"Recon" troops aka bait

Recommended Posts

A bit of semantics here. Scout, Recon... I guess some of us have been using the terms interchangeably. Apologies to the purists and milpros. However, the game does feature "Recon" units.

The issue however is still the same. While clearly some players feel ok about runnning quickly right from the start, many of us like to first "scout" to locate primary enemy assets, and that is what eats up time especially at the start of a mission - and makes some scenarios' time limits seem overly tight - esp when playing WEGO.

you address an important point: we need to differentiate between scouting or recon by specialised units such as cavalry troops (U.S.) or aufklärungs units (German) and scouting or recon tasks assigned to general infantry units. When we talk about splitting general infantry squads and using a scout team we would talk about the second one.

You're right here too - timing is key. Both units can be required to work under time pressure or with ample time to do their task. Usually you would expect a more straightforward and aggressive approach when time is short - the result is clear for this approach: you'll have higher losses. when time is available you would approach more carefully - set up OPs and observe what happens. Its up to the scenario designer to give you the time or not. I faintly remember the discussion on the first battle in one of the original campaigns where players had some trouble to adapt to this kind of mission with ample time.
