Schrullenhaft
When you create a shortcut are you going (within the Windows Explorer file manager) to the executable (in this case 'CM Shock Force.exe') and right-clicking on it and selecting "Create Shortcut" from the popup menu ? This shortcut should directly launch the application (assuming that there isn't something else preventing CMSF from launching).

Schrullenhaft
Launch the executable directly then. What is the file size of your executable ?
heer witmann
this may sound brain dead retarded but where and how do I do that?
Schrullenhaft
If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, go to the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer. This will open up the Windows Explorer file manager. In the left-hand pane under the 'Computer' click on the small arrow/carat next to your 'C:' drive (which may be named). If you installed to the default directory, then you should find the file here (assuming a 32-bit version of Windows): '\Program Files\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force' Within this directory should be the executable file itself 'CM Shock Force.exe'. Double-clicking this will launch the game. Right-clicking and selecting "Create Shortcut" should create a shortcut here that you could copy to your desktop.

Schrullenhaft
Are you running some sort of anti-virus or other security software ? Perhaps this software 'quarantined' your executable file (which involves moving it somewhere by the security software). You may need to open up your security software and see if the file is in there. If it is quarantined, then you will want to 'restore' the file back to where it belongs.
