  1. I just downloaded the steam version of ToW 2 Kursk and I still have not managed to find out how to apply the latest patch? No option I see in Steam at all. No way I can see my version, so I am unsure which one I got and how to doenload latest patches. Any idea?

Also in the main menu I see the "Battles" and the "USer Campaigns" greyed out. Does this mean these 2 only activate after downloading some user edited or mod battles and/or campaigns?

  2. Quick update for your info: We have managed to play our first MP game. Not sure what exactly did it, but here it goes:

I deleted the lone repository mod scenario from my MP folder and then I re-installed the uberpatch. After that I installed the JSH v1.3.1 mod.

My "steam version" partner also installed the mod, and voila. 1st MP game played.

    Thanks, for the advice.

  3. But oh well, pointless chit-chat never hurt anyone. :D

No harm in at least trying! Although I'd doubt Steam's stance on a set of T&C's qualifies as confidential or legally undisclosable. The T&C's details themselves obviously might, not so a given party's stance on discussing them or not. BFC is making his already very clear.

Other than that, welcome to the club brother! :D

  4. Customer requests for being on Steam, or against Steam, have zero impact on the equation. Therefore, asking us to be on Steam or to stay off Steam won't change or preserve the status quo.

    Steve

Of course, do as you please. Your business, your decissions. It is a fun and interesting topic though, so bear with us! :D

Just as a matter of curiosity: You speak of the Steam "contract" terms and conditions as if they were set in stone and non negotiable? Is that really so? No room to counter propose? I mean, I would suspect them Steamrolling (pun intended) where possible, but I would be surprised if it is really zero tolerance.

PS: if we can not see the new CM:N forum or have any more bones we have to spend our time talking about "alternative" stuff, haven´t we! :D

  5. Looks like resources in one of the game installations are completely messed up (game tries to load resources that do not exist because the specified path to them is wrong). To play MP, two games must have exact resources. Did you or your friend have any mod installed? If yes, both of you must have exact version of it installed properly.

But both of us in SP have no problem. If resources were messed up would we be able to play SP separately?

Only things I can think of on my end is that after the Kalypso uberpatch I downloaded that ToW_1.exe and that I ve tried to download an aditional MP scenario from the repository that may have messed up my MP scenario folders? Could that be the explanation? (by the way my partner and me tried always to play one of the standard MP scenarios, not the repository one)

Also, I have the uberpatch for the Kalypso version, while my partner got his already built in his Steam copy. Would that make a difference?

Is tehre any way in the log to tell who´s ressources are messed up? i.e. my partner's or mine?

If I re-run the uberpatch, would that re-set and clean my MP scenario folders?

  6. CM:N on steam seems to only make sense if there was no cost or significant revenue loss downside for BFC.

As some of you have pointed out and without knowing the actual Steam usual cut and arrangements it is prolly not too far of a stretch to suspect those current arrangements would make it unnatractive plus there would be no guarantee of effective promotion in the platform, which would be the main value proposition. From that standpoint the budget that would eventually be consumed by Steam is maybe better off put to good use in something else.

Now this could be turned around in eventual dealings with Steam: "Hey guys, your platform will probably not promote an inch further our product so we are not big fans... but if you let us in at virtually no cost and having full control on the price then we would be more than happy to oblige", kind of thing. No downside in exchange for a "small" potential of "some" promotion, just would seem fair. Another option to consider would be to offer Steam a cut of some kind conditioned to a certain minimum level of sales per given time period etc through Steam (said level decided by BFC based on BFC own economics and knowledge of tehir product life cycle etc), either in a linear way, step changes or a combination etc.

Obviously Steam may probably still see no value in this deal either, but one of the pillars of steam is based on building momentum, positive network externalites and scale (the more games they can offer in their libraries the more players that may join and/or the longer a current steam user will stay loyal ---> the more players in, the more game developer/publishers taht may be interested in using Steam ---> reinforcing cycle) so you never know until you ask.

No harm in at least trying no? The answer will probably be a big fat NO, but the most BFC can loose is a couple hours.

PS: for what is worth I am also a part time FPS, PS3, SC2, L4D2 nutcase that happens to love the CM series above all, ahem... many things.

  7. Hi,

My friend and me we both have ToW 1 with the uberpatch installed, so we both have the 1.10.0.81. version.

I bought on CD, the Kalypso English version a while back then patched recently. My friend downloaded from Steam his verison already patched up to 1.10.0.81.

Single player for both runs fine. But when we tried multiplayer it did not seem to work:

    - Game created fine, my partner joins me fine. When the game is loaded after a few seconds whomever has joined the game crashes to desktop. We tried first me hosting and then him hosting. In both cases whomever joined crashed after a few seconds following loading of scenario.

    - We both used hamachi IP network to connect. First we tried direct TCP IP (virtual IP), and then we tried Network connection. Both types of connections worked fine with hamachi, but in both cases we had the same crash after loading of scenario.

    - The scenario chosen was Steel rage

    - We also tried connecting to the server (Internet option) and I could create a game fine. My friend saw the game but when he tried to join the system timed out and could not connect. The same happened to me when he created a game in the server.

Man, I think we have tried everything... any ideas?

PS: forgot to mention after the uberpatch install I started to get a "missing CD" error that I solved by downloading the ToW_1.exe from here: ftp://ftp.1cpublishing.eu/Theatre_of_War/ToW.exe I can play single player fine, but for multiplayer would this be the reason of the crashes? I have W7 64bit

  8. Thanks guys,

It seems I got the difficulty levels wrong then. I thought the hardest level was just the base line for realism, AI accuracy etc including moral. And that the other 2 "easier" levels where just downgrades on enemy accuracy, penetration etc?

Does the hardest level give extra-ordinary (above realistic) bonuses to the AI? If yes, what would be the normal, realistic difficulty level then? The medium one with moral?

I am not planning on inflicting more pain on myself than strictly necessary! :D

  9. BFC keep everything very close to their chest though and there's absolutely nothing anybody can do to change their mind. That's just the way they like to play things. Frustrating as hell! :D

Hope you're right! It's either that or we really still have a long way to go before we start seeing the light at end of the tunnel !

  10. Well, here enemy just overruns you - with such superiority tactics are optional:)

:) Addmitedly I am playing at Veteran level, for realism, but does your comment mean this 3rd Polish scenario is harder than average because the historical background of the event or is this the general level of difficulty for the rest of campaigns?!?! :P

  11. I've played the first Polish mission not long ago, took 3 75mm, a couple of infantry squads and a light AT gun. Position your precious 75mm guns in 'hull-down' position, ideally behind a bush - this way they likely won't be seen until they open fire. Assign best gunners to them and hold fire until enemy armor comes closer (but not too close of course) to not waste ammo. And don't forget to save from time to time:)

    Thanks,

Managed finally to get past the 1st two Polish missions and onto the 3rd one. This one really looks like a challenge, including PZ IV's!

I still reel at the seemingly unrealistic behaviour of AI tanks just swarming through trenches and within the lines of my own armour as real heroes... but maybe that is just the real blietzkrieg and my own understanding of WWII tactical issues is poor! :D

  12. Not sure if it is there but I have not been able to find it. Is there an in game option to save the entire battle and watch it later as a replay?

Looking for a pratcical way to do an AAR and I would prefer to take the screen captures etc after the game has been played.

  13. I believe I know the answer but is not immediately obvious from the available info thus I need to ask...:

Are ToW 2 Kursk improvements in terms of game mechanics and features applied to ToW 1 if also installed? or are they both fully independent games?

In other words, can I play ToW 1 campaigns and battles using all the improvements brought by ToW 2 Kursk?

  14. Reading these old threads as I have just installed ToW 1... I am playing the Polish campaign and I believe this is the same scenario I am currently playing but from the Polish point of view... equally challenging for the Polish side! :D

My 75mm guns not as efficient as the ones you describe although I also positioned them in the hill at the back... I only managed to get 2 of them of the total 4 available in the initial set up troop list though. Maybe I need to sacrifice some troops for guns, hmmm

  15. I just tried it again. The UBER PaK40 kills everything in sight. This time, 3 M4's and 3 squads. All killed. Shermans got off one round at it. One round out of three tanks! I think I am lacking a fundamental understanding of how the game works. I watched that gun fire 20 plus rounds.

I watched a M-10 fire an AP round at a running man (right around 100m) and hit him. I am sorry, but that is just plain silly!

    Mike

No "on board" mortars in ToW 1?

Reading these posts a bit late but... Yeah I have also succumbed to playing ToW 1 ( I have not decided about buying Kursk just yet) while I wait for CMx2:N !!! I actually find it a reasonably satisfying experience alhough I also find some silly things...

Enemy armour for example seems to behave a bit a la Command and Conquer.... just swarming my infantry positions (unsupported by their own infantry), with no regards to hidden infantry in woods or trenches nearby. Now the AI was lucky my infantry did not have any anti armor weapons worth of that name (or maybe the AI knew it?) but still it seems a bit C&C'ish to me. I am also new to the game so I am sure some nuances of infantry vs armour combat at close range still eludes me in ToW. I guess I am maybe too used to the much more carefull and static use of armour in CMx1?

Enemy infantry for the most part seems to specifically ignore concealed or protected advance and preferes the wide open fields in plain sight of my MG's etc.

Nevertheless many other aspects of the game seem quite fair: balistics, penetration angles, armour positioning with hull downs etc seem to be more or less ok. Other than that I am trying the Polish campaign on "Realist" difficulty level and it is proving quite tough and challenging!

I am yet to see an AP round hitting squarely at an enemy troop but that would just be all worth it in itself! :D
