Meanwhile I wondered if the briefing was meant to reflect the orders given at the time
I assume so. And with the multiple off map arty options available you can even arrange a rolling barrage and a smoke screen. Which is why I thought I might give it a go.
But as you've got two hours to achieve the objective it seemed pretty daft to try and get there in 10 minutes and experience told me it was doomed to failure anyway.

Just started this last night but after 4 minutes I'm going to do something I never do - Start again!
The thing is, I read the briefing and it said move fast as you don't want to hang around in a kill zone.
No I don't. In fact I don't even want to enter a kill zone.
I looked at the map. Yep, I know a kill zone when I see one and that is definitely a kill zone.
Now, ordinarily I'd not have gone near the "colossal crack". I'd have gone through one or both villages. But from what the briefing said, I thought that might be cheating (sort of). Certainly not historical. Not playing it as intended. So, in all good faith, I charged up the centre using "Fast". Left a few further back with "Hunt" for targets that revealed themselves (which was actually quite effective).
But 4 minutes later with more than half a dozen Shermans brewing up, I thought, "Why is this a 2-hour scenario?"
If it was important to charge up the middle with a rolling barrage and a smoke screen, surely it'd be a 30-minute scenario?
So I thought, sod the briefing, I'll do this my way.
Now about to start again.

John, I've never been inadvertently (colaterally?) quoted LOL.
I think "sub-quoted" might work.

I believe they will be in the game, just not in the campaign in question?
That's just why I was trying to clarify.

Sorry very slight spoiler but no partisans here.

I think I can see a partisan in the trees.
And yes! It's a woman.

Will there be female partisans?

I'll post something now.
It's a partisan isn't it?

I thought BF decided to change this a little so that troops can see enemy Armor at close range a little better/faster.
I think they should make it automatic in certain circumstances.

I also remember seeing dust kicking up behind trees etc. in CMx1 which was quite cool (and there was no contact icon).
Perhaps that's still in CMx2 but all the CMBN scenarios are too wet.

Noise does not seem to be a factor in CM2 spotting (at least not vehicles).
I thought it was.
I know CMx1 had those weird sound contact generic tanks that used to move around in the wrong place that were sound contacts, but in CMx2 you often get vehicle contacts (that move) that are out of anyone's LOS. I assumed that was because you could hear them.

Look around I noticed there was a huge bull the size of an SUV standing in the same field and I had never noticed!
Were you carrying a PIAT?

I think it only really affects tanks with a cupola though.
Well this was a Stug so no cupola.
But I'm glad someone else has seen it multiple times. I don't think it's even what I'd call "rare".
Might go as far as "uncommon" but that's as far as I'm prepared to go...

In Elite mode friendly units can maintain visual C2 when slightly out LOS of each other, such as separated by a low wall.
Must admit that I'm often surprised by some of my units being in C2 when I can't possibly imagine they really would be.
Noticed one last night apparently being in visual contact at some considerable distance and, more importantly, in a wood!

This aids in the understanding of C2 and how C2, or the lack of it, plays a role in how this unit may react to different situations.
That implies, in theory, that Iron is easier than Elite.
It's all getting a bit Zen.

Like a unit that had a recent spot, a unit with binoculars and LOS to the general area, or a unit that's quite close to the enemy.
Have you ever noticed a situation where an individual unit has more up to date spotting info on an enemy unit than the info you get when you have no-one selected?
I don't think I have (which is why think it's an "optimum" view rather than an "average" view).
All of this reminds why I can't be bothered with "Iron". Just seems to be more inconvenient rather than more difficult. The info is all still there.

but if you want the best estimate of a ? unit, you need the unit with the best LOS selected.
Really? I'll have to check because I've never noticed that.
Best LOS? Or most recent spot?
Isn't LOS a yes/no thing? You do or you don't. What's a "best" LOS?

I think that view is actually not the player's view, but the view of the highest level of local command (regiment?).
3 minutes ago, Freyberg said:Not really - it's sort of the average of all the unit views
Well you say that but any enemy unit that is currently spotted by anyone is visible (not just an icon) when you don't have a unit selected.
So that would imply it's at least the optimal view (rather than an average). You're getting the best of all the available spotting info from all units. As you're seeing different enemy units that are being seen by different units of your side (and who may not be in contact with each other), I'd say that's an omnipotent player's view.

Most of the time it does happen is because I've done 'Hide Smoke' and forgotten about it, or there are shrubs in the way, but 'Trunks Only' makes them nearly invisible.
Definitely no smoke involved.
Think I probably had trunks only for the trees but there weren't any trees in that spot and, most pertinently of all, the Stug managed to see them.

What was the weather and time of day?
No idea but it was daytime and it wasn't raining or foggy.
But I'm not sure what difference even adverse conditions would make because the Stug (a buttoned up Stug that was pointing the wrong way) managed to them (lying down in the long grass) easy enough.

It's been 13 years since CM2 came out so it's probable that all the strange behaviors we see in the game are not easily (or at all) fixable with current engine.
Can't be any harder than having different spotting rules for different skill levels.

We hope for a new and better game engine.
True but if you just wanted tanks to be automatically spotted by non-cowering infantry with a clear LOS if the tank is under a certain distance away, you could just do it in a patch. (He says as if he has a clue what he's talking about )
I like the current engine. Keep adding material. If they do a new one will be back in the bocage (and with all the bugs a new engine brings).

Also the fact that they were armed with a PIAT would lead you to believe they'd have orders to engage any armor that got within range.
Well they probably would if they had spotted it...
Never give the PIAT to the short -sighted guy.

Bought it a couple of weeks ago because it had gone down to about a fiver. But I haven't fired it up yet.
