  1. It's not a bad idea LLF, but the trouble is, the Road may be skylined or otherwise inderdicted by known enemy assets, so how do you "turn it off" if you don't want your tank/truck/platoon to use it ?

    I'd much rather see more intelligent AI where it simply slows down if about to run into a vehicle ahead ( rather than CMx1's Stop/Reverse/Go again method which tended to exacerbate the problem - ie. if one vehicle caught up to the vehicle in front, pretty much every other vehicle behind them using that road was screwed for the rest of that turn - at least )

  2. If we decide to do RoW VI, then, as stated before on the CMx1 forum, we will give preference as follows:

    -- Multiple previous RoW entrants first;

    -- Obviously previous winners will fall in above category, even if they won/played only a singe tourney;

    -- Single RoW entrants;

    -- having played and finished other tourneys on this + other boards;

    -- eager participants that will probably have to write something why we should take you in.

    This sounds very worthwhile, I'd like to be considered.

    There's not a lot I can say to justify my inclusion except :

    a) I can do bribes - probably in mead :)

    B) Someone has to be the loser. I can do that ;)

  3. Bringing to mind, could you make a few suggestions out of our locally available selection?

    South Africa is a complete unknown to me as winemaking goes.

    http://www.alko.fi/tuotehaku

    Selecting "Punaviinit" (red wines), Etelä-Afrikka (South Africa) and then "Hae" from below.

    Quite a few to choose from and I've pretty much only managed to figure out I'm more into Cabernet Sauvignon than Merlot. :/

    Going ever so slightly off-topic...

    Of the list, I'd say the KWV, Zonnebloem, Nederberg, Simonsig, Vergelegen, Rust en Vrede and Allesverloren are reliable names. I don't know all the names on the list as there's a few new ones and I've been out of SA for some years now.

    The KWV Pinotage is a personal favourite ( if you ever get the chance, the Middelvlei Pinotage is probably the best Pinotage I ever tasted )

    Nederberg cater for mass market and are very successful at keeping their wines tasting the same, year after year ( no mean feat ), so are reliable for someone new to SA wines without being the best.

    I'm sure WineCape can give you more info :)

  4. I'll see if I have enough private stock left for a RoW tourney, after selling the business/property in 2007. I have been raiding my own stock extensively for past 4 years. Might as well see if there are more drinkers abound to share in loot ... ;)

    Ahem, if there's good SA wine going, I'm there ( did my Wine Tasting diploma through Cape Wine Academy back in the day :) ).

    Favourite is still Buitenverwachting...

    @NormalDude - the trouble with South African red is that ( at least this is true for the UK ) the really good stuff seems to stay in SA - apart from a couple of specialist shops I've found ( the one in Kingston-on-Thames is very good ), the supermarkets particularly seem to import the most awful co-op and brands-you-never-heard-of rubbish. If you're lucky they have one bottle of decent stuff for an exorbitant sum. But feel free to Pm me and I'll give you some names to look out for. Or WineCape will :)

  5. No I mean it "looks" artificial, could use a bit of downward motion blur on the textre, and be a lot more indistinct. For example: http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs4/i/2004/238/0/7/Rain.jpg Unless you have a ludicrously high shutter speed the rain will appear blurred. At the moment it has the rough shape of blurred rain (so that it's a streak) but it has real "blurring", it's like a solid rod of ice falling from the sky, I'd be worried about being impaled :D

    I'd guess that it probably looks perfectly fine when in motion, but a still screenshot gives rise to a "look" that your eyes are never going to see.

    The same issue arose in the IL2 Cliffs of Dover forum with Development shots of planes on fire - people moaned about the look of the fire without taking into account the still nature of the screenshot which necessarily robs the pic of all the coding goodness that makes flames look real.

  6. Re CMBN , i believe (IMO) many of the initial problems with the release of CMSF were much to do with the new CMx2 game engine that now , after several patches an modules works like a dream. CMBN is based on this same CMx2 game engine, many of the problems that plagued the CMSF initial release were ironed out. Would expect a much better standard of software upon the release of CMBN.

    Exactly - and IL2 Cliffs of Dover is a new engine, so issues are inevitable ( not helped by Ubisoft's meddling with the imposition of the epilepsy filter, work on which probably took valuable time away from pre-release optimisation ).

  7. I think your view of just how fast and agile most WWII-era armored cars could move off-road, and how quickly they could change speed and direction, may be a bit optimistic.

    To use the M8 Greyhound as an example, top road speed may have been about 55mph, but speed cross country was certainly far less than that; the M8 actually didn't have a great reputation for off-road handling. And with with a 110hp engine, it didn't exactly jump off the line, either. (For comparison, an M4 Sherman actually has a better hp/wt ratio than an M8)

    Now, surely the M8's speed and smaller size would have at least some effect on its chances of getting hit. But in most situations I think this effect would be relatively small. And it's also much more vulnerable; in many cases, even shrapnel from a near miss or MG fire can knock it out. At long ranges and if the AC has a good long stretch of road on which to build up speed, I can see it the speed/size/agility attributes being a more significant factor. But this would be a fairly rare situation, especially in Normandy.

    Now, the fact that CMx2 allows us to dismount the AC crew and recon on foot should make them more useful -- race forward, get the vehicle in defilade, and send the crew on foot to peek over the rise...

    Fair enough, thanks for that info - point being, I didn't know what their speeds were, just that most AC descriptions said "using their speed for protection" and I've never seen one ... get away with it ;)

  8. It seems the key here is that Bill made better use of the woods and spent more resources scouting to determine where best position his forces. I'm impressed that CM2 has put recon into its proper and important role in warfare. Most games don't have an adequate system to do this. I can see now that light recon vehicles will be much more useful in CM2 then they used to be CM1. Bill might come out even better with some armored cars out in front.

    I was just commenting to a CMx1 opponent that I felt Armoured Cars have always gotten the short stick in most wargames as their speed doesn't seem to affect AT guns and other tanks enough - usually they are killed in short order.

    Does the speed of the target in CM:BN have a major effect on accuracy of the shooter ? ie. will a madly zigzagging AC have a good chance to cross some open terrain covered by AT assets ? Or is this just wishful thinking and AT gunners have had skeet shooting training ?

    PS: What happened to the lock and thread part 2 ?

  9. ... In Normandy there were no South Africans or Indians correct? Where did they serve? I thought the South Africans, Indians and Australians only served in North Africa? ...

    There were definitely South Africans in Italy ( don't think Normandy ) as one of my Great-Uncles was killed in Italy.

  10. Heh! I just looked it up. Hilarious! One case of mistaken identity but otherwise a warm, if crazed, welcome. But pretty daunting for a forum newbie not used to what passes for sanity around here.

    One thing though:

    On this forum?! Highly unlikely story. Phah! Going around claiming innocence like that is highly suspicious. What are you hiding? You just made it on the BFC Watch List, mister! ;)

    "Don't worry officer, I'll tell you everything ... I know nothing !" ;)

    Yeah, I looked it up the other day too just for laughs :)

  11. Could be, but then this ratio was the same even before Peng. If anything, I find some of the regular threads (and users) scarier then the Peng threads ;)

    Hmm, I recall when I first joined this forum, an innocent post sort of agreeing with another post had me immediately misidentified as a re-register of some nutter who'd been banned.

    For a while there it looked like hot irons would be applied to my feet etc. So I can kinda agree with Moon's comment. It can be a bit ... insular here ;)

  12. Well gents, it all sounds extremely interesting - I was one of those absolutely gutted when CMC was forced to throw in the towel.

    If a group is getting something along these lines together when CM:BN is up and running, I would like to be borne in mind ( I would even volunteer to assist in some way as I'm a micro-manager at heart - but so long as that wouldn't preclude me from actually playing :D )

  13. Baneman!

    ...

    I will fight you in CM:BN! I will smash you!!

    Dibs on Panthers in our first battle. (blows loud, wet, rasberry)

    To quote River in Firefly - "I'm hearing a lot of talk there genius - show me what you got !"

    Dibs on Panthers eh ? So much for you liking being the Russian underdog in CMBB.

    Alright, bring your Panther - I'm gonna have ... Tube Guy(s) !!

    :) :)

  14. Awesome, thanks for posting all those.

    I've always liked the Colt Army for that amazing fluting. My father is also heavily into guns - he started out making rifle stocks as he was good with wood and ended up qualifying as a gunsmith. Unfortunately he only had one replica black powder revolver ( Colt Navy copy ) as well as a flintlock pistol he bought on holiday in Spain.

    I miss plinking with them, but now I live in the UK, it aint possible :(
