  1. With regards to the assault guns, each AIB had a 3 vehicle platoon as part of the battalion HQ. In September 1944, the offical makeup of this platoon changed from the M8 Scott to the M4/105. So unless a tank battalion would part with its assault gun platoon, the M8 and M4/105 is an either/or proposition.

I'm also not sure how many 40mm AA guns were towed into battle, but the number of 40mm guns and M16 AA tracks were equal in each autoweapons platoon in the attached AAA groups.

  2. I'm reading an account of the German armor/infantry attack on the town of Kommerscheidt. The author details how the American infantrymen were powerless against the German Pz IVs and Vs. The AT mines were easily avoided, the bazooka rounds bounced off, and the rifle grenades were "worse than useless." I would bet that they weren't dedicated AT grenades, though.

Maybe you should go rob a bank. If you get away with it you will have a nice bag of cash. If not you will have a bunch of new convict friends who will enjoy your high-pitched titter while passing you about for your cell-block style exams. </font>

I'm not how sure the rarity values go? I think 150% is the highest I've ever seen. And yes, the higher the rarity value, the fewer units of that type present in that theater at that time.
  5. Yes, I was indeed very foolish in my skepticism. When the Marines overran the airstrip, they captured one 13mm MG, one 25mm cannon (triple mount), and twelve 75mm flak guns on naval mounts in a traingular setup, 4500 yards to a side. Three inch gun might be the same as the 75mm, considering the navality (new word) of the pieces. I'm guessing that there would have indeed been other emplacements around the islands, but they would have been these types of weapons.

  6. I'm very skeptical about the flak guns you mention. None of the aforementioned units would have necessarily packed along AA guns, and flak, if present, was not much of an issue among the attacking planes. I'm guessing the two Rufes the YAG maintained were the main air defence.

I would say dedicated flak guns would not have showed up until the 38th, 45th, and 1st Battery of the 47th AA Battalions showed up as part of the 35th Brigade's support units.

There were a few coast guns on the island, but I'm not sure that they were ever used. They were big (120-170mm), but they were old, and I have no clue when they were brought ashore.
