can ammo bearers just chuck their stuff in a ditch?

IME, the difference in fatigue rate between a lightly laden and a heavily laden team is pretty slight until you get into more extreme movements, such as crawling on SLOW for long distances, running FAST through dense terrain etc. If you're doing stuff like this, the difference becomes more noticeable.

But I've never done extensive tests. There have been times when it's seemed to me that small teams with really heavy ammo loads are a little too able to keep up with their more lightly-laden mates.

Then again, given that there's no way to order an ammo team to "lighten up", perhaps this is a deliberate abstraction.

I think this hits the nail on the head. In real life they would be able to share that burden with others or stockpile it on the ground somewhere and haul it up as needed. We have to consider that CMBN scenarios tend to play out much, much faster than they did in real life, so there isn't as much opportunity to send guys back and forth with extra ammo.

In "Those Devils in Baggy Pants" the author recounts an incident where the man carrying the bazooka rockets keeps chucking them in a ditch, but every time he wakes up after a snooze the rockets are right back next to him, having been picked up by one of the other guys.

A great book, especially now there seems to some paras sneaking around in Italy.
