Bahger
I'm very impressed and wanted to say thank you to Battlefront. The tin container for the DVD -- I will probably never need to use the disk but am glad to have it -- is attractive, distinctive, military in appearance without being over-the-top and turns CMBS into a collectible item. The two manuals are of a high quality in printing, materials and binding. They are exactly the right size for both portability and legibility and this kind of spiral-binding is the perfect choice for ease of use. I could, but won't, immediately name three specialised milsims which charge more for lower quality supplemental materials, both manuals and DVDs/custom cases. Although so many of us are digital consumers, what BF has done here is make the game collectible. Well done, guys.
panzersaurkrautwerfer
I wouldn't go as far to call it collectable, but the overall quality is excellent. It feels less like I've bought a very realistic game, and more like I picked up a very user friendly training aid.
Bahger
Well it's a lot more collectible than a DVD that arrives in a paper sleeve! And the manuals are sturdy enough to accompany me on a long flight this week, during which I might learn the mission editor. It's a pity I do not have a laptop.
panzersaurkrautwerfer
I think we're just looking at it from different ends. I really don't think of game stuff as collectible, but on the other hand the manuals and materials are on par with stuff that usually has "UNCLASSIFIED-FOUO" on the cover. I wish the DoD would wise up and start throwing money at Battlefront. I'm in no way making an official statement, but it's one of the better simulators I've used, and it's much better than most of the systems of record for platoon-company level tactics (it's a good Battalion level wargame, but I feel the player is too in the weeds compared to what an actual BC does during action to call it a good Battalion simulator).
dan/california
Oh but, but oh, but if only, if they got co-play done right!!!!! The battalion commander would only see what he would actually know, and have to issue orders through his chain of command. So the platoon leaders and up could run a reasonably realistic exercise in a couple of afternoons without burning a hundred thousand dollars in fuel and ammunition. It is certainly not perfect but it teaches what NOT to do in brutally effective way. I know its a ton of programming time, but all you are really doing is customizing the UI to show each leader what he would actually know, and limit his control to the units under his command. The game doesn't need to create any new information that I can see. It is entirely a process of imposing restraints on who can do what. The battalion commander shouldn't even get a mouse. He just gets the map with appropriate FOW and the ability to talk to his subordinates if and how he is in comms. I can dream can't I.
dan/california
If I may advise and extend my remarks. The difference between co-play and better AI is that the amount of work to get co-play done is a LOT more predictable than AI improvements. It is a large but limited project that can be outlined in detail. To the best of my knowledge the generalized , flexible, AI we would all like to have just doesn't exist anywhere, for any comparable game, period. That means all the time and resources committed to doing it are effectively a very speculative investment that might yield little of no benefit.
A Canadian Cat
I think you are quite correct but I am sure someone will be along to tell you you are wrong I think the AI trigger work is a step in the right direction. Right now it offers a lot to make the AI better. With additional enhancements to that feature the AI script can be made to behave in a much more human like way.
VasFURY
Just got my physical copy to the UK - really impressed with the contents, but really pissed with the customs declaration and the international handling charges that Royal Mail just made me pay for my parcel. Battlefront, can you not send your items labelled as gifts, or at least not have the declaration on the exterior of the package, but rather inside? I just had to pay 20 pounds (about 30 bucks) in order to be able to collect your game, which cost me 80 bucks (about 50 pounds), so I paid 30% of the game in customs and postal office charges. Really not cool.
