noob
If I was playing an operation covering a 24 hour period, using foot units organised at the company level, what percentage of casualties could a company sustain before it was taken off the front line ?
Rokko
http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/history/battlehonours/northwesteurope/theorne.htm Here you can read what casualties the companies of the HLI suffered during Operation Charnwood. They weren't taken off the frontline though. They suffered 265 casualties and recieved 195 replacements two days later. For German units it was probably worse. Once their divisional replacement batallions were depleted they recieved no further reinforcements and often fought to near extinction because there were no reserves.
Erwin
I always thought that 10%+ casualties was considered high enuff to make em combat ineffective. But, perhaps that's for modern warfare, since it appears some of those WW2 companies suffered 30+%(!).
JonS
I think that, almost regardless of casualties, a unit would generally remain in the line for the duration of an operation, although less and less might be expected of it as casualties mounted. So, for example, the armd regts that got shredded on the afternoon of Op GOODWOOD remained in action until GOODWOOD was closed down and they could be relieved. Same with the infantry battalions on top of Hill 112 during EPSOM. Montgomery, and the other CW commanders, were generally quite careful to not ask too much of any single battalion in any given operation so, disasters like Verrieres Ridge aside, units generally weren't worn into the ground before any given operation - or their part in the operation - was over.
noob
Thanks for the replies, if there is no official figure, i will leave it to the players to determine what to do with depleted units.
