  1. Yeah, I'm thinking about suicide rushing the enemy lines with the halftracks when I'm done. Would that gamey it up enough so it wouldn't be historical? I'll also have 10 naval artillery spotters ready to nail anyone who pops up to shoot the halftracks, clearing the way for a skirmish line of bazookas, then engineers, Sherman Easy Eights, and Greyhounds. Too bad in CMAK I can't have Super Pershings or nearly as many SMGs.

  3. I wonder what that actress says when the take is over. "What the hell, why'd you grab my breast?!", or something like that. Or how often are "accidental" things like that ordered in by the director? If there are cutscenes in CMX2, I will expect boobs to be grabbed. Actually, I will expect every role in the cutscenes to be played by those who made the game and perhaps leading scenario designers, so that will be pretty weird.

  4. I'm looking at the yellow lines that are coming out of the head of whoever's being whipped. If it's blood, it means that somebody at BFC (not Steve; I believe he's the one on the left) bleeds yellow, which clearly makes them an alien. I don't really know what else could cause the little lines... an explosion? Is this an explosive-tipped whip?

And about disembarking, I know that it is unrealistic to have it be super easy, but for an idiot like me who's lucky to find his own ass with both hands, it is pretty irritating. It's gotten to the point where I just don't move anyone on vehicles anymore. If troops come in halftracks, I unload them well away from battle so I don't have to worry about disembarking under any sort of pressure, and basically I assume that any gun I place won't move. Some times I move one and it's a happy surprise, but mostly they stay put. But that's also partially because of the slow movement and the monster unlimber times. Oh, well.

  6. I think PLM hit the nail on the head. We can give units detailed orders in so many ways - except when it comes to embarking/disembarking. There, we're fumbling in the dark.

And Michael, after that whole "CM's next setting" thing, with 1939 East Front vs. Korea '06, I've started assuming that pretty much any blanket statement I post does not apply to you. I'm glad to disagree with you, and I respect your opinion and believe you make good points. I happily disagree with you and I hope that our disagreement makes us both better people. It just seems like we do that a lot.

  8. The reason that everyone responds so harshly to the difficulty of transporting stuff and people is that we, as the player, have this god-like power over so much of the battlefield and our troops, and it kind of ruffles our feathers to not have that kind of control over small facets of the game. So whether or not it is easier or harder than in real life, it is irritating that embarking/disembarking, convoys, etc. are more difficult that other things in game. In essence, when everything else is so easy, it is annoying that this is so hard. Are were spolied brats? Hell yes! Do we want to be more spoiled? You betcha!

  10. There was the shoulder hit on Leia on Endor, followed by the famous boob grab. Han goes down to help Leia, and as he adjusts her into the corner, he clearly grabs her left breast. Watch it, it's there.

The thing you have to remember about Stormtroopers is not just their own inaccuracy, but their incompetent commanders. Both in the original three and in the prequels, whoever is commanding the forces involved is clearly a nitwit. Probably the best example of this is found in Episodes 2 and 3. If memory serves, in Episode 2, they mention that something like 2 million clone troops are made. This seems like a lot, until you remember that the US at its largest in WWII peaked at more than that, and the Old Republic had to fight a war across the entire galaxy. And they make no efforts to conserve their limited manpower. Watch any of the battle scenes in Episode 3. Frontal suicide charges by the clones, or single line of defense fixed MLR defense against a suicide charge. Fools are clearly the ones in command here.

Now, I mention this to point out that the ineffectiveness of Stormtroopers is not entirely their own fault. And, if you read the books and look into the backstory (god, I'm a nerd), you'll here of many instances of frightening effectiveness by the Stormtroopers. It was merely "Hollywoodized" for the movies, as often happens when Hollywood tries to make a big motion picture out of something. Alas, few take the time and effort to uncover the truth about how the wars before, during, and after the Galatic Rebellion were fought.

I'm just going to stop now and maybe preserve some shred of dignity.

  11. Man, there was only one cartoon (besides G.I. Joe and Pinky and the Brain) worth watching. Thunder, Thunder, Thunder Cats! Hooooooo!

But perhaps that was a little late for y'all. Still, Johnny Quest was the absolute truth, until the new generation. Picked that up on DVD recently, proceeded to want to be Race Bannon.

Here in Seattle we have a free weekly newspaper called The Stranger. I'd like to quote a bit of their review of "March of the Penguins":

"I have never liked penguins, and now that I've watched the documentary March of the Penguins I like them even less. To begin with, the creatures have ugly feet, and their awkward walk makes them look like sitting ducks. I'm surprised the penguin is not, like the dodo, extinct. Their reproductive process, which is the focus of this documentary, is abnormally long and harsh. Pleasure will not be found in the sex life of a penguin; the dumb bird spends the better part of a frozen year producing, caring for, and raising its young. In the middle of winter—when the black temperatures have no memory of zero degree, of warmth, of the sun itself—the penguin does everything it can to protect the little life in the egg tucked between its feet and bottom. And what is the purpose of this struggle to survive? To make yet another dumb penguin. "

  12. I agree with everyone who says that disembarking / embarking is a pain in the butt. Far too often have I ordered "troops get off, vehicle pause 30 sec, then drive away", and my boys think "It's gonna move! Stay on!" and then they are way far away. Usually what ends up happening takes three turns. 1st turn: Vehicle drives to spot, waits for end of turn. 2nd turn: Troops get off. 3rd turn: Vehicle drives off.

    It is mighty irritating.

  14. What is "Forgotten Hope", and from whence were these pictures found? Sirocco asks a good question, and I second his asking. I think that simovitch is right and this may have been an under-the-radar bone. Certainly it says to me that AFVs will be involved.

  16. I'd like to be able to see the map when purchasing. Lots of times I'd buy a bunch of ATGs or something and realize I had no where to put them, or I'd see the map and instantly know "I should have more artillery". While you might not want to encourage that kind of cherry-picking for QBs, I think it would still be handy to have.

If I had to choose between formations and a bunch of new commands that make stuff easier, I would choose new commands: "follow" (for convoys), perhaps some kind of "semi-dig-in", for when one is advancing but wants their troops to stay in one place for a while and just find extra-good cover, firing spots, maybe move a little crap around, whatever.

Another cool thing would be to select a unit, click a button, and everywhere on the map in that units LOS would be highlighted. No more toying with the LOS tool, seeing just how much of the forest could they see, just boom and you've got it. Major help for HQs commanding on-board mortars.

And Steve, those unit animations sounded great! It is pretty unreasonable to expect to do a regimental or larger action with whate you're giving us. So, it seems that the average CMX2 battle will be on a smaller scale than the average CMX1 battle. I've got no beef with that, but it's an interesting shift, and one that perhaps limits the settings for at least initial release.
