tgra
The LOS tutorial is superb. However, I'm worried about the different sounds within CM. How much of an advantage will it be to know different vehicle and weapon noises?
Guest Big Time Software
The "audio" spotting is done by the program (in code form), not your ear (audio form). Think of it this way... one of your units hears something and reports it to you. You personally didn't hear it, one or more of your units did. So you click on the mystery location and you see something like: "Tank?" or "Infantry?" This is the most basic level, and nothing your ear human ear can detect is going to give you more information than this. Next bump up in info you might get something like: "Medium Tank?" or perhaps "Light Armored Vehicle". The info and locations that are made available to you are as good as your units are, not as good as your ear is Hope this clears things up. Doug Beman
BTS: Is it at all possible to accurately ID vehicles from sound alone, or is there a limit to the info that can be derived, by your units, from vehicle sounds (e.g. MedTank)? Guest Big Time Software
Not really. The sound you hear for vehicles is generic, so "Light Armored Vehicle" will get (I think) the same engine sound no matter what the vehicle really is (could be a heavy tank!). Generally if something really distinct, like an MG, is heard your units will make the correct guess and tag the enemy as an MG. Still might not know where it is exactly. However, there are rare cases when a unit can open up on you without revealing its position. In these rare cases (generally if they attack on the last second or two of a turn) the small arms noise you hear might at least give you an idea of the kind of enemy unit firing at you.
