  1. And MikeyD, I think that game would be pretty awesome. In fact, they should make a CMX2 module for it. CMGL: CM Gang Land. First you get "New York, New York" with, you guessed it, New York, and then "West Coast", so you can have LA gangs, and then CMGL: World Tour, with the Triads and Yakuza, and CMGL: Ole! with South American and Mexican drug dealers (which would also include the Miami tileset). I see potential. I see... greatness.

  2. Also, when your infantry act like the biggest badasses of all time. That is cooler than big tanks as well. It's like "Oh, you brought your platoon of Panthers to the party, looking to dance. Too bad that my bazooka teams DESTROYED you!" Or when ever my engineer teams close assault a tank, I stand up and start trash-talking the computer, just because my engineers are the biggest pimps ever. And lastly, anything that makes fire. Regular infantry flamethrowers are really cool (and longer ranged in CMAK!) and always make me happy when they actually kill something. But flamethrowers on a tank? Look out! Tank flamethrowers are hands down the funnest thing to play with. Now, if they put a flamethrower on a King Tiger, I would be in heaven. Unstoppable, baby.

  3. Tigers? Panthers? Shermans? All were present in the Mediterrean, and King Tigers failed to make an appearance. But ExplodingMonkey has a good point. While Panthers are the sexiest tanks, there is something about some of those ridiculously big-gunned Soviet tanks (IS-2, ISU-152, etc.) that makes me giggle every time I see on (or gasp and shift in my seat worriedly, because in CMBB I usually played German). But there is one thing, and one thing that can trump tanks. Monster artillery. Naval gun sized stuff. Now, here's what you do. Create a scenario. Give one side 10 of the biggest FOs they have available, and the other side like 4 battalions. Put a big wall of buildings or something between them so the FOs won't get hurt. You'll probably have to move around the battalions to make them fit, but put in as many men in as little space as you can. Play this game with no fog of war, playing as the FO side. Call in a pre-planned strike with everyone on the poor bastards. If you don't cackle maniacally, you have no soul. That is cooler than big tanks.

  4. One of Rose's aides who survived the encounter told an interesting little tale. Apparently in the dim light Rose's party at first thought the Tiger was a Pershing; they knew that there were several in the area. It was only when they were quite close that the driver noticed that the tank they were approaching had two exhausts, and the Pershing only had one. It was only then that they started to take evasive actions. And even so, Rose didn't have to take the route he selected. The group he was with was threatened, and Rose's artillery commander, Colonel Frederic Brown advised Rose to retreat to the rear. Rose pointed out that the Tigers attacking their position seemed to be retreating, and that he would go that way in hopes of linking up with the relief force. Unfortunately, relief force was not wher it was expected and Rose's group got lost. Lesson learned: if in close contact with the enemy at night, don't get lost.

  5. Steve, I honestly wish that the Bulge got a full page in most history textbooks. A few years ago back in high school, I was a teacher's assistant for our Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher. The primary textbook had about three sentences for the Bulge. Of course, I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something like "In December of 1944, Hitler launched his final push against the Allies in Western Europe. His tanks managed to surround a large number of Allied troops, who were cut off without supply or reinforcement for several weeks before an Allied assault broke thorugh. After the Battle of the Bulge, it was clear that Hitler no longer had any chance to win in the West." I think it's kind of too bad that history book writers feel that something like the Bulge can be summed up in three sentences, but that's how it goes. And on the killing of POWS, I think many cases may have been because of rumors. In "The Battle For The Ruhr Pocket", by Leo Kessler, he tells a story about General Maurice Rose of the 3rd Armored Division, who was taken as a POW after being ambushed. Rose was shot by accident by a nervous SS soldier. Rumor got out that he had been executed because Rose was a jew. Apparently, many men of the 3rd Armored decided they would no longer take POWs if they were SS troops after that. Or another example, of an small (company-sized) SS unit that got cut off behind enemy lines. The SS troops found a French hospital, and spent the night there. Rumor got out that the SS men had raped all the nurses, killed the doctors, and burned the place down after their orgy of destruction. When that unit was found, they were killed to the man. It was only realized later that, whoops, that didn't happen. Anyways, I think that nearly all executions of prisoners would be a bottom-up sort of thing. The angry GI whose friend was killed by a sniper probably wouldn't be too concilatory when that sniper was captured. That sort of thing would have happened much more than, say a division commander ordering that POWs weren't really necessary.

  6. Duh! How would you ever expect untermensch like the Soviets to stand and fight? Of course the superiority of the pure-blooded Aryan race shows! This is merely common sense!

Seriously though, people say that there is no built-in race bias, but I am skeptical. Not only do Russian tanks retreat against anything, but Germans seem to have no fear. In a recent game, a Pv IVH stood and fought against THREE IS-2s that were about 200 yards away. I was amazed that he actually killed one and distracted the others so a Panzerschrek could get another before he died. This was an extreme example, but I see that sort of thing a whole lot. I haven't noticed much of a race bias type thing in CMAK yet; of course, I play mostly infantry battles, so I don't see as much tank cower because I don't see many tanks.

  7. Oh, of course I'd lose. I made my challenge with the knowledge that I would get torn to shreds. I just figured that if I was sure to lose, I might as well lose to someone from BFC. And because I know that everyone there is lying about making CMX2 and is just sitting around eating bon-bons, drinking alcohol, and laughing like little girls at us getting in tizzies over CMX2, MadMatt probably wouldn't have much better to do than take down a pompous little new kid like me. Also, I think that I could write a pretty rocking AAR.

  8. "Yo no soy marinero. Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan, soy capitan. Ba, ba, bamba..." Actually, Emrys' idea isn't too bad, except the impoverished college student that I am would have trouble getting from Seattle to Cincinnatti. But if forum members were to pay my airfare...

And Seanachai, do you think me a fool? Do you truely believe I would give you and your pathetic cohorts access to an e-mail address that I use to communicate with my fellow human beings? That I would allow such pathetic slime as you to touch my University Of Washington address or, (gasp) my work e-mail? Ha! I spit on your face and stride away in the proud manner of a victorious Spanish bullfighter. And, if your looking to slowly destroy your body with a non-alcholic beverage, Tab soda (the first diet soda!) tastes, well, not like how you would expect. It really must be had to be believed.

  9. Nobody knows(except BFC and maybe someone else they let in on the secret). Correct me if I'm wrong, but Steve did say it was top 5 on their list of subjects. To be fair, though, with the module system it wouldn't be too long of a wait. Still... WWII ETO fo' life! (Thumps chest, gives peace sign). Speaking of which, we should make some sort of Combat Mission hand sign so we can identify fellow forum members. Like how the Bloods spell "blood" with their hands. Just "CM" would be kind of simple, but I'm sure if we put our heads together we can think of something cool.

  10. I have never played a PBEM before. Since I just recently got CMAK, I figured that I might as well try it out. Yet who would I challenge... It would be a simple matter to just say "I want an opponent" and wait for the "send me a setup" posts. That was too easy for me. I wanted to go for the gusto. Which is why I am asking MadMatt to please send me a setup.

Now, I don't think that anyone at BFC plays with the customers; I've never seen or heard of that sort of thing occuring. But I think an exception should be made in my case, because I asked nicely and made a big deal out of it. And if he says no, I can accuse him and BFC of being racist because of my hispanic-like name and make a big fit. So, MadMatt; whadda ya think? Yes? C'mon, please?

  11. CM:TF? I'm not so sure. After all, whichever side got MadMatt would totally dominate. Think about - not only is he indestructible, he can kill just about anyone with one shot. And can you imagine trying to control JasonC? "Captain Cawley, advance to that copse of trees over there." "But sir, blah blah blah oh too later it doesn't matter now." I can only think of two upshots: Endless ressurections (for some) and sending Seanachai on suicide recon missions. Watching the movie, zoomed down to view level one, replaying over and over that beautiful moment when his little figure falls down and gets a red "Eliminated" tab over it. Actually, maybe that would be a cool game. Wasn't there a CMBO mission like that?

  12. Yeah, but how are they going to find out the thickness of the front fur coat of the Ugg Mk. VII? Or the flight velocity of a Type IIA Rock? And historical accounts? Forget about it! I'm not about to try to recreate an accurate battle map from those little cave drawings. Dinosaurs, on the other hand...

  13. What if they did them in some sort of chronological order? WWII first, then Cold War, then near-future, then SLoD? It would be like crappy, crappy Empire Earth, except good and several games. And, if they wanted to add some lame-o RPG character progression element, they could! As in, your sergeant in WWII is a major in Cold War, and is the name of a mega-space-super-battlecruiser in the future! Wow! It would be like the Sims! I think they pretty much have to do this now, as I think it is the best idea of all time. Ever.

  14. Full Spectrum Warrior with more than eight guys... interesting...

MikeyD makes a good point, and his theory is one that jives with the "Korea '08"-type modules. I personally have never seen a really realistic near-future combat wargame on the CM scale. This means that there might well be a niche to be filled. On the other hand, current and near future Spec Ops is perhaps the only game subject that's been done more than WWII. And by the way, I was aware that the Space Lobsters were of the Doom variety. I didn't say Doom because Space Lobsters of Doom actually sounds cool and I was arguing that it wasn't. Anyways, I've calmed down a little and I actually am starting to think and a near future war sim be a lot of fun. Plus, it would be nice and easy to do research for historical battles because... well, there aren't any!

  15. I had been happily playing CMBO and CMBB for about a year now. I felt no real need for CMAK. After all, it was just $40 for CMBB with Africa and Italy, and that didn't really seem that important to me. I was happy to wait for CMX2. Then I looked at these forums (as I occasionally did before as a lurker) and read the recent developments. I was stunned. CMX2 might not by WWII ETO? I might not get my West Front fix?!?! Anyways, I bought CMAK right quick, to ensure happy non-CMBO West Front playing for a while. It's good, but I was happy with CMBB, and I feel almost cheated. Now, don't get me wrong. I think the whole "module" thing rocks pretty hard, but I think it would be almost... blasphemous for the first module not to be WWII ETO. Call me a bloodthirsty sicko if you will, but I think WWII was one of the most interesting things to happen in a long time. WWII is an almost endlessly deep topic that can be explored incredibly deeply by modders, scenario creators, authors, researchers, and whomever should take an interest. And not only is it a great subject for any game, but BFC has already done a bunch of research on the subject. Let's pretend for a moment they hadn't picked a first subject yet and our thoughts might actually affect their decision. Now, it seems to me that any CM game by definition must be meticulously researched. And wouldn't they already have oodles of information on WWII ETO vehicles, weapons, etc.? There's no need to figure out the exact armor thickness of a Panther VA's side turret because they already did. And wouldn't less research time mean an earlier CMX2? And isn't that what everyone, BFC and customers alike, want? (Assuming, that is, that BFC doesn't derive some sick pleasure from stringing us along and actually isn't making CMX2 and is just making stuff up to get a rise out of us.) Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I see several strong advantages to WWII ETO:

    1. It is perhaps the most awesome and deepest conflict ever to ocurr between humans

    2. It needn't by researched as much, leading to an earlier game

    3. Assuming the CMX2 engine is at least kind of similar to CMX1, we know they would work well together. (Example: it matches the armament used and the forces of the war. Frankly, I really can't see Space Lobsters)

    4. Built-in GUARANTEED market. Everybody loves WWII ETO!

Now, I ask you, what are the drawbacks of WWII ETO. It's been done? What hasn't? I understand BFC wants to do something new, but with the module system they'll get to do all sorts of cool stuff. They can try Space Lobsters after CMX2 is a little more established.

Anyways, I am getting down on my knees and begging for WWII ETO. And I bought CMAK just because I was afraid of Space Lobsters, so my opinion matters more than any one else's. In the Universe. Thank you, and good night.
