  1. Yesterday I started the Crossroads trilogy mini campaign in real time. I only paused the game when reinforcements arrived or when I wanted to give many orders simultaneously (e.g. when a large enemy force was moving through my troops FOV and I wanted to engage them). It was a lot of fun and almost like a completely different game.

The result of the first mission was a major vicotry for me with 3 KIA and 24 WIA. In my last attempt in this mission which I played in WEGO I already had this amount of casualties midway through the scenario. I saw me moving my squads up carefully and slowly, one action spot at a time until my virtual soldiers received incoming in which case I let them hit the deck, pop smoke, return fire or whatever. Doing this is not possible in WEGO of course and it highly reduced my casualties (which are still a bit high maybe, but I'm not a very good player anyway ;-P).

I used cover arcs more than I normally do in WEGO and I had the impression that the AI is quite reluctant to engage (faint) targets inside their cover arc, especially if only a part of the squad has LOS to it (target line is grey instead of blue).

What I most like about RT, and what Paper Tiger already said, is that you can play "faster" with RT. I was able to play the aforementioned 90 Minutes scenario in about 2 hours or so while I played on the same scenario for several days in WEGO and still had not finished it.

Well, thanks for starting this thread Paper Tiger. I've never really tried RT before. Not because I'm a militant WEGO player who is afraid of change - I simply didn't do it.

  2. The Ofp/Arma community is a bit divided about what to expect from Ofp2 and Arma2 I think but by now most of the people think Arma2 will be the better combat simulator than Ofp2. I haven't really followed the development of both in the past but the last preview of Arma2 confirmed my opinion that it has high potential to be as disastrous as Arma when it was released (the initial Arma release was buggy as hell and high expectations of the community were disappointed - I think the community is in the exact same situation now before Arma2 release than it was a few years ago before Arma was released.)

To get back on topic: I also think that infantry is very fragile in CMSF compared to CMBB or any other previous CM game. I did not observe anything about it getting better or worse with the patches (Steve said the kill ratio of high explosives was tuned down since 1.0 if I remember correctly). Fact is that it is far more easy to get your infantry wasted in CMSF than in CMx1 games. But what is the reason behind that? The 1:1 representation? Are the modern rifles/weapons more lethal than WW2 ones? I know it is a bit like comparing apples and oranges and I know something similar has been discussed before but I'm too lazy to search this thread and read it to find out the conclusion :P

  3. ArmA is the successor to OFP is it not? OFP2 is something else entirely... (and apparently not that good? I havn't followed the series in a while).

Ofp was developed by Bohemia Interactive as well as Arma and Arma2. Codemasters published Ofp and now is developing Ofp2 on their own.

  4. Actually, someone did mention such a tactic, but not until the Dec. 1944 issue of Intelligence Bulletin:

Interesting link. I'm undecided about how much to believe from this report as it does not state how many NCOs or officers observed those behaviours. But nothing in this report sounds completely unbelievable, so... I'd better say: how much of the things said there can be assumed to be a common German tactic, e.g. "The crew bailed out immediately, and we thought the tank was out of action. However, the gunner remained in the vehicle. After we had stopped watching this particular tank, the gunner fired two rounds at us"

  5. As for bundles, we definitely will be offering bundles. Bundles are always a good thing for both customer and us.

    Cool

Will the bundle come in a "two in one" installer? And will this require different patching of the base game and the two modules? I hope not since this can't be what you want, there are already patches for 4 different branches of the game (Paradox version, Battlefront version, Gamersgate version and Marines) and I don't think you want to have two more like "Brits module version" and "Marines and Brits bundle" version patch. Please say yes :)

  6. This may sound dumb but I'm asking anyway:

How can this be useful to scenario designers?

Wouldn't it be more useful if the scenario or map editor had an option to load an image overlay (like it is possible in the map editor for Highway to the Reich for example)?

I mean you still have to alt-tab all the time between the map editor and the google earth in order to make your map, don't you?

  7. As far as CMC itself (not CM:BB) is concerned, there is an interesting thread running at Gamesquad. It will be interesting what the folks over there come up with:

    http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?t=83110&page=12

I've read almost the complete thread now (it was the first time I really dealt with CMC - I never followed the threads in this board much, I only had general interest in CMC) and I came to the conclusion that my operational level wargame of choice remains the Airborne Assault series. Actually I think CMC never had (even a remote) chance of being as good as Highway to the Reich or Conquest of the Aegean.

Anyway: Thank you for trying Hunter!

  8. Unfortunately I have to give fair warning about its DRM system.

    [...]

There are all kinds of issues with this in places I travel. It basically means on my two and three weeks trips to some parts of the world, I won't be able to play this game.

And exactly this is the reason I won't buy this game. It's a pity because I've been hearing only good things about it apart from the DRM.

I don't think SES will get rid of the DRM soon. They are too paranoid about it from what I've read in their "official" forums.
