  1. Actually I passed the 1,000 mark some time ago and my uploads to the site currently stand at 1033 with ones at the CMx site and CMSF site.

On a serious note, there are still quite a number of items to be uploaded where we are blocked by the "already used name" and other messages. Any progress on that as mfred is catching me up!

    cheers

  2. Had an experiment this evening.

T34-85 with Regular against three PzIVJ (with no ammo)

Starts at 1600m with a shoot move of 150m followed by a scoot move of 150m.

    0:00 start

0:11 moves forward 150m and stops

0:40 fires at 1140m from halt moves off again reloading on move

0:56 fires on move at 1125m

end of move one: has 115m left to travel so has moved 185m. Has 90m left of (fast) scoot move, so put in a 5m shoot move after that followed by an 80m scoot move which should leave a few seconds at the end for another fire from halt.

    1:00 moving at fast

1:17 halts and fires as planned

    1:23 moves on again reloading

1:25 fire on move and reloads on move

    1:44 fires on move again

1:50 stops and fire just at end of move.

So a good result really was getting about a 1% hit chance while firing on the move and a 40% chance while halted. I reckon the optimum move is 100 shoot and 100m scoot which would give you a shot half way along and you would still be moving at the end. The second move would need a short shoot move of say 50m and a longer scoot of 150m. This pattern would keep your tank moving with no waits to process new orders and a firing position about every 150m.

Will try with earlier T34s and on different ground conditions.

  3. Reading about Russian tanks attacking, I do not think that 'Hunt' is the best move for them. The accounts talking of rushing forwards until reaching a bit of flat ground, stopping, firing and then moving onwards. Perhaps the best way to do this is to do 'Shoot and Scoot' only in a straight line forwards rather than the traditional forwards and reverse.

    What do people think?

  4. I am not sure that I agree with that. Look at the performance of a 'standard' panzer division in 1943. At Kursk after a long rest and refit, the 6th Panzer had 105 tanks on its books. Day one of the battle (in which it failed to do any fighting at all due to a blown bridge) the total of runners was down to 82, Day Two of the battle after a day spent crossing the river behind their own lines and a small skirmish, they are down to about 75. At any one time the unit would have had a number of vehicles cycling in and out of the workshops and on any long march a number of tanks would drop out due to defects as minor as a failure of a water pump, electrical failure, etc. In 1940 British tank regiments were lucky if half the tanks made it on a 30 mile march, while the halt and the lame caught up later.

Likewise look at the problems with the new Panther at Kursk yet this went on to be a very reliable tank.

    Just a thought.

  7. Yes did the modify thing and according to the menu the programme should open the right install. But no it keeps on opening the wrong one.

Tried rescan but it only found the wrong installs.

Will try renaming the folders, deleting the current versions and re-scanning, hoping to fool it into finding something but it could screw up my mods!

    cheers

  8. I cannot get PBEM Helper programme to work correctly.

I have several installs of CMAK and CMBB but cannot get PBEM to switch between them. It stubbornly stays on the original install and will not modify the path to the .exe file. So I can only play any PBEM on my test rig rather than on my fully functioning install. And I cannot get it to play my Normandy install of CMAK rather than my North Africa one.

Can anyone tell me how to change this please.

Have read DieselTaylors note but it still will not change on either CMAK or CMBB.

  9. I like that story a lot - it has a simplicity about it that is appealing.

The only similar story that I have is from the C15th. The main dining hall at New College Oxford has a huge timber roof one of the largest in Europe and built in the C15th. At the start of the C20th it was noticed that the roof which was oak, was getting woodworm and would have to be replaced. But where asked the Dean and Chapter are we to get such great timbers to replace the roof? Trees had been heavily felled during the Napoleonic War and the Industrial Revolution, so there were no longer any great oaks growing. A Junior Dean spoke up fro the back and said why don't we ask the College Forester? The Forester was a gnarled figure who had no been seen in the college for 20 years. When he appeared he simply said "Oh I was wondering when you were going to ask about the Hall Copse". It appears that the original builders, knew full well that after 500 years an oak structure develops woodworm, being craftsmen of long standing. They also knew that it would take 500 years to grow trees of sufficient height to replace the roof, so being men of foresight, they planted a stand of oaks to replace it when the time came. This was known to the generations of College Foresters who had guarded the stand of trees through one national emergency after another.

Rarely do you find such an example of hope in the future as you do among the builders and Foresters of Oxford.

  10. Firstly the game is hard coded so no mod will alter the play of the game. Mods will only alter the look of the game but you can make it look and sound more realistic.

Ok This is what you want:

McMMM mod programme so that you can keep trackof everything.

Nisseuh JuJu and Pat for terrain

MikeyD and DavidI for your main vehicles, Pat for DAK (HeinzBaby, Gaut, Vossie, Frontschwein for variety)

    AndrewT and DavidI for infantry

    Tarkus Dirty Olive user interface

DAF or Uncle Tgt for mystery vehicles

    DAF Denser Dust

    MikeyD Skies

    Malakovski Dusty and dirty bomb

    Phillippe exit markers

    Pat sandbags

    Father of None sound mod

To play Europe 1940 you can mod the game using CM West mod set.

To play Europe 1944 you can use CM Normandy mod set.

You can get your mods at http://cmmods.greenasjade.net/mods and can get scenarios at the Scenario Depot at http://www.the-scenario-depot.com/. If you look for Der Alte Fritz as designer you will find the Sorted Scenario Packs there which will give you 1300 decent scenarios.

    cheers

  11. Rolf Hinze is quite good if a bit high level for your needs. He served with 19th Panzer Division.

Zetterlings Kursk 1943 is a good book.

III Pz Korps at Kursk has a lot of ground level info but is an English translation of a German translation written in French. Needless to say the English is awful.

Panzers on the Eastern Front is quite good for local colour as is Losa and Tank Rider by Bessenov.

  12. Having actually worked with David Glantz, I can tell you that he has actually had some of the best access to Soviet archives of any westerner, he has an huge amount of documentation in his possession and he has a wide range of contacts with both German and Russian historians.

One of his main aims has always been to bring Soviet documentation into sight in the West, so that a balanced view can be taken, not necessarily saying that these documents are fair or give a true picture, just that they should be examined.

And he has spent a fair amount of time rubbishing the madder sort of Russian post-Stalinist historians.

  13. Sorry there is no way that Paul Carell can be compared to Glantz. Paul is a journalist and his work is primarily a collection of reminissences from German soldiers. It is good stuff but cannot be relied on for accuracy. Glantz is a professional historian and researcher.

A better candidate would be Earl Ziemke or for the Panzer troops Jentz.

  14. Vark

I think you are right. I always found Pioneers had to wait for the tank to come to them being the best policy. As for TH being over modelled, again you are correct but I think it makes up for the Fausts and Zooks they had in reality but do not have in the game. It is the fact that there is nothing in between the poor Molotov Cocktail and the super RPG, but in reality, the Russians used mines, grenade bundles, explosive charges, explosives pulled into the path of tanks (rather like police stingers), etc.

The main point is the rather passive methods the Russians have to use against heavy German tanks as their own tanks are rather out gunned. So heavy artillery, mines, tank hunters and the occasional 57mm ZIS2 are your main weapons. Use your tanks and superior infantry to kill his infantry and make his heavy cats expose themselves is the asymetric tactic to use.
