"Peace Negotiations" have been used in an attempt stall successful offensives and this could have been the case.

It would be interesting to know what preparations Stalin was doing while offering peace.

  2. If I remember correctly, Hitler had ignored words of caution from his generals in the past and had huge success. Not because he was a genius or the generals were wrong, but because the Allies were incompetent and slow to move. I would also be willing to guess there was a great deal of fear after his success in Poland.

There was a battle in Russia where the Germans were surrounded and they were supplied by the luftwaffe. The size of the army was substantially smaller than that at Stalingrad and the battle took place in the summer, which made supply by air feasible. The notion has been put forth that Hitler believe he could duplicate this success at Stalingrad.

In a sense, I believe Hitler’s early successes were due to his audacity and good use of propaganda compounded by Allied incompetence.

  3. Other than a side/rear shot does the pzIII have any chance against the t34?

In two pbem games they ca't seem to knock out the t34 from the front at any range. I have some success with side shots but once the t34 spots my III, I am toast!

  4. Their initial positions (line astern), I gave all three “Fast Move” keeping the line astern formation with a path to the depression near the objective flag. At the depression, the first tank kept a path straight ahead to flank the stug on his left, The second tank (hq) was given a path around the house with the objective flag then turn right toward the stug. The last tank was given a path to turn right, with gentle turns so as not to spend too much time rotating, this path approached the map edge, then gentle left turns toward the stug. Each path ended approx. 100 yards from the stug, at different angles (0, 45 90).

All of the tanks made it to the depression, no problem. At the break out the stug targeted the HQ (funny how the AI knows which one is Tried again last night and came up with a maneuver that worked, with the three tank s in the HQ), which made it to the objective flag. At this point the AI had to chose which way to rotate and it cost him. The last tank in the line ended up bogging then immobile but still got the shot and took out the stug.

The Germans surrendered and I went to bed.

  5. Started the series last night and ran into this brick wall (102) tried some different methods but no luck. I ran a t34 far left and fast. The stug tracked him and shot at him but did not score a hit so I sent the other to out to engage the stug from the side and they could not hit that stug. The poor decoy ran out of map, took a hit, then died. The hq unit was in the middle, started to reverse, the stug turned and killed the t34 on the right. That left me with just the hq which did not last long.

On another try I rushed the stug and was suprised how close the t34's got to the stug. I imagine the t34's accuracy were way down because they were moving fast, but the stug did not score a hit until the t34 ware 100yds away. They were toast the three of them went down fast.

I have not given up yet.

    Nice Job Jason!

  6. After I was done playing, I reviewed the map and noticed alot of German units in position that were well away from the main battle. I only played the scenario once so I am just curious if these units are moving or are stationary. There was infantry in the wood to the left of the house with the small flag. They did not seem to be able to engage the Russians unless the Russian came directly through the woods. There were also infantry and a gun behind the woods in the back right corner of the map. (These map references are from the aspect of the Russian approach.)

These units, unless they move, would be unable to influence the outcome of the battle.

Great Scenario. It would be better against a human opponent but what is a person to do since I know the battle and that takes a lot of the mystery out of the scenario.

  7. It work qute nicely. By the time the Panthers changed targets the JS-2 was scooting back.

Mind you I did this approx 4-5 turns to occupy the panthers so as to move the troops and armor behind the woods in the center of the map.

I lost 1 JS-2 of the four that were engaging the Panthers and did knock out two of the Panthers.

I stopped this once the Tigers got involved ant there was still another Panther. Plus I did not want to use all of my AP ammo on such low percentage shots. Two hits out of approx 20 is not good IMO. Is That Lucky?

Don't crest the hill with all your tanks at the same time. Stagger them so as to prevent easy targeting. IIRC the Panther and Tiger have slow turrets.

  8. After reading this thread I decided to try this Scenario last night and I loved it.

I lined up four of the JS-2 to the right of the house just behind the crest of the hill.

Using the Shoot and scoot command and target (at the time two panthers were visible) I would crest the hill and occupy the attention of the panthers while the rest of my force advanced to the left behind the woods. I lost one JS-2 here but got two Panthers. I kept this up until another panther appeared and then came the Tigers. By this time the rest of the force was behind the woods and just destroying to infantry there. I lost a SU-122 to a panzerskeik unit.

A panther and tiger tried to come up my right but two of my JS-2 s took them out with flank shots.

Here were two tigers in the field behind the once large building (I took it down with a JS-2 screened behind woods on the right) and a panther in the field to the right.

I tried to move two JS-2 down the road through the wood but one of the Js-2 tried to take on the two tigers and lost. The second JS-2 had a narrow LOS to one of the tigers and took it out.

Once I was in the woods, The Germans had nothing in position to stop me from taking the two large Flags in the center of the map.
