BLSTK
More Third Reich arcana: The Forty-Two Plots. At least three of them should have worked given the laws of probability. Did the Fuhrer have a guardian angel? And to think my future father-in-law could have changed history. While manning a Flakvierling at "The Wolf's Lair" in Rastenberg, he caught a glimpse of Der Fuhrer about a football-field away. What was the range of those things again?
Wicky
Also the Germans (or vitally Hitler) were led to believe from deceprion plans (notably the double agaents etc). that the Normandy invasion (from UK south coast) was a diversion from the real attack on Calais - this persisted for a month or two - so even if the Germans had attacked staging area they would likely mistakenly rocketed Kent. Add to that that the double cross system was systematically giving false feedback on the accuracy of V1s and V2s to them hitiing relatively less important areas - even ports like Southampton which was a major emabarkation port for D-day from Marshalling Area C for many months after June 1944. V-weapons deception https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-Cross_System#V-weapons_deception When the German 65th Army Corps received a false Double Cross V-1 report that there was considerable damage in Southampton —which had not been a V-1 target—the V-1s were temporarily aimed at the South Coast Ports. V-1s were extremely powerful. As a result, the Double Cross deception also caused retargetting from London, not just inaccurate aiming. However, when V-1s launched from Heinkel He 111s at Southampton on July 7 were inaccurate, British advisor Frederick Lindemann recommended the agents report that the attack caused "heavy losses" in order to save hundreds of Londoners each week at the expense of only a few lives in the ports. When the Cabinet learned on August 15 of the deception, Herbert Morrison said that they had no right to decide that one man should die while another should survive, but the deception was approved to continue.
Childress
And to think my future father-in-law could have changed history. While manning a Flakvierling at "The Wolf's Lair" in Rastenberg, he caught a glimpse of Der Fuhrer about a football-field away. What was the range of those things again? Yes, your father-in-law might have changed history. But his subsequent life span would have been nasty, brutish and short. And no wife for you... Most of the assassination attempts had an ill-organized quixotic aspect. However there were a few that had an excellent chance of success. Notably: 1- The Beer Hall, 1939. Georg Elser conceals an intricately designed time bomb inside the podium. But Hitler shows up an hour early and delivers an unusually short speech. The bomb explodes killing a number of the remaining attendees but Hitler has already left. 2- 1943. General Tresckow smuggles a box of Cointreau concealing a plastic explosive onto Hitler's plane. It inexplicably fails to detonate. He tries again this time the explosive is hidden inside his uniform during a conference. The suicide attempt aborts when the Fuhrer again leaves early. 3- Valkyrie, 1944. Stauffenberg plans to enter the Fuhrer Bunker with two bricks of explosive. As he's loading the bombs in his briefcase he's summoned immediately, leaving the second brick behind.
LukeFF
Goodness Kettler - you are a sucker for punishment - Is your memory so poor that you've forgotten your infamous V2 atomic missile silo debacle after you gullibly believed Henshall last time: http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/c/castel_vendon/index.shtml Ah, I remember that all too well. Long nights on the late shift at the hospital with nothing else to do, so I had to entertain myself with some sort of reading somehow.
