Since Prig - perhaps even before his outbursts - but especially following his insurrection, the Kremlin has been gripped with fear about the potential of any top brass in the TOA "going rogue".

I'd suggest the main reason we haven't ever seen large localised downing of arms from the RA rank and file is due to command and control exerted by the leadership in the field (as one would expect). But when we reach a point where these individuals are no longer toeing the line, voicing dissenting views, that's when the dominoes are at most risk of tipping.

After Prig, the Kremlin is on high alert (with immediate consequences) for any dissenting senior staff.

I think this is also Putin "cleaning house" after the election of any hint of disloyalty.

  2. Russia Arrests Top Commander Who Slammed Putin's Military (msn.com)

A senior Russian commander who criticized the Russian military and its treatment of soldiers operating in southern Ukraine has been arrested, Russian state media reported on Tuesday.

Major General Ivan Popov, who had headed Russia's 58th Army, was "arrested on suspicion of fraud," Russian state news agency, Tass, reported, citing a law enforcement spokesperson.

Popov was removed from his command of Russian troops in Ukraine's annexed southern Zaporizhzhia region In July 2023 after he criticized the Russian Defense Ministry for failing to provide sufficient support for the country's fighters.

Popov condemned what he called a "lack of counter-battery combat," too few resources to scout for artillery and the "mass deaths" of Russian soldiers.
In a recording published to social media by Russian MP and former military commander Andrei Gurulyov, Popov—appearing to be addressing his troops—said he had "raised a number of other problems" to the top of Russia's military command, and was dismissed by then-Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu.

"The senior chiefs apparently sensed some kind of danger from me," Popov said.

I am not sure those are considered a negative factor anymore.  In fact those just might be the folks they want now....

Here's another scenario... EW is up to 11 and no UAS are in the area at all.  Ukraine has no idea the column is on the march, so neither FPVs or artillery respond to it.  Artillery has no more advantage than UAS in this scenario.

Another scenario is the EW is cranked back to 8.  Ukraine can use slightly better UAS with longer range cameras, but not FPVs in close.  They spot the column and dial in artillery.  A few dozen shells are fired and maybe, just maybe, they hit something enough that it stops moving, then another dozen expended to maybe kill whatever is disabled.

The point here is that you don't want to rely upon artillery to stop a moving column, not to mention ensuring its destruction.  It takes too many shells to ensure good results.  But artillery working with FPVs?  Much better outcome.

    Steve

How about delivering an artillery fired minefield in front of the column?

While I'm no fan of Trump, I think he will actually end this war if he gets elected. And I think he probably will be.

It won't be a happy peace though. Just like with Afghanistan, the US pullout will leave behind a complete mess. But Trump can at least say it's not a mess paid for by US taxpayers. And I think that carries quite a lot of political weight at the moment, both in side the USA and internationally in a time when many people are losing faith in the US as a guardian of the whole western "rules based order".

In both Ukraine and the US, a stab-in-the-back story will then emerge, claiming that the war could have been won if it had not been for perfidious Trump suddenly dropping the ball. Whether that is true or not will be a subject for historians for decades.

European countries will not protest much, and will quickly change their official narrative to align with the new US position. They will however continue to invest much more in their militaries and slowly drift out of the US orbit. Americans will finally achieve their wish of having Europe pay for our own security, but it will come at the cost of a lot of the American political influence over us.

Both America and Russia will come out of the war worse than before. The US will have lost a lot of political/cultural/moral authority, whereas Russia will be more physically and economically weakened and isolated.

Ignoring Trump for the moment as I personally don't think that he is the determining factor.  The war will not end regardless of the US.  This is Ukraine's decision and EU support will continue.  Not sure why you assume the EU will just follow the US on this.  What could happen is a drop in US support levels but there are many in the GOP who want to continue support for Ukraine to the point they helped force the vote in the house despite Trump.  It is worth watching the response to MGT's motion to vacate on C-Span.  She got booed from both sides of the aisle for what was essentially her reaction to Ukraine aid passing.

Russia has made clear what it wants from this war and those demands are not ones Ukraine can or will concede to.  If there is a push you can be sure that references to Munich "peace in our lifetime" will be blasted everywhere.

Well if the pattern is consistent we should get a troll through here in the next week or so, shedding wolf's tears about the "inhumanity of this terrible war" and how we need to stop it now.  Of course the way to stop it is to cut off funding to Ukraine and force them to the negotiation table.  To which we will ask - just like last time - "What f@cking table?!"

If my recollection is correct, didn't the guillotine have a plank kind of table to lie on?

yeah I think this is the "negotiating" table.

This is a very good indicator of how difficult it is for Russia to find volunteers.  They would never offer such large amounts of money if it wasn't necessary.

Interesting to hear this from an influential conservative radio show guy.  However, the comments back at him show (yet again) that the MAGA faithful can not be swayed by reasoned arguments, even from people that are generally on the same page in terms of how government should/shouldn't work.

but if you are indeed correct in that we really are not physically or psychologically evolving fast enough, then a social evolution on this scale may simply be doomed.

In fact one could say that large scale human civilization is in itself a large scale experiment of only around 7000 short years.  It may also be doomed, we just do not know it yet.  Or conversely, perhaps humans need a burst of artificial evolution (eg AI) to allow these larger social constructs to work.

you guys are just a fountain of good vibes today!  Freakin glad I am already retired, and my life expectancy is such that I may be long dead before humanity implodes.

Even though I’m not Navy, if I remember correctly, on a modern Navy ship, the missiles are used against other ships and air threats while the “main gun” is usually radar controlled and rapid fire to be used against small, fast, agile boats (can you say Iranian gunboats). I don’t believe we use “shore bombardments” any more. We use air strikes, which are more accurate. Forget about all the movies showing shore bombardments from 70 to 90 years ago.

whoa!  40 years!  Don't make em go by faster than they already do!  😝

China's Quiet Push Into Russia's Far East Puts Putin in a Pickle (msn.com)

Though Beijing and Moscow have touted their "unlimited partnership" on the global stage, a far-eastern corner of Russia has caught China's eye.

The border region of Primorsky Krai has seen a surge of Chinese farmers, and their growing economic clout is outcompeting locals, reported Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper.

The region, ceded to Russia by the Qing dynasty in 1860, has become a subject of interest for policymakers in Beijing and Chinese nationalists. Last year, the government decreed the country's maps should include Haishenwai—the Chinese name for Vladivostok, the administrative center of Primorsky Krai—and the Chinese names of seven other far-eastern Russian locations.

Like Russian President Vladimir Putin, who claims Ukraine has always been part of the Russian nation, Chinese Leader Xi Jinping has held the restoration of perceived lost territory high on his agenda for the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
China has pledged to someday bring self-governed Taiwan into the fold. It has also claimed most of the South China Sea, where Beijing's "historical rights" pit it against the Philippines and other neighbors.

Amid a gloomy economic outlook for Hegang, a former coal boomtown in China's northeast, more Chinese farmers may soon make their way to Russia, Nikkei reported.

"The concern for 'Yellow Peril' in the Russian Far East is not new. It has existed for decades, if not centuries, due to the vast imbalance of population on the two sides of the border," Yun Sun, the director of the Stimson Center's China Program, told Newsweek.

She added: "The concern is the inflow of Chinese people will challenge the Russia control. I don't think the sovereignty issue is still up for negotiation, but how to manage the Chinese farmers on the ground will be a thorny issue."

A 2021 study published in The American Journal of Economics and Sociology found that in some cases, the presence of Chinese farms and sales to Chinese-owned businesses boosted local farmers' incomes.

considering the disparity in resources, i wonder how the price war is affecting Russia's ability to purchase munitions.  China for one has got to wonder about

    1. Sanctions if selling to Russia.

    2. The more lucrative possibilities of selling to the west.

    - assuming China is an actual resource for selling munitions.

What has Hunter Biden to do with russian tanks in Ukraine?

Putin's invasion plans were formulated on Hunter Biden's laptop.  They were created while he and George Soros were vacationing at Jeffery Epstein's place at the same time that Hilary Clinton was discussing a marketing plan with Epstein to use a Pizza place as a front for child trafficking.  I seem to remember this was close to the same time Jewish Space lasers were lighting up California forests because we hadn't properly raked them like they do in Finland.  I remember all this because right about then I was sticking light bulbs up my anus to kill Covid.

See it all makes sense now right?
