  1. Speaking as someone who has only got involved in a very limited amount of software testing on very simple online payments project - you design a script to test, you identify some bugs, you then need to re-run everything, because sure enough, fixing something sometimes breaks something else that was working together, you then fix that thing and re-run everything all over again. Each round of testing takes a long time.

Now scaling that up to a game like CM would drive me round the bend. During the c3k/Bil battle (and boy, do I want to see how that one plus out), several bugs were identified that had subsequently been fixed for the release, so I am guessing that it is not like they did inadequate testing on the game and missed some things - I think it is more like they did loads of testing, found and fixed loads of bugs, and made a call on release on the basis of further testing. There must come a point where you have to make a decision to release.

Also, the more time they spend on the patch, the less time they spend on EF and modern....

And they are hard at work on the small bugs that got through - one very happy customer here - now if I could only stop getting hammered in Die Letze campaign, life would be all roses :o

Anyone read Sniper One yet? I'm getting all evangelical about it.

  2. And then, after all your efforts, you put your creation up on the repository and you get:

    a) absolutely no feedback whatsoever. Or,

    B) you get something back that's just so negative and unhelpful that it makes you wonder why you bothered.

If the community wants more content designed by the community, I suggest you nurture it and help it to grow instead of bashing it and quoting Darwin at the poor fledgling designer when he gets discouraged.

The patch now means that I can carry on with your Scottish Corridor campaign Paper Tiger, and it feels like a work of art. Goodness only knows how much time and effort went into these, full of variety and challenge, only missing the bagpipes (force specific musical accompaniment anyone?). I am guilty of some restarts after I got royally smacked, but absolutely loving them.

On a completely different topic, just finished reading Sniper One - an incredible book that I would highly recommend to anyone - a real squaddie level view of the Iraq (reconstruction?) period which was in fact high intensity combat - an absolute classic!!!

  3. No problems PhilM :)

Thanks for the help gents, so I guess CMBN and CMFI would be comparable to CMBO and CMBB then, two different games but generally the same? Im having a real tough time getting into CMBN. Guess Im missing stuff I loved in CMBO and all like the line of sight tool (I know I can use the target button) and stuff like the unit info display when you hit enter when you had a unit selected. I liked all the info there.

Great game still, just need more practice with it and the bocage is absolutely destroying me.

If you're not a fan of bocage, CMFI and its add-on are great games - thoroughly recommend them (check out the AARs to get a flavour).

  4. I know it's been said before, but I think Steve has said previously that if multiple people make the point then that moves it up the list - a command 'throw grenades'. At the moment I am not too keen on a target area order as the SMG often shoots off all ammo, if a threat appears from another direction the squad may not react, and I definitely would like to be able to chuck grenades over walls/through windows.

  5. Thanks, Alex! I'm really happy that you enjoyed it.

The AI plan is made for replays- you shouldn't find the enemy in quite the same places next time.

You're welcome benpark. It must be amazing to think that people from all over the world will be enjoying something you spent so much time on.

It actually would be good to know how much time went into it - I'm sure it must have been a fair while? Did you do everything yourself? How long do you think your playtesters spent?

  6. Finally achieved a victory on this one (stayed up to 2 in the morning to finish it) - a fantastic scenario - congratulations to the designer - you can tell that many many hours have been put into the map and particularly the set up.

I don't want to give too much away, so I can only recommend this if you haven't already had a go. I had several, and there was much despair before ultimate success. I try to comfort myself with the thought that this scenario is not expected to be won first time.

  7. The helmet issue is known, will check out the bunker, thx!

    Great, thanks

Also, not sure if a bug or not, but noticed in same battle that squads very close the platoon leader seem out of command (e.g. 25m away). They are in heavy woods but I would have thought voice command would be working. Might be due to the fact the Platoon leader is hiding?

I really enjoyed your two AARs - particularly Hamel Vallee - any chance of another one in the future?

  8. Just started playing 'Out on a Limb' MG battle. Couple of possible bugs:

    SPOILERS!!!

There is an AA gun on the same side of the bridge as the platoon, with a bunker by its side - I positioned a team in line with the bunker so that the AA gun couldn't see them, but the AA gun could see and shoot straight through the bunker.

Also, when viewing us troops from a medium distance, the models show without their helmets.

  9. Dude. Seriously? I'm calling you out. Mano vs. Mano. Set the parameters. Hell, pick my forces for me. I'm easy. We'll post our game publicly. Do it.

    Ken out.

Oh goodie, I was suffering withdrawal symptoms before the end of this one! AARs are way better than movies. You guys should give up your day jobs and do this full time! Real life is over-rated....

Emrys vs c3k - this should be interesting :)

  10. I'm really enjoying this AAR Ken, some awful bad luck with your tanks but I really like your aggressive approach - I haven't built up the courage to try a PBEM, but my single player approach can be summed up with - scout with minimum possible force, identify strongpoint, destroy strongpoint - which although I am sure is a preferred method, probably isn't realistic in many cases in WWII - and isn't exactly thrilling - it is great to see a different approach being demonstrated that does pay off in many ways - hang in there commander, reinforcements are on the way, just need to hold out a little longer and give the hun a bloody nose.

  11. trying to play through Courage and fortitude - eugh - thought I was just about going to get through Razorback Ridge when some artillery fell out of nowhere onto a choke point that I thought was out of sight of any spotters - anyway, a whole platoon was running through there at the time.... There went my reserve, so start again. Fantastic mission though.

Anyhoo - here's my one, several times during the mission I had set MG and BAR to provide covering far while I assaulted - quite a few times they 'reloaded' after only a few shots - no covering fire, my men got cut down. Aaarghh!!

So the idea would be - ability to manually force a reload (or even if troops have not moved for a couple of turns - they automatically reload).

  12. I can't image Battlefront would condone me deliberately lying/misleading you guys. This is my first AAR for them (and you) and I hope not my last. I am waiting for some evidence before I let you guys know exactly what one of the changes is. Unfortunately we are now caught up turns wise and Johnsy is away again so I may have to rethink my plan.

Well that's it - completely lost the plot now - this is worse than Alice in Wonderland! Are you playing with us Cpl Carrot??

  13. AlexUK are you still not seeing the woods for the trees?

I thought we were talking about urban warfare improvement - What has fighting in wooded-up areas got to do with it ;)

Like many of life's great mistakes, once the veil is drawn from the eyes it all seems so obvious.

I wonder how the backblast is going to be implemented. I definitely wouldn't want to be anywhere near a shreck going off - perhaps only fausts will be allowed, which given the short ranges might make more sense anyway.
