Battles like the one you are sharing are the best, I love it when the outcome is close and every bullet counts, I have one at this very moment where I am having to pull units and save the last of the ammo for what should be a struggle for the main objective to the very end of the game.

I'm out in the country also so high speed is not really a option here either. For me PBEM is really the only way I can play, lucky to sit down for more than a hour or two and play and I really do not know when I am going to fit it in the day but normally just somehow do. So I will pass on trying to set something up. Thanks for the response.

As far as intelligence, most people in this hobby are well above the average Joe Level, but all the knowledge in the world does not create a player that is tactically smart. There is more to it than just applying principals, there is almost a art form to it at times. Someone that is above the rest in this skill normally has many different traits that they excel in that come together as they play or use their talents. You can find that this is a hobby that you can learn for your entire life and still have not learned to master it all.

Your friend is one of these types of people, so

you can learn much from him, but good luck on beating him on the battlefield, even the pretend

    one.

  3. Lets keep to the subject, I did not ask for commentaries of others play, I asked for personnal submittals, At least Walpurgis gave us something to watch, others just want to comment on that. How about telling us about one of your matches or plays. I would love to post a few turns but have no clue how to do it.

  4. Other Means

Thats a Fantastic sniper account. That was a one timer. I have never come close to doing that well with a sniper in the game, And I should know how to use a sniper since that was my real world MOS. I bet the Guy you was playing will never forget that one either.

One Shot - One Kill, Hurrah!!!

  5. I would like you all to tell just one of your most interesting stories about playing CM, I love to see amazing results from good game play, just share your personal favorite moment when things went your way or when you did a great move against a worthy adversary. And I bet some of you have screen shots of them moments also.

For some, maybe this could be a place to tell that sad story of how someone did you in. But do tell, get it off your chest.

I have been playing PBEM for about 6 months now and just love the thrill of moments when you outplay someone that you feel is a good player, so share, please don't be modest tongue.gif

  6. Setting up a good ambush can be a real test at times in cm, Your example is great for two or three tanks at the most, but if your have a chance at having to fight 8 to 12 tanks, then you need to think about firepower more, One gun should die quickly when 6 tanks come rolling down a valley, good angle or not, but if you had 3 AT guns on the map and you didn't set them up all in one ambush location then you are the one at fault, you must decide if you have set up enough units that can kill the most likely threat. Now if you only had that one AT gun, and he has all that armor, you are hurting no matter what you do, but here is one trick.

Set the gun in a location that might be driven past and not spotted, you will need to be off the path of the tanks a couple of 100 meters, place the gun arc very close to the unit and hide the unit, I have the unit even face to the rear, what you are trying to find is a spot where they drive past and then at the beginning of a turn you change orders to fire and hopefully have a couple of rear shots or at least flank shots before his tanks cover the ambush, of course all this is dependent on a map location that might work for this tactic and no enemy units sneaking up on you, sometimes a few infantry units hidden for security might be worth adding in. The best I have achieved doing this has been 2 KIA's and 2 immobilized tanks for one 37mm at gun, not bad being outnumbered 6 to 1 at the time. Good Hunting

  7. [And, btw, what is all this about being outplayed and not outlucked? In short, give me a break. If you are so easily beaten then your problem is not bogged vehicles but rather poor tactics and force selection.

Sure it's crappy to lose a big tank to soft ground or a blown transmission, but that's life. You take that chance when you spend all your points on a tiger. If you were clever enough to have purchased some AT guns, for example, and then knew where to place them you would still be able to kill the other guys stuff and have points to spare for arty or whatever.

Suggesting that CM change because you can't have blazing tank battles with the unstoppable metal beasts that you want is hilarious/QUOTE]

I have to agree with this statement, choosing the correct equipment and learning how to use your tanks in all weather conditions should be rewarded. Learn to deal with the issue as the real soldiers did, they didn't get to turn bog off because its not fun.

I think some of these type of features really add to the game, hope to even see more in the future, I can hear the cries now. Why not put fuel levels in tanks, possible chance of running out of fuel in battle, there better be a switch or many of you will not buy the game. How could they do something like that to a game. I think there isnt one thing in this game someone has not complained about, so no matter what the next game is like, no matter how much better it is, everything will be torn apart and someone will try to point out it could be even better. Can you just learn to enjoy what you have and learn to play it as is instead of always thinking that game must be fixed because it makes you lose.

  8. Nothing wrong when it is part of the design intent, but even then, care should be taken as to how to be jumped, Tanks normally do not reinforce out of nowhere by crashing into woods at 50 meters away magically. The designer needs to think of a map layout so that reinforcements have to work their way into the battle in a logical manor, Hearing tanks beyond woods at 500 meters to the right flank is much more scary and more realistic in that you know your in trouble but the hammer has not hit yet. As I said, its just something to think about when trying to create a good designed scenario.

I personnally love some designed scenario's that drop reinforced infantry on top of the enemy, but that is easy to see, a platoon or two of infantry being able to sneak into position and surprise attach is possible. Armor, well I'm sure someone can find a story, but lets keep it real, not likely.

  9. I like to design scenario's and while playing one

we downloaded from the depot recently, I learned something that I thought I should mention.

This map was 1200x1200 and set up as a meeting engagement, the objective was in the middle of the map, I decided to take the right flank and create problems for the enemy force that would be pushing the middle of the board, knowing that no one would guard this far flank other than with a minimun force, so I setup what I felt was a strong force to take out the planned resistance.

This is where the design thought needs to come into play. It was a 30 turn game. I had pushed up this right flank, was in position to eliminate the one tank the enemy had in the woods on this flank and then on turn 10 he received reinforcements right in this location, 5 tanks and 4 halftracks. I had three tanks, but all were already trained on this location, before the turn even ended he was destroyed in a devistating fashion, losing 4 tanks and 3 halftracks and not really having much of a chance to even return fire. I mopped up the other two next turn, this is the most amazing kill sack I have ever had, but it was created by poor design.

I thought about this and felt this should not have happened in a good design, but I had not thought about it in those that I myself had designed.

I would suggest that if you are into designing, keep in mind the smaller maps are hard to provide a secure location to bring reinforcemnts on, either enlarge the map to allow reinfocements to move on more naturally or keep reinforcements to a minimun in smaller maps were they might drop in on top of the enemy,(which sometimes I know is what is wanted) but as in this example, no designer had intended me to slaughter his reinforcemnts by pushing the non objective area of the map. This could have played the other way also, if I had taken out his tank already, I would likely have been in the woods that the reinforcement came in behind, three easy ass shots for him and I would really be complaining.

Just a post to think about.

  10. Was playing a cmbo pbem and I have two challenger tanks, great tanks, then I thought that name didn't seem correct. Pulled out my books and say to myself, oops, did this tank get named incorrect. This appears to be the Comet that I am playing with, is this correct? or am I smoking something that is giving me new visions.

  11. You have just come over from CC game, it is easy to see these weaknesses mentioned, but You have gotta love the strengths in this game system.

Enjoy GS_Guuderian, let alone can you play with more than 15 units, you have a endless supply of

maps and you do not need to be a computer genius to create one. That makes this better than anything else just because of that.

  12. Well then, lets get some real snipers added into the next version of this game, even if they cost 1000 points, because I am tired of marksman only.

This is a poor excuse for bad modeling, there were more snipers trained for their field than there were marksmen that were given a rifle and asked to play sniper during ww2. Most markmen had the habit of not leaving the protection of their squad either. So the game "sucks" at present because marksman would not be as independent as shown in the game, the game has snipers that cannot shoot. period. Battlefront get it right next time, would you.

  13. I believe this statement From JasonC is very insightful as to how firepower works and how you as a player need to think of it in the terms of the game. I just crushed a opponant today because he had the confidence of holding a village objective and had open ground between me and him in the center section of the map, he learned the hard way that firepower is more important than the terrian he held. He could not stop me from leap froging my squads up the one flank of the village because of proper firepower, placed right out in open terrain.

I could never explain these concepts as JasonC has but I in my own way look at the game battlefield in a similar way. In a sence, he is trying to teach others here how to play better, I guess he isnt getting enough good competition.

Good post and I enjoyed picking out and reading your insights as too platying the game.

  14. This is more a issue of the consumer market and what they are competing against. Steve is not concerned that for some of us Pbem is important. For BF's part, sales will not be hurt to a great level without pbem, it is easy to see that they have already weighed that decision if they don't see a easy solution for designing it into the game. This is much easier to decide since they are somewhat the only game in town. Make all the threats you want, but most of us will buy the game because what other choice do we really have.

Most of the other stuff out there is junk if you are looking for something that creates the sence of protraying reality

  15. John, the example you typed in is perfect, this is what my understanding was as far as match up in armour for the time frame. Now take that with me testing single kvI's against late PZIIIj's (random as to if they have Tungsten) and placing them front to front at 350 meters apart. Viewed about 60 duels and had over a 40% win factor for the PzIIIj's. I know they believe this game has great modeling of armour and penetration, but that sure doesn't seem right to me, is there others who agree or disagree with me on this.
