Actual AARs...where to find them

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for AARs. I thought I read that the Army has a lot of them published somewhere. Searched through the old posts, and didn't find anything (have you any idea how many times "AAR" is used on this board?!?). I'd like to do some historical reading, and was wondering if anyone new any good sites to find this stuff.

Thanks.

You had that TOO handy, Chuppy. Appreciate it.

Anything in there that you recommend?

As a side note...you know the Carlisle Army War College is about 10 miles west of me...funny.

Basically everything in there's good. The actual AARs are a bit outside of CM's scope, but there are a few battalion-sized engagements described, IIRC.

The Combat Lessons guides are fun. Again, there's not a whole lot there that can be applied directly to CM, as those tend towards micromanagement. But the line art in the Combat Lessons is worth the price of admission. And there are some useful items.

The Handbook on German Military Forces (TM-E 30-451) is probably the single most useful thing I've found there. OOBs, comments on German doctrine, you name it. The trouble is, it's freaking huge. The site's split it up into three 200-page chunks. Since the files are all in .pdf format, they can take a good long while to load.

Croda:

All US AARs and other papers are kept at

the Archives II Texual Reference Branch, National Archives, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD. 20740. They are under the Records of the Adjutant General's Office 1917- (Record Group 407).

I have samples of one division posted on line plus other items you can get. Basically what you do is send in a request (ie, you are looking for the AARs of the xxxregiment of the xxdivision, dated Feb - May 1945).

They in turn will send you a list of what is available and the cost for copying.

To view samples of what I have been able to get over the years go to my Home PAge that I maintain: http://www.trailblazersww2.org and lookin the following sections: Division History, Regiments and support units. Look for the column on the right and find "Official Documents"

Hope this helps.
