  1. For a "peace research" institute they seem to be shooting a lot of (what are hopefully) corpses in the head.
  2. Jokes about round size and "what you do with it" aside, I personally believe that skill can overcome limited round size. Bullets to small? Practice. Doesn't matter if you have a .22 or a 22mm if you hit him in the forehead. Yeah, training troops for headshots is over the top. But for a more realistic example I would imagine putting 3 5.56s (from say, and m-16 burst) into a center mass would drop someone pretty much as well as a single 7.62 to the same area. Removing my tounge from my cheek, I do have a question. Whats the average infantry combat distance these days? I remember reading that in WW2 it was something like 50m. At this distance whoever threw out the most lead would usually win. Hence the assult rifle. Assuming that this is still the case today (a fairly big IF) I would imagine that the ability to carry more rounds (and therefore send more downrange) would be a signifigant advantage over a smaller number of bigger rounds, as the vast majority are going to be misses anyway.
  3. I always told that it wasn't the size of your round, but how you use it that counts.
  4. Of course 1000 is outside the range of a normal small arm, but that works the same in reverse. The enemy sniper was at best using a Druganov, and was proabably well under 500m. The problem was his angle. He was something like 6 stories in the air behind a raised wall around the edge of the building. Firing back at him with small arms was simply not effective. Firing back at him with airburst 40mm rounds would have been. No need for ATGMs or UAVs. Remember, the more specialized the solution the less likely it will be available at the time you need it. Or at least the more time it will take to employ. Having every squad armed with the XM25 means that capability is right there, all the time, every time. And very cheaply too. Javelin is also available to most squads most of the time, but it is horribly expensive and quite limited in terms of number of opportunities to use before running out. UAVs would be even less common and more expensive than XM25, though theoretically cheaper than a Javelin. Point is an inexpensive munition in plenty that does the trick is better than an expensive and limited one. Steve </font>
  5. I remember the senior DS calling us all together to say uday and qusay had been killed. According to him they "put a TOW through each window of the building" Don't know if thats true. Are TOWs considered ATGMs? AFAIK they are not really consider to be in the same class as the more modern stuff.
  6. I'm more of a CMSF man, but wow. Definetly have to check this one out.
  7. Really, I thought old al-Z was more hands on, in addition to being a symbol. I agree that killing these big shots isn't likely to solve any problems, we all know how they love their martyrs.
  8. And all the while everyone cursing the forum grogs who demanded civies. No thank you... [ November 28, 2005, 11:56 AM: Message edited by: Dillweed ]
  9. The cobra is a vietnam era system too. The new longbow apaches? Forget it. FK is right tho, while helicopter can bring exellent troop mobility and really kick ass firepower they are exeedingly vulnerable. Doubly so for MOUT. Just think mougudishu. On a completly unrelated note, one of my DSs in basic was one of the ranger on the ill fated opertaion Gothic Serpant. I had the good fortune of watching some dullard from alabama who did not know his history take a swing at him during week 1.
  10. Well, I'd like to see civillians too. The question is if it worth waiting another 6 to 8 (or more) weeks to code them in. BFC has decided that it is not. Remember every week they spend coding is a week that they do not makes sales.
  11. As a matter of priciple I only take my news in comedy form. And the Daily Show isn't on until tommorrow.
  12. He was mentioned in th Syrian border dispute thread, got me thinking. Anybody heard news about him? Last I had heard they were scraping some goo off a wall in Mosul with the intent of test it for DNA.
  13. as has been stated 10452 times before, civillians will not be included in CMSF, or modules. CMSF simulates combat, not peacekeeping ops. If any civs catch wind of the sort of firepower headed their way, they will most likely stay out of the way. Civillians are a possible for CMBOx2
  14. I heard that it was done weeks ago, but are not putting it up, just to be dicks. What I heard.
  15. I get the feeling that this is really in nobody's best intrest to talk about. I wouldn't be suprised if there is action on the border, tho.
  16. But having a credible backdrop is the only way to make it play credibly. Otherwise BFC has only wasted their time trying to figure the same for an intervention in Syria. </font>
  17. Once again, Combat Mission is not a political/economic simulator. Just because a Western/Soviet war was not bloody likley doesn't mean that there would not be some damn intresting tactical chestnuts to crack at the company/battalion level. I mean, anything this hypothetical is pretty much pissing into the wind. I mean from what I know of history there are just way too many little variables to figure what would have happens if even some little ones (let alone big ones) were different. That being said, however, I understand there were some pretty tense moments near the end of the war. I can imagine a stressed yet invincible feeling COL with extreme political views doing something very foolish as a result. And these things do have a way of spiraling out of control...
  18. I like the part about the thumbs up, cause I can remember reporters describing people running up to the invading forces in 03 and flashing the thumbs up sign.
  19. I would also like to see fewer peng and peng like threads.
  20. Don't think it was actually Grigsby, but some like him. Definetly an operational lvl invation of the north.
  21. I think Grigsby (or one of the other old school bigshots) actually made an operational level game only slightly less absurd than this.
  22. Agreed, but that doesn't prevent it from being intresting, on a tactical level.
