  1. Well, if you look at Ian's zoomed-in images you can, with alot of study, make out some of the features of the Stuart directly behind the US trooper on the left...specifically, you can see the horizontal weld-seam, immediately below the white identification star on the tank's glacis plate, extending out to the right of the left-hand trooper's shoulder.

But hard to imagine that this translates into a positive visual ID of the tank by the ammo-bearing ATG team...yikes...and this is all in shadow as seen in image #2, making the positive ID all that much more difficult...

  2. Imagine a tank platoon moving into an ambush without spotting the enemy units lying in wait, while that enemy might be spotted by a friendly unit not in the same C2 link... they would have to keep driving on their original orders (whatever is set for them or planned) until they become aware of the enemy.

Yes, that would be an amazing thing to simulate.

Reminds me of the Band of Brothers episode during Market Garden ("Replacements"?) when Easy Coy identifies the Tiger(Jagdpanther?) lying in ambush next to a farmhouse and sends a runner back to the approaching British armored column to alert them. The lead tank commander, not seeing the German tank, replies with something like "Well, boy -- I can't fire on him if I can't bloody well see him, now can I??!!" As I'm sure you remember, he continues to blunder forward, sees the tank too late, and quickly burns.

Talk about two friendly units in the same C2 link!!

  3. Outstanding experiment, MOS -- alot of information to digest here. And I'm with Lt. Bull in admitting that I'm learning alot about C2 when studying this thread!

And Bil: I suspect that adopting your suggested mode of play would be a fantastic watch for us AAR-viewers AND a brutal exercise in discipline for the actual players. Yes, Ian -- some kind of pre-determined force plan would need to be recorded and adhered to until the proper information is gathered through the proper C2 pathways. Yes, games played this way would unfold at a considerably slower -- and I suspect much more suspenseful -- pace.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit how carefully I've roamed the virtual battlefield in previous games, searching for the spot where those invisible mortars are most likely to be firing at me...I'm glad to know I'm not the only one doing this!!

And MOS: I assume you're conducting your experiment in Iron mode?

    Great stuff everyone...

  4. Oh right...thanks Holien for reminding me that I forgot to state the engine I'm using.

I have not upgraded to the Version 3 engine (the one that is featured in Red Thunder), but have upgraded to the level just below that...whatever version number that is.

I have seen the threads discussing major issues with older campaigns (such as this one) when loaded up in the newest engine -- which is another reason why I was a bit perplexed when I saw the above issues while playing in an older engine version.

I'm hoping campaign author Field Marshal Blucher can weigh in on this thread...hello?

  5. I know this is a bit of a necro-thread, but I fired up this Campaign recently in v2.11 and have been really enjoying it...and now I have a question for the Field Marshal about its design.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS (for those handful of forum-ites that haven't yet played this campaign...!) ***

I made the early decision to split my forces between the forest road and the town of Brouains. The forest road scenario was a brutal slog -- successful in the end, but with many casualties. Clearing those

I am now moving on to the Brouains scenario, happy in the knowledge that I'm getting a new PzGren Company to work with. I am assuming that this scenario is designed to be taking place more or less simultaneously with the forest road scenario, so there should be no overlap of units.

However, when I load the scenario, my "recon element" is composed of the two SdKfz 251/7 HTs and what must be the tattered remnants of the Pioneer team I commanded in the previous scenario. Why are these units showing up in this scenario? Am I wrong in my assumption about getting new units for this scenario -- or at least getting a portion of the units I had in the first scenario featuring the assault on the Factory and Dairy?

I'd be grateful for any info you can give on this...I'm perplexed...

  6. I have two battalion + scenarios in production for parts of this map

    1. In the southern sector, the assault by elements of SS-PzGr-Regt 19 on 9th Cameronians in Grainville on 29 June

    2. Between le Haut Salbey and le Haut Bosq, the advance by 8th Royal Scots towards le Haut Salbey via Chateau Bellaval, and the subsequent counter-attack by elements SS-PzGr-Regt 19 and 20 on 29 June.

Is there anyone who would like to play test these? If so PM me.

I am also planning to create a German campaign for the Hohenstaufen attack on the western flank of the Scottish corridor on the 29 June based on these scenarios and scenarios following on from them

Emphasis added...I salivate profusely at the thought of a Hohenstaufen campaign...don't disappoint, kensal...I would grab that in a heartbeat!! Thanks for all this great work you're doing...and will be doing... :)

  7. Maybe one day we'll get a proper inventory system rather than the half-assed, bolted-on, afterthought kludge we're stuck with right now. I know inventory management isn't what the game is supposed to be about, but I think there's room for something rather more complete and complex in this niche of detail-obsessed geekery.

    Ouch...that's a bit harsh, don't you think?

Yes, you acknowledge the "geekery" niche in which you seek greater realism, but...ouch. I think it's pretty darn amazing as it is now.

  8. As the "PM" that JoMc67 refers to...

Truth be told, I personally prefer Bil's more analytical approach to putting together an AAR. That's just my own style. But I saw that you were going with a more narrative-based form of storytelling with your own AAR, so I went with it and made some suggestions for how I thought you could improve it. I think you've done a really great job of it, and am really enjoying the story -- and the battle -- as it unfolds. Well done!!

JoMc67 -- it was clear that Bud was going for a comic-style narrative from the beginning, and we here on the forum have been giving him some suggestions on how to improve on that style. Different strokes, y'know?

  9. GREAT job, Bud!! Very cool idea and well executed. A few observations:

It has been a little difficult (at least for me) to visualize what's going at a higher level by just seeing the level 1-2 screenshots, but I'm getting more familiar with the lay of the land as you extend the CAAR. The "sitrep" map in your last graphical post was very helpful in putting everything together...don't be shy about using these liberally as Bil does in his reports (and Bil -- don't even THINK about retiring from your AAR duties!)

Story element -- the comic format certainly creates more of a narrative environment, which is kinda cool. To really breathe some life into these little p-truppen, you might want to create more of a personal backdrop to selected troops, in addition to Lt. Warner. Pnzrldr's approach is great in this regard...you really start associating with the individuals as time goes by and you feel it when they triumph -- or die trying.

    Keep up the great work!!!

  10. OK, Bil...many thanks for the summary. I went back to an earlier post (#702) and found a description of your assault plan...guess I should have checked that earlier... :(

So I see you have decided to commit the platoon at the lower-right corner of the above image, your original group #4, that was intended to be a reserve force for the assault...without the BMP, I assume? Has this vehicle disengaged to assist in the river clearing operation?

(I know, I can always wait for the next post, but I'm impatient!)

  11. Bil -- I'm really interested to see how you conduct your assault on the Power Plant. In the picture from your Nineteenth minute post, it looks like a few of your teams (one in each of the three groups) are panicked or similarly reduced in effectiveness. Am I reading that correctly? How much defensive fire are you receiving from the Plant compound itself? How have you set up your suppressing fire? It looks like the group of teams in the lower-right corner of the Plant are going in without such accompanying fire.
