  1. To keep himself amused, the Sherman engages an FO team that’d been sent up to the top edge of The Orchard to retrieve a ‘schreck from a ‘schreck team that’d already been eliminated there.

In retrospect, trying to retrieve that one may not have been a very smart move, but I’m starting to get desperate for AT weapons. Strangely, there was no explosion when this round arrived – I wonder if he fired an AP round.

By this stage of the battle, the PaK only has a total of 7 rounds remaining, including those carried by the ammo team – 4 x HE and 3 x AP. That’s not a lot of death and mayhem to deal out, and I suspect it’s most useful role is as a threat in being. I consider moving the gun to another position to confound Elvis. Earlier I saw Elvis pushing one of his own guns about, and the crews get them moving reasonably quickly. But what dissuades me in the end is a combination of the belief that I can pierce the Sherman’s armour at 60m, and the disincentive of a packup time of over three minutes – the smoke is likely to be long-gone by before they can get out of there, leaving them desperately vulnerable.

Anyway, after waiting and waiting and waiting, the smoke finally clears. I have the gun lines up on the exact known position of the Sherman, and so just seconds after sighting it the round is on it’s way

But the round fails to penetrate. Given the hit location right on the rounded edge of the turret roof that probably isn’t surprising, but it’s still a bitter setback. Two AP rounds left.

The next round flies high over the top of the Sherman as it backs away in a panic, popping yet more smoke. One AP round left.

There’s some consolation in that at least the Sherman is scared of the PaK.

Uh oh. Hold the consolation. The crew all survive, but that last AP round is worthless. PROTIP: not noticing the second tank in overwatch while engaging the first tank is bad for your health.

I just realized that the Germans don't have backpacks. Not a nit-pick, I'm simply curious. Now that I think of it, rarely do you see pictures of German infantry wearing backpacks. You always see prominently the y-strap of course, the gas mask, zeltbahn, canteen, bread bag, ect., but no backpack... Does anyone have any information on their use/practice during WW2? Thanks!

  2. Hi Willy,

Peng and I grew up next door to you in Moorestown. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get from here to my parents in Marlton, to give you an idea of the distance.

Right now I am planning at my house. If the crowd looks like it will be too big for here I guess we'll look at other options. However, I've got no extra cash to rent space. I am very friendly with a local bar/restaurant that may left us use one of their dining rooms with the expectation that we'll be spending money eating and drinking.

Thanks, Elvis! I appreciate your hospitality! I'm definitely interested and wouldn't mind the drive. Although, I hope you don't kick things off too late in the day. I also wouldn't mind helping out with a little donation if the crowd gets too big. Keep me in the loop.

  3. No no no...The game will be released no earlier than April and no later than June/July.

Previews will take place around February/March, so no ealrier than that, and game seems finsihed enough to not go beyond mid summer (Also, Steve needs some vacations).

This puts the release roughly between May/June/July. So, its already 90 to 1. Not that bad till now.

Optimist will say May, pessimist will say July. So, Steve says June-he is quite a balanced type. 30 to 1. From all the June days, one is D-DAY. Its so damn obvious!

    I bet 5$ :)

I really hope it's an April release! However, I'm still quite happy that it's relatively close by. I thought it was going to be a late 2011 release. I'm very much looking forward to this game!

  4. I plan on hosting a preview party in NE Pa. I live near Wilkes Barre. That is about 1 3/4 hours North of Philly, 2 hours West of NYC.

Right now I am thinking either Friday February 18th or Sunday the 20th but it is open for discussion to get the best turn out. The hope is to have a couple of PC set up and do some LAN play and some solo action. My preference is for an afternoon into evening thing.

    Anyone interested let me know.

I'm from Cinnaminson, NJ which is minutes outside of Philly. I'm interested in this. What exactly are the details? Are you going to reserve a meeting room at a hotel?

  5. Playing games like this our brains want to hear "Hollywood" sounds. A lifelong exposure to Hollywood movie mayhem has conditoned us to expect pistols to sound a certain way, rockets to sound a certain way, light sabers to sound certain way. Nevermind that the sound may have originally been created in a sound studio by rattling a metal sheet and crumpling a paper bad close to the microphone. Hollywood sounds are the expected sounds. If you're explecting a 'Blap' and instead hear a 'Thump' something sounds off even if its an actual recording. :)

the thread is slightly getting off my main topic. Forget about the sounds for now and answer me this; will the game allow us to use bazooka/panzerfaust type weapons against infantry and buildings?

  6. In
the M72 makes what I would definitely call a tchoom sound. Or should I say TCHOOM. :P

But you're right, the sound of a weapon can be rather subjective, depending on location, distance, and a dozen other factors.

This is what I'm talking about! Besides the various cool sounds they provide, I hope we will be able to use these weapons vs infantry and buildings and not just vehicles - it's just as simple as it looks!

  7. recoilless gun = tchoom

    rocket launcher = pfwish

Based on my couple decades of first-hand experience with dozens of weapons types*. :P

    * not true

sheesh - ok gents, give me a break:eek: I served 5 years in the US Marine Corps as a 2171 Electro Optics tech. I worked on the TOWII missle system, Dragon, and the trigger assemply for the SMAW as well. I'm quite familiar with the various sounds of modern day weapons and thought CMSF was close enough.

My concern for Normandy though is how infantry will use its rocket type of weapons, that they will only be able to be used in an anti-tank role. Does anyone know for sure how it will be modeled in the game? Don't you hope you can blow a whole in a wall with a panzerfaust, ect?

  8. I was going to post this in the "specific gun sounds" thread but didn't want to take away attention from that post. I also love the sounds of all the different rifles and machine guns, especially of rocket type weapons. I really like how CMSF models rockets/RPGS and how they make a difference in a firefight. They are great at suppressing and taking out the enemy in buildings when small caliber rounds just ping off the walls harmlessly.

Since this is a WW2 game I wonder how Panzerfausts, Shrecks, bazookas, and rifle grenades are modeled in the game. Will infantry be able to use these weapons against soft targets/buildings? I hope they are not limited to use only against vehicles. In addition to the sounds of rifles and machine guns, I hope to hear the "whoosh" of pazerfausts being shot at a building, ect...

  9. Merry Christmas! :D

If I were to hazard a guess, Normandy is where the money is. ;)

There is indeed an Eastern front title being worked on as we speak... I think... maybe... somewhere. And preliminary work has already gone into the Bulge/late war title. And let's not forget the plans to transport modern war CMSF to the European theatre with improved game engine. Someone once totalled up the number of titles and associated modules scheduled. It was a lot. Like more than a dozen I think.

About Africa Korps. if I were, again, to hazard a guess its a good bet they've had enough desert fighting to last 'em for awhile. CMAK immediately followed by CMSF. That totals 6(?) straight years in the desert, I think.

I'm wondering about what your wrote. I was under the impression that Normandy is a WW2 version of CMSF & it's game engine, right?

  10. Edit to add: Whoops I mean "Baltic"

    This sounds promising:

    According to the Guardian

Promising? Lol - promising for our next world war? I imagine that if Russian were to get a little pushy it might want to take back the Baltic states. Keep in mind that the Baltic states have experienced an amazing amount of economic growth over the past twenty years. I think thats quite realistic for Russian wanting to get them back under its control. Going after Poland though is going a bit too far.

  11. Oh- I don't know about that... you can always ring up Otto Carius at his Tiger Apotheke in Herschweiler-Pettersheim if he has a spare moment or two from filling prescriptions!

Or maybe a polite letter by post? Rumor has it he still has a very sharp mind for detail. ;)

    p.s. note the historical section

Thats him! Thats really him! How did you find out about him? Very interesting...

  12. Hi I just saw an option to buy Caen on Steam. is that OK?

    Tks!

    '

Don't buy the Steam version unless your copy of Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 is also from Steam! However, Steam currently has all Theatre of War games on sale, so you would actually be saving money re-buying everything on Steam. Kursk 1943 is just $5 and the Caen add-on is $9! That's a total of $14, and I noticed Battlefront is selling the Download Only version for $25... If you don't mind Steam, then thats an $11 savings... As a matter of fact, you can now buy all the Theatre of War games as one package deal for only $11.25!!!

  13. Like others, I can't wait for "ASL Live Action"' er,...CM:Normandy. :D

And I know since 9/11, security is tight and BF is under heavy NSA scrutiny about releasing info to the eagerly-awaiting-to-put-money-in-BF's-pocket crowd, but maybe a few more bones???? I've read through all the current Normandy bones threads, but please forgive me if any of these were answered before.

    1) Will CM:N have crashed Waco/Hamilcar/Horsa gliders as flavor objects to place on maps? It would be a great disservice to leave these out, IMHO. And how hard can it be? (We could used downed choppers for CMSF and CMA as well, hint hint.)

    2) I read elsewhere in an interview with BF (Steve?) that we won't be going to the Pacific. WTF?!?! No Burma, no Guadalcanal, no Central Pacific Drive? You're kidding, right? (My Father was a combat vet at Kwajelein/Saipan/Okinawa...Pacific vets snubbed once again, I guess. (It's not the first WWII system to ignore the PTO.)

    3) Considering the above, tell me we're at least going to the MTO...North Africa, Crete, Sicily/Italy, eventually.

    4) And Early War in the West ...Poland/France, etc?

    Thanks!

Hey MJ, I'd like to see WW2 US Marine battles as well. At the very least we can hope for modders to take care fo that once Normandy is out. The pacific campaign provides a different kind of war and combat and should not be left out.

By the way, I'm a former Marine myself. I was stationed at Camp Hansen, Okinawa for 3 year, and had been to both Saipan and Kwajalein "the rock" a few times. Although when I was there back in the early 90's the only action I got was a few bar fights and the company of pretty Oki girls! One thing that I'll never forget of Kwajelein though is its not really an island, just a small strip of coral reef with one tiny aristrip. I could never imagine to horror the Marines of the "Old Breed" had to go through during the island hopping campaign. God bless your Father. Semper Fi!

  14. No! Do not "take your time" with CM:N. I'm sincerely happy for the modern warfare guys, but some of us are disinterested in CMA and NATO but still want to give you our money.

So with the release of the latest products, I hope it's full speed ahead with Normandy. Bring on the dedicated forum!

I dont know why, but Combat Mission Nato/ SHockforce never caught my attention. Ive been coming to these forums because Im into Theatre of War. However, I noticed the Nato Demo and downloaded it earlier today and WOW, it is a very nice game! I think I like it more than Theatre of War now... However, like you my real interest is WW2. I would rather see a WW2version of CM Nato! MG42s, Panzerfausts, Panthers, Shermans, BARS, ect ect!!!

  15. Updated control system focusing more on squads and not on individual soldiers. This is a feature listed in the upcoming TOW3-Korea.

Any details on this? More bones please.....

I second that! I feel that the way infantry is modeled is Theatre of War's main issue. One BIG way to change this is to move control from single soldiers to squads. A system similar to Close Combat would be a change for the better. Also, I'd like to see more fluid movement by the troops.

  16. Well that would be why then.. :)

Shame though I love playing with the big cats.

    An interesting read: http://www.achtungpanzer.com/pz6.htm

A little off-topic, but I thought I would reply with my thoughts. I find that artcile to be very interesting. Back in 1992 when I was a PFC in the Marine Corps I was stationed at Aberdeen for optics training. My barracks was near the outside museum and remember seeing that very same Elephant in the picture(they only had one there). I took a few pictures and pics of other big German tanks. I was always facinated with German armor and now I was face to face with these beasts! One thing I noticed different was at that time they were all painted a dull grey-white color and were rusting away outside. I thought it was such a waste...

Good news though. I recently seen a show on the military channel where they took that very same Elephant and restored it to perfect condition and now keep it under a roof! That Elephant is a real survivor!

  17. I got 3 CTD (on my first and only 3 attempts...) with my fresh DL patched copy of the game just before startin the tactical game (OOB/ rosters and options are full playable).

My system (new PC bought 2 weeks ago)

    I5 core

    6gb Ram

    Geforce GT230 1,5 gb

    Win7 64bit

    Thnks

    Bye

    Totola

I recommend that you do a clean delete of the game and all of it's files, then reinstall. Even though you have a new computer, make sure that you are all up to date will with eveything such as drivers, ect. I am having no issues whatsoever. The game is running very smoothly for me, I have no complaints.

  18. first off, congrats to the developers for releasing the game. Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on how the infantry has improved.

is tow the true successor to close combat? your thoughts are welcome.

also, if you anyone has a AAR they can post on youtube. I love watching user created Video AAR's.

    thanks a bunch.

I feel that the infantry has improved greatly since the demo came out. The are quite repsonsive, seem to work together well and even have little hand to hand combat when they fight in close quarters. They did a fine job fixing it. Infantry also have good survivability while moving over long ranges now. Overall, Infantry has been fixed!

Now, I noticed something els thats bothering me. I cant seem to be able to get tanks to fire at and destroy buildings. Has anyone been able to?
