  1. For anything more, you need at least an anti-materiel rifle.

The Denel NTW-20 anti-material rifle with 20x110mm DU rounds would certainly be a threat to all WW2 APC and to most of the lighter early war tanks.

    http://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/imgs/denel-ntw20.jpg

But a.50 cal anti-material rifle would probably not be more effective than a WW2 .50 cal HMG - it' the same round, after all.

But regarding anti-material rifles, i have to think of the SSK .950 JDJ:

    http://www.isciencetimes.com/articles/5786/20130802/largest-caliber-rifle-ssk-950-jdj-rounds.htm

  2. That depends on the specific vehicle. For example the German Panzer I could even be penetrated by the HDEP ammunation of the US M203 grenade launcher, but the Tiger would be as invulnerable to the M203s HDEP rounds as any modern MBT. If we are looking at the modern AT-rocket launchers though, like the US AT4 or the diverse RPG varaints currently fielded by the Russians, things look different. For example even the compareably small AT4, which can penetrate up to 400mm of steel, would be able to destroy any WW2 tank, including the German super heavy cats like the Jagdtiger.

  3. You may have some very valid points and complaints about how CM is working, Wiggum (that is often hard for me to judge). But in my opinion, your very aggressive tone and attitude often disqualifies you from the discussion. Try acting a little more civil - perhaps you'll then get more constructive responses to your complaints.

I recommend reading Marshall B. Rosenberg books on Non-Violent Communication. The conclusion of his thesis is (in short) that it' s in general easier to make others comply / convince them of something if you dont accidentially trigger their subconcious defence mechanisms.

  4. I used 'Rollbahn' as Carius refers to the main road as the 'Rollbahn'.I've seen it used in a lot of contemporary accounts to describe a main road used as a supply route etc.

Hmm alright, then Rollbahn may be some sort specific military vocabulary. Another possibility would be that the general meaning of the word has changed during the past 70 years.

  5. Oh my god...this thread was about me unexpectedly having something very nice happen to me and look at the direction were going again. Cant we just stop it right now, please?

Probably not what you're really asking for but I'll mention that in discussion with tech support for Europa Universalis IV I discovered that the game uses the GPU for additional processing that does not include graphics. With such a nice system it might be interesting to see just how fast the game runs on top speed. If you've never played the game never mind, but if you have, then my frame of reference is that at top speed I can get 4-5 days per second, depending how late in the game I am.

EU has never been the kind of game i am in too. But thank you for reminding me that there are other interesting periods in histroy than WW2 and modern - i had totally forgotten that Atilla: Total War was recently released and i am big fan of the Total War series, so probably i am gonna give it a try. What else could i play? My budgets' s about 100€, and with Atilla costing 39,99€ on Steam, i still have money left for a second or maybe even a 3rd game. GTA V is tempting, but i still havent finished playing GTA IV. Homeworld Remastered (a 2015 remake of the 2003 classic Homeworld 2) is also definately a candidate, i have been waiting for this game for a couple of years, and it costs only 31,99€ on Steam, so there would be still 28,02€ left. Hmmm...any ideas on what i could spend those?

Oh, and congratulations on your good fortune!

Thanks! And thanks to the others who had kind words too! I totally forgot about that.

  6. Forget it. Judging by what i have read from you in other threads, i think that your intent is most likely to look up the hardware i bought and then tell me that i either bought it for a bad price or that it' s not good or whatever. And even if you wouldnt find anything, you would probably just make something up. I wont support you trying to piss me off.

And even if the next thing you tell me is that i misjudge you, that' s your problem, i neither trust you nor do i like you, bad luck.

  7. I actually doubt his new pc will be that much better then the old one...

His new PC is significantly better than his old one in every possible way, he just will have a hard time finding applications that actually need that much calculating power.

Sorry but no one in his right mind would spent 3500€ for a desktop pc (+ the money for you to build it).

"using only the best components available"...you mean all the greatly overpriced stuff nobody actually need ?

Stupid comment, there are numerous applications that require high end hardware that goes way beyond that of the average gaming PC. Think of servers, animated 3D art, brute force attacks, etc...

He could have just updated his old one for 500€ and would have a killer pc.

What did he say, what will he do with his pc...casual pc stuff and gaming ?

Yeah, i told him that this is not necessarily going to be cost-effective in terms of performace per euro...but he wanted it anyways! He' s the customer, it' s his money, i had fun building it, no problem.

Sounds like you had a hard time spending all 3500€ on just one desktop pc...

    Absolutely not!

...you could have build 3 killer high-end machines with that money...

Depends on what you call high end. I mean, the term "killer high end machine" is already that inaccurate and badly defined, there is really no point in argueing a "killer high end machine" and what' s not. But you could have definately built some above average gaming PCs that run contemporrary games at maxed out settings with reasonable FPS.

Anyways, i dont want your destructive comments in my thread. If you have a bad mood take it somewhere else.

  8. Dumbest operation name I know of is Operation Oration

    * dear god. A quick google indicates there were at least two Op Orations during WWII. WTF were they thinking? Edit: ... or maybe it was conscious meta humour?

Maybe they ran out of unique names...? World War 2 certainly had terribly many Operations but there is only a limited number words in the english language. At least Operation Oration was a better codename than calling the planned invasion of Cuba "Operation Ortsac" - yes, that' s Castro spelled backwards :D.

  9. To be honest I'm not sure how the "views" are tabulated. I know if I reload a thread several times they do not increment. Yet people do look at what I've posted and it seems to increase the "views" amount. I believe they are registered members, who else would even notice this forum and choose to remain unregistered?

I often read threads without logging in. I am not using auto-login, i only login if i am actually intending to post.

  10. ahhh damn.can we get at least children faces and perhaps sounds?

Haha, you are a terrible person ;). But seriously, if you want childrens faces and voices, it would be possible to add them via a mod.

I wish to point out that BFC have a track record of releasing patches to fix bugs at no charge.

I know. But someone asked if KG Egnel will be fixed with the battle pack, and i had to give my opinion on that.

  11. Will the broken campaigns be fixed in the CMBN battle pack?

Oh yes, good question, Kampfgruppe Engel, one of the stock campaigns (and probably some others as well) seems to have been ruined by one of the last patches/upgrades. There was a thread about that recently. Actually i think it would be more appropriate to fix this via a patch and not via a payed module/battle pack. It' s not new content, it' s old content that got broken by a patch/upgrade and it should be working, but it isnt.

    EDIT:

Here' s th thread reporting problems with the KG Engel campaign:

    EDIT2:

    Great new regarding Volkssturm/HJ btw.

  12. I know Volksturm and Hitler Jugend would probably be realistic forces the allies could encounter during the late war. But would I want to fight against kids and old men? Nah! A tad too realistic for my tastes. (We dont have civilians in game either)

Well i want a game as realistic as possible, at least regarding TO&Es of relevant military units. I understand why many dont want a game with child soldiers in it, but BFC could substitute the kids with grown men or only depict Volkssturm units composed of old men. Basically a Volkssturm unit in CM could be a Conscript, -2,-2, Unfit rag-tagged infantry formation equipped with captured italian and allied rifles, almost no ammo and a few panzefausts. There would not be a need to actually depcit the persons in the uniforms as children or old men.

    EDIT:

BTW my initial uqestion regarding these formations was directed at Steve and supposed to be answeared with Yes or No. I didnt intend to derial this thread into a discussion about this.

  13. Volkssturm units were legeally recognized as combatants AFAIK. According to 1*, Germany planned to recruit up to 6 million men between 13 and 60, though the actual number of Volkssturm men cant be determined due to the complete chaos of the final months of the war. According to this and other sources, there were about 175.000-200.000 Volkssturm KIA/WIA recorded, which indicates the Volkssturm was engaged in military operation on a large scale. The Hitlerjugend were mostly conscripted into either the SS or Volkssturm, most noteably in the 12.SS-Panzer-Division which was entirely made up of HJ boys, but the HJ did not fight as independet force. Luftwaffenhelfer were HJ-boys used to man AA guns.

  14. That's how it was with FI and BN going to v3 when RT came out...

Ah, yes, i had forgotten what it was like with FI and BN.

Now i have a nother question: the upcoming modules will take CMx2 to the end of the war. Will there be Volkssturm* (basically old men and children and occasionally even women) and Luftwaffenhelfer and Hitlerjugend* (both kids in their mid to late teens) militias? Will there be ruined cities so we can properly model, let' s say a Berlin '45 map?

Man, looking at these pictures makes me feel depressed. -_-

  15. I am 12 turns in now and - so far - there have only been minor setbacks. 1 Tiger lost for 9 T-34s and 2 Stalin tanks. Those Stalin tanks are really tough nuts to crack. At first i tried sniping them, trusting in the superior marksmanship of my elite crews, but although my guys scored hits quickly, it took about 5-7 hits to disable each of the 2 dead Stalins. Right now the remaining Stalins are pushing towards the center of the map and i am racing them to arrive first because i think my best chance to kill them without loosing too many Tigers is by setting up an ambush. But it is a risky plan - i am using the village that runs from SW to SE (what is it called again? Milankova?) as concealment for one of my Tiger groups as Avenue of Approach although i dont know if i got all of the T-34 that were in the village. There could be a lone survivor who could try to get the Hero of the Soviet Union medal! Currently the scenario is very exciting, i cant wait to see if my plan to ambush the Stalins works. Let' s see what happens next, i will report back then.

Also - on a side note - i think there might be a little error in the Briefing, or maybe a misunderstanding on my part. You are talking about a "rollbahn". What do you mean by that? I associate the term "Rollbahn" with an airport.

So, i just finished this scenario. My plan to intercept the Soviet push towards the center worked, 3 addtional IS-2s were destroyed in the process. At about 20-25 turns in, some of the remaining IS-2s tried ot attack my Tigers in the center in a pincer maneuver by flanking them from the north and east - but they had no chance. The russians didnt surrender and i had to click the turn button util the end. I got a Tactical Victory, 2 Tigers, 2 Stugs and 12 KIA/WIA lost on my side, the Russians lost 20 tanks and 80 KIA/WIA. None of the historical figures died, but some of the unkown soldiers were not so lucky.

It was a fun scenario and rather fast paced. It was nice to have big slugging match between two tanks forces without having to bother with commanding infantry. I was repeatedly amazed by how much beating the IS-2 can take.

Here' s screenshot i like of Carius hunting T-34s in the Malinova:
