  1. Schrullenhaft - thanks for checking. That would certainly make sense given that the pattern with CMBB works fine in my case too. Any ideas about how I could resolve this with CMAK, given that there clearly isn't a general problem with compatibility? Is there anything I might be doing wrong?
  2. Thanks, Schrullenhaft. It may well be something I'm doing wrong at this end. As I mentioned, the really weird thing is that we are also playing a CMBB game quite happily, even though the situation is exarctly the same - I have v1.04 and my opponent v1.03. So it's difficult to understand why CMAK isn't working on the same basis. Do let me know if you come up with any answers.
  3. Hi there - I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on a problem I've run into with the 1.04 patch on CMAK. Basically, I only discovered the CMx1 games in 2009, so when I bought CMAK it was already v1.04. I've now just started a PBEM game with someone who has 1.03. Whenever I try to load his setup file the game says we have different versions and need to upgrade accordingly. As we're both using Windows XP, there seems little justification in making him pay for 1.04. But since I have a 2009 edition of CMAK, I can't downgrade to 1.03 to make our versions compatible that way. Just to add to our general sense of mystification about the whole thing, we are simultaneously playing a game of CMBB which works fine, even though our respective versions are similarly 1.04 and 1.03! Anyone had experience of this and got any ideas about how we can sort it out? Thanks, Tiresias.
  4. Hi Joe, Excellent; thanks for the response. Will PM you with some contact info, etc.
  5. Hello; I'm a newcomer to online play seeking opponents in order to get started. I think I'm set up right in terms of ports being open, etc., but haven't tested it in the absence of an opponent, so you might have to be patient. Have been playing CM for a while and am reasonably practised at the game, but not at human vs human play. Don't mind getting the proverbial kicked out of me, though. I have all games and mods, including the old CMx1 games. Happy to play any side in any game. Would prefer Wego to Realtime in CMx2, however. PM me, or leave a message here, if interested. Thanks.
  6. It was the certainly case in the old CMx1 games that hiding had exactly the effect you describe - namely reducing the casualty rate, although some will still be sustained. I would imagine that in addition the order to hide simulates ad-hoc concealment wherever the soldier in question happens to be - if any rudimentary cover presents itself they will use it in whichever square they are located and therefore reduce their chances of getting hit. This may not be particularly helpful if you're lying in a wheat field, but moreso if you're located in somewhere with an uneven ground level or next to a wall. I've also noticed that casualties on the AI side of things inflicted by an artillery bombardment are surprisingly low, except where they lose morale and start running. This is probably for the same reason.
  7. Hmmm. How strange. OK; will try again this evening; thanks for the replies.
  8. Hello all, I'm using the 1.01 patch on Mac, and have noticed problems in the scenario editor when trying to apply damage to buildings. I can create major structural damage (ie: reduce the place to rubble - ALT-SHIFT is the cobination if mem serves). But the option to inflict moderate damage - which allows you to just damage a wall bit or create a hole in it, or whatever - no longer seems to be functioning. Has anyone else had this problem, or know of a solution? Couldn't find this elsewhere on the forum using search, so thought I'd ask. Thanks.
  9. Dunno if I'm remembering this correctly, but the problem with CM1's 180 degree cover arcs, while great in principle, was that they didn't apply once a unit changed facing. The 360 option nails this, with the alternative of a more specific setting if you're setting an ambush in a particular area, etc.
  10. Hello both, Thanks very much; this is extremely helpful. You are right, Wushuki - I was thrown by the pop-ups to some extent. Now you've both explained it the whole thing makes a lot more sense. I'm very grateful - thanks again!
  11. Hello all. I'm new to the Strategic Command series and am really enjoying my first encounter in the WW1 game! However, I am struggling to get my head around mobilization and was wondering if a more experienced player could help? After reading the manual, I understand that mobilization is linked to belligerence and can therefore affect a country's ability to make the most of its MPPs, coupled with the industrial modifier. However, I am not clear how to establish how fully mobilized a particular country is, and whether or not its mobilization is increasing, and by how much? A country's mobilization rating does not seem to be the same as its belligerence rating, but I could be wrong (?) I am also not 100% clear on what mobilization means in terms of its effects on production beyond the modification of MPPs. In the case of Russia, for instance, I am aware that at the start of the main campaign the country is still mobilizing. But I am not clear what the effects of this will be. For example will new units appear in a preassigned location and are they the same as the units already marked down as "in production" for Russia when the game begins? In short, I'd be really grateful if someone could explain how mobilization starts and can be monitored in the game, and what its consequences are. Sorry if this is an easy one to answer, but for a new player experiencing the game for the first time, there's a lot to take on board! Many thanks!
  12. Hello - I'm new to the Strategic Command series and can't seem to find an answer to this basic question: Basically, can you only play either as the Central Powers or the Entente, or can you choose to lead a particular country? If the latter, can you choose to lead just a minor power? If I've missed a thread answering all this, please do point me in the right direction. Many thanks!
  13. Yes, good point(s) about BFC's limitations as a small (and excellent) concern. And I agree, CM:SF is still great regardless of its shortcomings - as someone who has only just joined the CMx2 bandwagon belatedly, having in turn been a galvanised latecomer to CMx1, I'm like a kid in a sweetshop with it at the moment. Can't wait for CM:BN. Thanks for all your thoughts on this. Oh yeah - and Euri, I'll do my best to be more clairvoyant in future...
  14. Thanks Zebulon; I had kind of got that impression about the focus having shifted to CM:BN. I agree Normandy looks excellent and I'm particularly looking forward the improvements they're making to unit selection in QB generation. But it's still a shame about CM:SF - would have liked the variety of, y'know, a bit of rain and stuff. Although I am, as I said, really enjoying CM:SF, it does feels to me a bit as if BFC released a game that was only partially complete and then decided to move on to something else without ever really finishing it. I wonder if this is because it was a sort of guinea-pig game for CMx2, the long term goal of which is really to provide the engine for an enhanced series of WW2 games?
  15. Hello all, I'm sure that this must have come up before but can't seem to dig up the appropriate thread, so apologies for double/triple/etc.-posting. My question is: Are there any plans for the future development of CM:SF or is it now done and dusted? In particular, is it envisaged that other months/years and the appropriate weather conditions will at some point be unlocked for use? I recently purchased the game and am really enjoying it but am disappointed that months other than May June and July, as well as various climatic conditions, are listed but unavailable. I appreciate that they are offered as part of CM:Afghanistan, but since that's a separate game I see no point in listing them in CM:SF if there is no intention to use them in the future. Perhaps I am just spoiled by the old CMx1 games and the wide variety of conditions they offered! I'm also aware that a CM:SF2 is planned at some stage but since the rumour is that will be in a "temperate" setting I presume that it will, again, be a distinct entity simulating a different conflict. Again, sorry for the inevitable duplication of someone else's question somewhere in this forum.
  16. Sorry if someone has asked this before, but I've been searching old posts for about 15 mins and can't find the answer. My question is: In an operation, if the weather remains consistently good and the temperature is hot or warm, will wet or damp terrain become drier, or will it stay the same? The manual mentions terrain getting worse if it rains, snow melting, etc., but doesn't talk about the possibility of it improving. Thanks to anyone who can advise.
  17. Hey there, I've traditionally been a PC User but am thinking of buying a Macbook Pro, which comes with an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card. Could anyone tell me whether this will run CMBO, BB and AK? I'm guessing I might need to emulate Windows XP via Boot Camp. Thanks!
