  1. CC:GC (Close Combat: Gateway to Caen) was under sale recently, costed only 10$ for a week in the humblebundle. It is over now. (I never mean like 'CMBS should follow' or something like that) I really wish a discount event of CMBS or summer sale or anything like that, but that policy purely depends on BFC's thinking, and I respect their decision.

Some of my friends are really really waiting for sales of CMBS. They are serious RTS fans but they are all college students or graduate students, and 55$ is not a cheap price for us. I really want to play this fantastic game with those dudes, but for now, they are just watching my play. Sad :(

  2. I read and searched for those game types, but couldn't find enough detail. It just says like

"It will going to decide possible maps and attacker/defender purchase points"

"Assault weighs more for VP holding, than kill points"

"Attack/defense and Probe are somewhere between Assault and ME"

But I hope to know more details.

What are the 'Probe' and 'Assault' games? For example, how these game proceed, and what are the difference/similarity from ME game and attack/defense game? What is the victory conditions for Probe and Assault games? Are there many PBEM games with probe/assault mode?

    Thanks

    Best,

  3. I have a question about leadership. Does the leadership of HQ squad affects to all other soldiers? I mean 'leadership' of Battalion HQ, Company HQ, or Platoon HQ.

For example, if the Battalion HQ squad have +2 leadership, is this bonus affects all battalion members? Or only to his HQ squad members? Same question with Company / Platoon HQ.

Also, if the leader / commander KIA during battle in those HQ squad, who took over the command, and how the leadership changes?

    Thanks

  4. I use Shadowplay without issue to record. Shadowplay also does not induce any performance degradation like FRAPs or similar products. The trick is to enable desktop capture in the settings. Manually start recording before you start CMBS. All of my CM videos were captured using Shadowplay with a GTX 780 Ti.

I also use Sony Vegas to render and Adobe Creative Suite for other things like graphics/art.

I forgot to mention that I'm using laptop. Some laptops equipped with dual graphic system (intel internal + external) which makes all those problems with recording softwares. I think shadowplay is not ready for laptop, but I understand that because it is still beta.

  5. If this post is more proper in tech section, then please move my post to there. :)

    1) Record

I had hard time to find a proper software to record DirectX/OpenGL game. All other programs, like OBS or Shadowplay, had problem with this. It was impossible to record properly CMBS. ( In OBS, you can use the window mode to record, but quality decreases)

Finally, I found "loilo game recorder" It is free, it is not a heavy program, and it works nicely with CMBS. For me, degree of FPS decreasing during recording was not severe, just small numbers. This is my current record program.

One drawback is, to record cursor, you need to use window mode. I didn't tried but I guess loilo will make some quality decrease in window mode, like other softwares do. So, I'm not recording the cursor in my video.

    2) Encoding

I'm using lightworks free version. There are some limitations in free version, but only for encoding to upload in youtube, free version works enough. (though the free version's maximum youtube quality is 720p). There are lots of great videos in youtube if you search "lightworks tutorial". Like https://youtu.be/ZUMylx7lCa0?list=PLhaLh8Y1rcya1tgPS_i2zxbaBiHkbaf3m  and  https://youtu.be/7znIHsyqfm0.

I shared this information, because I want to watch more CMBS videos. With these programs, recording and encoding are not a terribly difficult task. (though it costs some time).

AAR with pics and explanations is also excellent way of sharing CMBS experience, but I think good one video would be better way. Cool, fancy CMBS walkthrough/battle video with epic music (like Hans Zimmer music or russian army choir musics XD) will be awesome, and that could be the great way to share/advertise this game, and bring more new CMBS players.

  6. More than 10 hours battle for Maryinka finished. Shortly about situation around:

    1. Clashes in Maryinka area escalated in last two month. Terrain on this direction didn't allow to build solid line of defense. So, enemy made probes because thought that our lines is more weak in this area.

    2. 31st of May enemy deversion group penetrated behind our checkpoints in this area and ambushed "Ural" truck with six soldiers of 28th brigade. Two were killed, two wounded, two missed with truck - possibly were captured.

    3. Yesterday representative of Russia left negotiations in Minsk and hampered work of contact group. By words of our diplomats representatives of Russia and separatists demanded full revision of Minsk agreements, but Ukrainian side sharply refused all these demands. So, obviously, this demarche became signal that next step of Kremlin will lay in military plain.

    4. Russian backed fighters in force of about two battalion tactical group with heavy MLRS and SP-guns support attacked our positions on line Krasnohorivka-Maryinka. Possibly enemy objectives were to seize both settlements, establish good conditions for next attack on Kurakhovo with their energy plant and take part of highway Zaporizhia-Donetsk. Also with success of operation to force Ukraine for revision of Minsk agreements and inflict panic and dissatisfaction inside of Ukraine society ("stupid generals", "Poroshenko give up Donbas", "All on Maidan 3.0 !")

    5. Artillery and MLRS strike and continuously mortar fire caused many wounded among UKR forces, also Krasnohorivka was badly damaged - a part of clinic, garages, and several dozen houses were hit and burned. Enemy fighters conducted intensive shelling checkpoints in Maryinka with tanks, BMP and small arms, but main pressure they provided in Krasnohorivka area, seeking to outflank Maryinka garrison. Them succeed on several directions to pierce among our positions, but their massive advance was stopped here. Commander of 28th brigade call own SP-gun support - possibly they destroyed enemy base on territory of horse club "Equestrian"

    6. Meantime, from Maryinka side intensive enemy fire forced Ukrainians stepped back from several forward checkpoints, enemy troops entered in Maryinka and Russian/DNR media hurry up claim about next "great victory".

    7. Ukraine General staff assume a decision to use heavy artillery, which was drown off due to Minsk agreements. Approx in 14:00 artillery and MLRS arrived and deployed, but no order on opening fire. ATO press-service claimed they don't sure that this attack is a real offensive.

    8. Clashes intensified, pressure on our troops became more strong. In 15:00 General Staff commenced fire. Artillery hit various targets between Maryinka and Donetsk. Also several strikes on industrial zones of the city.

9 Enemy troops catch heavy fire and stop advance. In pro-Russian publics of social network spread info how one their T-72BA was hit by Ukrainains and two other, which followed it just surrendered. Battle turned in position withstand with artillery and MLRS exchanges. Russian artillery hit own troops.

    10. After short lull and regroup enemy tried attack again, but their attempt choked quickly.

    11. OSCE and Cease fire contact group started negotiation about cease fire. (First day of) Battle is over.

    Order of battle:

Ukraine: main forces - battalion tactical group of 28th mech. brigade, units of 57th motorized infantry brigade (34th and 43nd sep. motorized inf. battalions), units of 30th mech. brigade (possibly battalion), units of special police battalion "Kyiv-1", some National Guard unit.

DNR/Russia: "international brigade Piatnashka", units of brigade "Vostok", diversion-assault group "Riazan' "

    Losses:

    Ukraine on 19:45 - 3 KIA, 32 WIA (also unconfirmed info about 5 KIA), 1 GAZ-66, two UAZ-452

Separatists/Russia: ATO press-service claimed minimum 36 KIA, 2 tanks, BMP, several trucks, several batteries suppressed, insiders in Donetsk said only one hospital admit about 100 wounded.

Thanks for the report. Can I have a source?

  7. TRPs are entirely justified for defenders. An early task in setting up a defensive plan is registering fires on expected key locations. Less vital in the modern era, when precision first round hits are to be expected, with modern tech, though.

That makes sense. Defenders usually have more time for preparation, so set up TRPs and mines could be justified.

  8. I think it varies between play-partners. For example, XxGunDocxX and I play with no deploy/spawn bombardment, but both of us use preplanned arty air and expect the other to use it. It's allowed for some interesting smoke screening early on.

Ok, so, it is purely depend on gamers. Thanks

I think "no preplanned" and "no TRPs" tends to be applied only to MEs. And the former possibly to the defender in attack/defend type engagements. "No spawn bombardment" is a bit blanket for an attack/defend, since much of the map, including key terrain tends to be within the defender's deployment area (which is commensurately large, and so mitigates the problem of a lucky call wiping out significant assets early). Talk to your opponent and determine what you each want out of the game: I'd say there's an argument for the defender to be allowed T1 setup area barrages when the engagement is an Assault: the odds are so in favour of the attacker, it's almost like some losses to jumping-off-point shelling are expected.

I agree, I think both "no preplanned" and "no deployzone bombardment" should be there for ME game. For attack/defense game, I think attacker maybe allowed to do both or only one of them, but not for defender.

  9. Brutal. That round went through and through and trough. Double penetrations are already rare, but triple penetrations are something you only experience once in a lifetime.

It is really rare. I reload the save file, but the same happening never occurred again!! Maybe I spend too much luck for my CMBS life? XD

To be fair, the Humvee almost doesn't count vs APFSDS at that range, and the building isn't much protection either. Cool happening though!

I agree, but yes, this was really cool! The T-90AM just aimed at HMMWV, and didn't even knew the what was behind the building(not even yellow icon). I think the crews of that T-90AM would be very surprised also.

  10. Hello all

    1) What are the advantages of fixed-wing CAS when compare to helicopter supports? (Or, in what situation the airplane CAS is better than chopper CAS?)

I mean, airplanes in the CMBS have less amount of ATGMs, and cannot call the CAS to anywhere unless there is a direct LOS from Air controller sections (unlike choppers can be called anywhere without direct LOS). Airplanes have HE bombs, however, but their effectiveness are not 100% guaranteed - it can be missed. In addition, though someone claimed that the airplanes are more likely to evade the surf-to-air threats than choppers do, to me, they are also vulnerable against the SAMs or AAAs as same as rot-wings. Stinger AA or Igla, Tungu... are very dangerous even for airplanes.

Airplane's cost is also not that cheaper than helicopters. In US, F-16CJ AT costs very close in QB points with Apaches, while the F-16CJ AT have only 4 ATGM (Apache Guardian AT has 16 ATGMs). In Rus, Su-34 and Su-24M2's cost level is similar with KA-52 or Havoc's ones. What is the real good point of F-16 CJ AT, Su-34 and Su-24M2 over Apache, KA52 or Havoc? Also, when should I need to choose F-15 or F-16 instead of Apache, or Su-25s over KA-52 or Havoc? I couldn't find any good reason why should I need to use the airplane CAS, instead of high tier gunships.

    2) What is the differences between helicopter?

In Rus, KA-52 is a bit expensive than Mi-28N Havoc, though the Mi-28N have more number of ATGMs, and 122mm HE rockets (IMO much more useful than 80mm rockets) What justifies this 'little expensive cost' of KA-52 when compare to Havoc? Survivability? or ability to find / detect the enemy vehicles? Same with Apaches. Guardians are slightly expensive than Longbows. Is this just because of more number of hellfire ATGMs in Guardian? Or because of other in-game issues?

    Thanks

    Best,

  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-tEen7xKUk

2 min vid with English subtitles.

Very, very lucky shot from T-90AM. Svinets penetrated Humvee, a building, and the side of M1A2 SEP v2 behind the wall. (Does the in-game T-90AM use Svinets-2? or Svinets-1?)  Anything can happen on the battlefield, specially when it is inside the forest of buildings.

  12. My Quote is not working :/ anyway

"Because both you and the guy in the article were "just repeating what you thought the guy was saying" and "it's not like it's your own mf thought in the matter". "2300 Armata tanks" is a legendary statement by now, and it's wrong from the beginning, because it's a giant misunderstanding. The actual plan for ГПВ-2020 was to get 2300 new armored vehicles. That includes BTR-82A, upgraded T-72B3s, and even upgraded BTR-80->BTR-82AM."

Ok, now I know that the 2300 new vehicle mention was wrong, but still, that single statement cannot harm the credibility of the author's point on Russian economy.

"From what I've seen so far, people who scream "OMG Russian economy is crumbling!", just want to "see the bad guys fail" (a widespread psychological desire), and don't really want to look at the actual facts and numbers, which is imperative for doing an actual economical analysis."

Because their "so called scream" is so true and they are real, and economy is very related with defense spending. And I checked all numbers and facts from the references from original 'thediplomat' link. I think their analysis was proper and good. How do you just regard them as jsut scream? Because they are Western journals and Western news papers? OK. I feel like I'm talking to the wall, so I will stop this posting. It seems you don't want to accept and ignore all the evidences which works against Russian economy, and I feel tired of this.

"You don't know Russian, do you? I've read both the original report and CAST's statement about Putin's acceptance. It's nothing more than a PR attempt. The outcome of the Sochi meeting about procurement did fall in line with their report's suggestion and they did not want to miss such PR opportunity to come out and say, and I quote, "Therefore, we can state that Russian higher authorities have practically listened to our recommendations". Practically. They are commercial organization. Saying that Putin himself agrees with their suggestions/reports is a PR move. Doesn't mean their report is wrong, no, I do agree with it very much. Especially the part about plane and heli procurement."

I'm very poor at Russian so I rely on google translation, so maybe I'm wrong and I understand poorly. But I think CAST did some really good analysis. Maybe it is a coincidence that the CAST opinion works, but who knows?

  13. /me opens up article

    /me sees "2300 Armata tanks by 2020"

    /me closes article

But still I trust all other numbers and indications, supported by various economic journal's report and data. Russian economy is falling.

    "Daddy, you're not even trying!"

Not sure why you're doing this, just you don't want to believe the Russian economic breakdown? Whatever you think or try, it is fact that financial future of Russia is not nice.

LOL. So CAST says, to make themselves look cool. Reality? Not sure if he even knows about their existence. Tho their latest report seemed good, I'm not sure how much people "at the top" actually notice them. They did create a lot of fuzz by bashing Navy procurement, that's for sure.

CAST is Moscow-based think tank group, consist of various experts. I don't really understand why you are blaming most well known Russian think-tank group, but they tried to reform the RuAF. Putin accepted their 'opinion' during Sochi forum. Sorry for Rus navy, but Russia just can't afford all of the plans.

  14. http://thediplomat.com/2015/05/is-the-worlds-deadliest-tank-bankrupting-russia/

Gloomy forecast about Armata and Russian economy. The writer thinks that this "tactical weapon" might be a "strategical disaster" to Russian armed forces and Russian economy.

I think the author is too pessimistic in some sense, but generally his points are valid and important, and references are well provided. I also think Putin and Russia will be on the crossroad very soon.

What I know is, CAST already suggested several important points to Putin, and he accepted.

    http://vpk.name/news/132125_putin_uchel_rekomendacii_centra_ast.html

IMO, clearly, Russians know that their financial future is quite disappointing, and try to do something. But I really, really think that they need to solve corruption problem and brain drain problem, otherwise there will be no chance to recover.

  15. This question might be ok in tech question.

I tried to make my recording of CMBS with OBS and Shadowplay, but all failed.

    I'm using GTX765M laptop, with Window8 64bit.

Shadowplay was pretty obvious to fail, since it does not support for laptops to 'desktop capture', and Window 8 does not support Aero theme option. :/

For OBS, I don't know why. I think my settings were proper, but whenever I started the recording or preview, the game crashes.

Is there any other good free and light recording program for laptop gaming? Or if anyone succeed to record CMBS with OBS in laptop GPU, how did you do that?

    Thanks

  16. I thought that you could take screenies with SP but it appears that Nvidia still has yet to implement it.  If you have Fraps you can always run Fraps like normal but don't record with it so you do not get the resource hit that Fraps produces and just use it for screenies.  I believe the issue is that CM is an OpenGL based title which for some technical reason is not really a "Fullscreen" title thus you need to enable SP for "Desktop Recording"

I'm using laptop with GTX 765M, with most 350.12 driver version. But this damn shadowplay never works for my CMBS. Desktop Recording is disabled, and no recording was done. Do you have any idea about this? Also, which program is good for recording other than shadowplay?

  17. I'm not sure US / UA / RUS army use tracer rounds in real combat or not in real world. But, in-game, are there any mods to differentiate their colors? As far as I know, NATO use red, and OPFOR use green.

Also, is there any mod for stormy weather with lightning effect + sound? I'm not sure how the real weather during the summer of Ukraine, but it is just for fun :) Lightning doesn't need to be directly depicted. Rather, just 0.01 sec of increased brightness to all map and object would be enough IMO. We already have downpour rain condition, I think just add lightning effect and sound with heavy wind sound would be enough. Is there any?

    Thanks

  18. exsonic01,

While I can't speak to how things are for modern thermals, other than generally, I can tell you that thermals can be environmentally degraded to the point where the target disappears altogether. Circa 1980, I was at Hughes, which made the TOW ATGM and the TOW Night Sight. We had a bunch of math types who were doing some modeling but knew squat about what they were modeling. Our TOW guy, Bob Siegrist, who was instrumental in getting TOW into the Army originally while in it, decided to give them some field experience in the California winter. Weather was bad, with patchy cold fog where I was and socked in withdark clouds and some rain for everyone. They set up a TOW launcher (no TOW) with AN/TAS-4 FLIR Night Sight on a hill about a kilometer from where I was being TC on a bailed National guard M48A5. These geniuses, to the great mirth of our guy, set up in the mud rather than on the road! So they're peering down at me through this weather, and I've got a reservist driver, and we're maneuvering on the floor of a dry reservoir. They have me. They have me. More fog rolls in, and the rain really starts coming down. I'm gone! Pandemonium ensues on the radio. How can an entire tank disappear? They are freaking out. The rain lets up a little. They have me--until the heavens really open up, after which, I'm not there at all until the test was ended. Bob later told me our brilliant mathematicians looked like frozen drowned rats. Common sense isn't! Would add that tanks in such conditions, absent a heater, are brutal places, especially with no working radio and yours truly with a handheld radio poked out of a cracked hatch and cold rain running down the collar. All respect to the tankers!

AN/TAS-4 was a very early 8-12 micron FLIR with, compared to today's systems, a very poor MRT (Mean Resolvable Temperature). When it comes to MRT, you want as small a number as possible, for it is the IR analog of resolving power of optics. The better the MRT, the easier it is to find a target by being able to separate it out from the background temperature. Also, the TOW Night Sight had nothing like the zoom capabilities of the astounding stuff on the Abrams and Bradley. I tell you these things, not as a performance predictor in CMBS, but as a real world example of environmental degradation of FLIR performance. I guarantee you today's systems do much better than the now-fossil trying to find me, but fog and rain assuredly will negatively affect their performance, too. A tank that is itself cold and has only begun moving, as seen from the front, offers very little for a FLIR to see, as opposed to that lovely hot engine when viewed from the flank.

If you really want to explore the real world impact of environmental effects on modern FLIR performance, may I commend to your attention this Institute for Defense Analyses study, which should prove most informative?
