  1. Does any WW2 history guru know how any of these we are likely to see in the Normandy period?

Well I know the Battlefront team has worked most excellent with this in mind.

However there are shots I believe 2 pictures of a King Tiger (Porsche Turret) that was attached to Panzer Lehr near the St. Lo area. This of course is not enough to halt or alter the package from Battlefront we are about to be delivered. But it would have been rare to see it at best, but it did happen. Most of the big cats were fighting the Canadians and the Brits... god bless them!

  2. Same approach up the middle here. Expended all the 105 arty on the little village pre start barrage, rushed the two infantry platoons up the middle to the edge of the orchard while that was going on. HMGs on the flanks took opportunity fire as the US started getting a little uncomfortable with the fire coming down. Met contact at the far end of the orchard then ordered linear barrage from 81mm. and brought the PSWs up to suppress. By that time, the defenders were pretty well beat down. Assaulted a couple squads at a time into the hedgerow with perimeter security, then pretty much walked into the village. Panthers sat in overwatch, hull down, back on the hill. Lost 3 marders and 3 PSW to the 57mm AT and US TDs. By the time the village was taken and secured, HMGs had nothing to shoot at so sent them over to the crossroad hedgerows to set up. 81mm mortars had expended their rounds so sent them, their HQ and ammo team to the bridge with my remaining PSW dispatched from the village for overwatch.

We must think similarily.. LOL Had the Panthers and Marders in Overwatch as well. Although I kept the Marders back until I really needed the support, then crept them up to bring more Fire superiority at the same time. (I have to admit I did watch the VAAR of this scenerio before and sort of new what was coming) I did lose 1 marder to one of the M10's. My infantry ended up taking the stubborn 57mm AT gun. I did have enough 105mm shells left to give the M10's a nice barrage... never saw the tank, but I figured one was destroyed when I saw flames... I guess one landed inside the tank or on the back decklid. Fun scenerio... I think I will do that one again tonight.

Cheers.. oh and thanks for sharing your perspective Wiggum... pretty freaking awesome!

  3. Hah. That's exactly why I went and got my wife an iPad a few weeks ago. She does most of her real work on the computer during the day and in the evenings when I'm likely to want some game time she just needs something she can surf, email and Facebook on. She actually prefers the iPad for this since she can sit on the couch or the bed or wherever she pleases while using it.

$600 is a small price to pay for marital harmony. :D

[Though I would add, it's a very handy thing to put the .pdf of the CMBN manual on the iPad, for reference while I'm playing without having to shell back out to the desktop. Might have to get myself one of those toys, eventually...]

Yeah no kidding.. I think she was jealous of the computer...LOL Actually she has nothing to be jealous about, but I was happy to accomodate her. :P Although I must say during the summer months and during the week, its difficult to spend the time I want on CMBN, as she hounds me to go places with her... Its hard to say no damn it. :) But on the weekends we have our "Space out Time" she goes shopping while I destroy the crap out of stuff via the wonderfully mastered creation from the Battlefront team!

Damn... thank god she has a good job, or this relationship could get expensive... LOL She is going shopping this weekend with friends.. Yeah!!!

  4. I also found that zooming thru the vehicles you can see an extremly detailed interior... I was like WOW.. had to check out the Shermans for awhile. Also the all the vehicles are just a little randomly different. Even as mentioned before the soldiers can be somewhat different. I zoomed all the way in to look at the fields and noticed different floral arangements, and foilage. In the Tutorial near the crossroads there was some bocage that was almost like a tunnel.... reminded me of the reading I had done about M. Wittmann and the sort of canopy the bocage could sometimes offer the defenders.

  5. you guys are killing me... LOL My Fiancee told me if BF gets in the way she is throwing the CPU out the window... Yesterday I went and bought her, her own computer.. LOL She said this is what she actually wanted and was tired of me taking up her freaking facebook time. LOL Needless to say though... if she gives me the wink... sorry BF... hitting the pause button just like YankeeDog..... Priorities

  6. One of the cool things I found out in CMBN thus far is... nothing is safe! LOL In the tutorial I had to abandoned one of my Shermans near the Manor House due to AT fire and my tracks being blown apart. The crew left and sought cover in the nearby trees. The AT gun shot a couple rounds at the Crew, then turned their attention to the empty sherman... Maybe they did not know it was abandoned but proceded to engage it until it was brewed up... dang... merciless I tell you... LOL I wanted my crew to go back in the tank and use the .50 on the AT gun.. thought I could sneak them back.. Nope! :P

  7. Don't waste your time. I tried it and apparently there's no script for US attack. I surrendered after 10-15 minutes of not even a sound contact and upon map review, saw they weren't going anywhere.

Sorry for the "spoiler", but there'd be more groans from playing as Germans waiting for 45 minutes.

Cool.. thanks for the heads up... Im going to try the other two again.. :) Then spend some time and practice with the editor.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    Cheers!

  8. I love it so far...just love it. Playing the Tutorial... I went really slow but with enough time to make it to the crossroads. The shermans when opened really do some freaking crazy damage vs infantry. Freaking HE Shells blasting, co-ax mg blazing, and the .50cal just ripping stuff up. I finished with 3 shermans still on the field of battle. one of my shermans had inflicted the Pak a vital kill shot, and then proceeded to inflict 33KIA and 5MIA. Not sure how you inflict a MIA but... dang those guys were having a field day. Loads of fun.. Im going to try the German side next time and see if I can defend vs the AI. I have to say the AI is freaking awesome right now. Flanking and cover fire... well done.

  9. Nice.... Good Mission, very fun. I preped up the middle area... to rattle or destroy some most likely positions down the middle, then I used smoke. 1.zug up the middle like you... then 2.zug.. using them in bounding... lots of firepower right down the middle. I did a recon to the right...not a good area. used all PSW with their 20mm and HMG's in overwatch. Total Victory! Cant wait to see the results here.

  10. Thanks "Normal Dude" Awesome map..... just brilliant. I must say the first time I played the Tutorial it was fun as hell. Thanks for making such an authentic map, very enjoyable and I can tell I have much to look forward to in the full game. I cant wait to start making my own designs using google earth, and some other WWII images. Thanks for the motivation! Now I have the weekend off..and I plan to play the Demo over and over!

  11. They won't just spontaneously pick up the weapon, but if you buddy aid the dead and wounded there's a reasonable chance they'll grab the MG while they're applying bandages and injecting morphine.

To use Buddy Aid... do you simply move Alive soldiers over the wounded, or move them next to the wounded to perform buddy aid?

  12. I have a suspicion that everyone here already has a pretty good idea how far a Colt pistol slug will carry and the effective range of the M1 Garand. Its not exactly like we're discussing exotic weaponry or that the game's being bought by morons who never heard of WWII. I agree most people won't bother to Google weapons stats - mostly because they already know the weapons stats.

Although I believe most people buying stuff from Battlefront are not Morons, and are talking about the idiots playing other wargames... that think its history, My question is. what about the new kids on the block? You know the ones that now live in the computer age and never grew up with ASL, Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz...etc That is the generation that believe you can always add more detail... the never happy generation... LOL. Although my fiancee's son loves first person shooters etc, he has become enthralled with everything WWII, since watching me play IL-sturmovik, and the games from Battlefront. Which to me is awesome that there could possibly new MEAT... that we can educate without all the BS... from tv.

Honestly though, I cant see a huge deal in making a pictoral index reference that you can access from the menu as being difficult, but then again Im not a computer engineer either. Today some kids really do not know crap about WWII, nor its weapons.. they only see and believe what they hear on TV. So when you come accross a game like Battlefront Normandy and all the others, its a real pleasure, some people though are just asking for a little more detail. I guess like anything, we will always want more, thats what makes us, and things better the next time... listening to consumers. :) But from reading the posts.. this edit... looks like we will have ranges etc in the UI. :) Again hats off to all the Beta testors and the team from Battlefront.

  13. One thing I'm slightly concerned about is the immense collateral damage to stonewalls when compared to their surroundings. In the middle of the village, he part where no rounds impacted, I saw a LOT of stonewalls that were toppled over by explosions that happened on the other side of a house, at last 50m away.

Well the blast radius from a 105mm which = a 4inch gun is significant. however the main thing is shrapnel radius etc. It is interesting though how just the intense concussion blast alone can do so much damage. If your talking on average of a 75-100m kill zone for Artillery.. I could imagine a 14" bombardment to be pretty lethal to Infantry. WWI was hell for infantry.

  14. For a long time the SS were equipped with captured foreign kit that the Army didn't want despite being desperately short of materiel themselves. That kinda puts the lie to the hostess with the mostess meme.

Proportionately, quite a few of the SS divisions were Pz or PzGren. Like, maybe 33%? Compare that to the army were it was down around 10%. But as far as the Western Allies were concerned, every SS division they encountered in Italy and Normandy and France and BeNeLux and Germany (well, except for 6th SS Mtn, but that was late in the campaign) was either a Pz or PzGren div, which would tend to give a distorted view. The Western Allies didn't come across the hopelessly incompetent muppets like the Florian Geyer, Handschar, or Lützow divisions.

Not sure that really applied to all German Waffen SS division. Clearly the Corp Waffen SS divisions in the early days were nothing more then Regimental size and had to fight with their Heer Comrades to get equipment.. thats why Eicke (3rd SS Totenkopf) had his men steal their equipment from the Heer. I know for a fact that the 7th SS Prinz Eugen used captured French Tanks. But you could say all the divisions wether Waffen SS or Heer used captured equipment as they waited for replacements for those that were destroyed or broke down. Later on the Tip of the spear formations were equiped with the best Germany had to offer, but you could bet that if they needed a transport, krad, or more tanks to replace loses they suffered...

  15. It would be nice to see a number of theaters based on the BN platform. In 'Advanced Squad Leader' terms, there's always the core modules:

    - Beyond Valor

    - Yanks

    - Partisan!

    - West of Alamein

    - For King and Country

    - The Last Hurrah

    - Hollow Legions

    - Code of Bushido

    - Gung Ho!

    - Croix de Guerre

    - Doomed Batalions

    - Armies of Oblivion'

    - Hakkaa Päälle (not yet released)

and then everything else . .

I had all of those... gave them away... Christ! so many little pieces to punch out. I had 2 sets of Yanks and Beyond Valor, did not have the last one of course. I wish I never gave it all away! Classic.
  16. Killing goat herders for being in their OWN country and doing NOTHING apart from being in the way ? Sure. Some kind of Special forces that get themseves compromised by goat herders .....

This discussion clearly shows why it is so hard for the US to win hearts and minds anywhere in the world ..... because it breaks down to OUR boys are allowed to do everything because you know it's war, right ?

The other side however should let themselves get killed easily and can get slaughtered for daring to fire their MGs on OUR boys ....... but some of you guys do know better and that gives the world hope ......

Adapt, improvise and overcome any obstacle to get the mission done. IN my own humble opinion. Its just not the US but any Allied group fighting overseas. Getting tired of the stereotype from countries that are not even in the fight.... which in my eyes have no right to say anything negative, as they do not contribute anything. I think this thread went way off topic and needs to be closed as reading some of these threads is begining to get the blood boiling.

  17. My kids are WAY more mature (and have far better taste than that manufactured boy wonder) than that, jeez.

I come in in March for Hot Lead, one of Canada's best miniatures gaming conventions. That's maturity ... 48 year old men pushing around little metals soldiers.

    :o

LOL nothing wrong with that.. Hell how many British, Prussian, French, and Colonial Generals played with their led figures?

You could say we just have more options now and really cool metal soldiers to play with....we also have the luxury of computers! Thank you Battlefront!

  18. Will there be the "Royal Marine Commandos" as well as the other Commando units like the 1st and 4th Special Service Brigades modeled?

They did take part in the landings of Sword and Gold Beach. they were I beleive at Normandy for around 2 months or more.

Would be cool to have more units available, which would equal more scenerios, or the creation for more flexibilty with the editor.

  19. Seeing as we have at least a week to kill and we already beat to death the subject of allies versus axis capability - time to take on those wunderkind.

Were they really such a big deal or did preferential access to men and material simply waste resources for the Wehrmacht?

Personally I think their elite status is much overblown, yes they were fanatical and yeah they had the best toys of the lot (Aside from GrossDeutschland and a few others) and better access to replacements, but given all the resources thrown their way, my personal (usually flawed) opinion is Germany got less out of the bargain than if they had incorporated those resources into the Wehrmacht.

    Okay flame away.

I dont think that some of the Waffen SS units reputation are overblown. I do think in the begining there were alot of mistakes made due to some leadership factors, however they really became profecient on the Eastern Front, and I am only talking about the Corp Waffen SS Divisions. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Yes indeed they did recieve the best equipment later in the war years... I would recomend reading "Soldiers of Destruction" 3rd SS Totenkopf. Eicke may not have been the best commander, but he loved his men, and they loved him... so much they had to steal most of their heavy equipment. This book is just an example of the fighting spirit of the German soldier. I think however, most Germans fought the same way... wether if they were in the Heer, or Waffen SS.

I dont think they were supermen.. but they were asked to be on line until they were bled white... time and time again. The 1st SS PzrKorps would be asked to be a Fire brigade if you will... over and over, the same with the 2nd SS PzrKorps. To any even basic historian this is pretty obvious.. but they were called upon many times to rearguard while the bulk of the Heer could exit. Many Heer Generals were happy to have their flanks protected by anyone of the Waffen SS Pz.Divisions, and by the end of 1941 the Waffen SS had the respect of many Heer Commanders.

  20. Sorry if someone else already mentioned it, but the SS had their own separate supply network. They were dependent on OKH for most of their armored vehicles, but they enjoyed higher priority than the Heer on heavy equipment .

Very true... You could say the 1st SS was always going to be well stocked as it carried AH's name. However the 2nd, 5th, 3rd and later 9th, 10th and 12th were well stocked, just like Grossdeutschland, Herman Goring, Panzer Lehr, and Brandenburger Pz Divisions had priortiy for the Heer.

One problem the Germans truly had were logisitics... infighting and prioritizing. However the same could be said between the US and UK forces at Normandy.
