I can.

I was wondering if anyone could possibly enlighten me about about a few things...

* What is the difference between Army (Heer), Fallshirmjaeger, and the uh... Mountain troops insofar as in-game effectiveness and their overall different roles in combat.

* What the hell are the following and what are they best used for:

- Escort troops?

- Security troops?

- Pioneers?

- Grenadiers?

* I was under the impression that a motorized or mechanized group would come with trucks or halftracks respectively. Is this actually the case, because it doesn't seem to be so far.

* What makes the Firefly so damned special? What is so different about it from a regular Sherman that allows it to wreak havoc with my heavy armor?

Can we say newbie or what? wink.gif

Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ok, this is going to be very brief, but will get you started.

Heer is the german army as a whole.

Fallshimjaeger's are German Airborne.

Grenadier means infantry.

Panzer Grenadier is motorized infantry.

Pioneers are engineers.

Security... I think like MP's (not sure though).

Mountain troops, specialized for warfare in mountains and have a sh*t load of firepower at short range.

(if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will point it out real quickly)

Help any at all?

Well the difference in them is mainly the weapons. Gebirgsjaegers are good for close fighting. Fallshirmjaegers rule.

Escort troops use em for anything, as are Security. Almost the same as a rifle team.

Pioneers-use them for close assaults in cities, they have satchel charges and flamethrowers in their platoons

Some of the Panzergrenadiers come with halftracks when you buy them, just check if it says "Armored"

Firefly has a nice big gun on it, 17 pdr I believe

Let's see if I can help you with a little other angle than the previous replies.

* What is the difference between Army (Heer), Fallshirmjaeger, and the uh... Mountain troops insofar as in-game effectiveness.

FJ are generally tougher and better than Heer.

Gebirgsjäger adds better movement in terrain with slopes to that.

* What the hell are the following and what are they best used for:

(Historical use)

- Escort troops?

Escort of supply convoys.

- Security troops?

Protect the rear areas, like regt and dicision HQ.

- Pioneers?

Up the front to clear out enemy minefields and fortifications.

- Grenadiers?

Infantry within armoured divisions.

Typically each Panzerdivision had two regiments of Panzergrenadiers and each regiment had two battalions. One of these four battalions were Gepanzert (armoured), the other three were motorized.

* What makes the Firefly so damned special?

The 17pdr gun. Almost equivalent to the Panther gun...

- Asking questions is always a good start. The only stupid questions are those never asked.

A couple of small clarifications.

Mountain troops generally had lighter (smaller caliber) heavy weapons that broke down into portable loads for pack animals over steep and difficult terrain. Light infantry was often similar except they lacked the special training for mountain combat. The mountain troops had a reputation for toughness and competency. Most of them, especially early in the war, were Austrian.

Security troops were specially organized for anti-partisan work. Their line companies were effective identical to those in a regular infantry division, but they had a much smaller artillery establishment consisting of lighter weapons than in an infantry division. They were *not* MPs (Feldpolizei), which were a separate arm.

One thing to point out about CM is that there are no "inherent" advantages built into different flavors of troops. That is, a "regular" Heer rifle squad and a "regular" Waffen SS rifle squad will fight at the same level and break under the same stress. This means that SS troops and fallschirmjagers aren't supermen in comparison with heer and even volkssturm (unfit German militia) troops.

But that's what the experience rating and leadership variables are for. The scenario designer decides these levels and, while they are subject to abuse, they give CM real flexibility. In general, SS and FJ should have better leaders and higher experience levels, UNLESS the scenario is set towards the end of the war when even SS recruiters were scraping the bottom of the barrel.

If you see a scenario featuring "crack" volkssturms whose leaders all have +2 ratings, you know it's a fantasy. Volkssturms should be conscripts or green, generally. On the other hand, you should never see "conscript" paratroops, because these units were hand-picked and received good training.

On this note, I would love to see someone post a guide to the general experience levels that we should expect to see among various service arms at various periods, and why it is so.
