German Surrender in the West

Recommended Posts

I get a sense that US and UK high level leaders - political and military - were hoping the Wehrmacht would see the light and surrender to the West after Cobra. Have you come across any sources that might confirm or refute that idea? This question comes from reading a bit recently on the pros/cons of Eisenhower's broad front strategy vs Montgomery's narrow front drive and the proposed allocation of fuel. If Ike knew the Germans would fight on would he have been more aggressive by fueling Monty (doubtful) or Patton (more likely).?

Thanks.

It´s doubtful that the western allied had any hopes any time that germany would surrender before thouroughly beaten, with allied forces deep in german interior, with the Ruhr and possibly Berlin taken. July 20, 1944 and after might have seen a possibility for some german western front forces to surrender or open the lines if Hitler had been actually killed, but that´s one of the matters the western allies surely weren´t aware of at that time, or could hope for.

Think if Ike knew the germans would that quickly recover, he´d likely have spent more resources on openening Antwerp after capturing. Market Garden possibly would have yielded more when launched up from Antwerp to Walcheren, who knows. Yet with Antwerp in hands and ready to be used as major supply point, Ike´s broad front strategy was more likely to succeed quicker. Maybe Monty knew and didn´t press the attack beyond Antwerp, so he could follow his more ambitious plans capturing the ruhr by way of Arnhem.
