  1. Wood bunkers and to a lesser degree, concrete bunkers are basically coffins as they don't provide much protection.  Even small arms can penetrate wood bunkers and I incur losses when artillery even lands in the proximity of concrete bunkers.  I expected that concrete bunkers would provide more protection from artillery and tank fire.  I'm not saying that units in a concrete bunkers should be invulnerable, just harder to kill.  I've gone to the tactic of not even bothering to put men in them, not only because of their lack of protection but also because they are a magnet for enemy fire.

Since the introduction of the all-in-one full game installers for all of the Combat Mission games purchases of modules (or Packs) no longer come with downloads. If you have the most up to date patched version of your game then you already have the module (or Pack) installed. Along with Rome to Victory's release is a v2.10 "patch". This patch contains all of the Rome to Victory content. All full game installers are also v2.10 and contain the Rome to Victory content. Make sure that you have the 2.10 game version installed (below is a direct link to the patch) and then use the Activate New Products utility on your desktop and enter your Rome to Victory key to "unlock" the content,

I just want to clarify the procedure for installing update 2.10 since the last time I bought a CM product was December 2018.  My install is Program Files (X86)/Battlefront/Combat Mission Fortress Italy.  I have downloaded update 2.10.

If I understand correctly I should now extract the update to the above.  I would then have to purchase Rome to Victory after which I will receive a key for activation.  Until then the update contains other upgrades for the game so that my current version of 2.02 will still work even if I don't purchase Rome to Victory right away.

The friend I am currently playing a PBEM game went and installed 2.10.  Tonight he sent me his latest move file which I placed in the CMFI  In Folder.  However when I start the game up and click on Saved Games it does not appear so I am not sure what he did.  I don't know if he updated before he made his move or when.  I posted earlier and was told that we should update unless we are in the Orders phase so I am guessing he didn't do that.   Once I find out I will post here if we can't figure it out.

In the meantime, please confirm that what I wrote in the above two paragraphs is correct.  Thanks.

Generally speaking, if you can see something you can shoot at it...

Frequently, that is not accurate.  CM2 is NOT always WYSIWYG despite many claims.

The question is WHO can see the enemy target?  If the 3rd ammo bearer of an HMG crew can see the target, the UNIT may appear to see the target, but if the HMG gunner cannot see it he will not fire the HMG.

In the case of a tank, perhaps the CO or loader can see the enemy, but the gunner cannot see it and so does not fire.

Well I'll just assume that just because you have an enemy tank in LOS and targeted it, other unknown factors could come in to play.  However not sure I buy your example of:

After all the crew are only feet or inches from each other.  If the commander or loader or even the driver can see the enemy tank don't you think they would yell it loud enough that everyone knew?  I can understand a delay in firing when not all the crew see the enemy tank initially but I had a number of situations where my tank sat there for about 40 or more seconds not firing while the enemy tank fired 4 times, hitting on their final shot.

You should be ok if you follow the usual practice to update your game during the orders phase.

As alternative, you can create a new install in a new directory and have a 2.02 and a 2.10 install on your machine at the same time.

Sorry but I would like to clarify what you said.  I have now downloaded update 2.10.  Do I run the replay of the latest PBEM turn, end the replay phase and then save the game at that point?  Then extract the update files to CMFI?   Alternatively, if you could post a link to the "usual practice" instructions that would be much appreciated.

  5. I am currently playing Wittman's Demise PBEM and have a couple of questions.  I am the Brits/Canucks and a few times one of my tanks had a German tank in it's LOS.  I targeted the tank and the red target line appeared.  However, the tank never fired while the German tank fired 4 times finally hitting and destroying my tank on it's 4th shot.  I guess there is a random element to whether my tank fires even though I have the enemy targeted?  Other examples were German tanks moving toward one of my tanks which was stationery yet the German got off the first shot destroying my tank.  This encounter was at close range.

If I have  one or two men behind a bush in hide mode I assume that enemy tanks/infantry at range will have a difficult time spotting them?  I set an arc of fire for them just a couple of meters in front of their position so they wouldn't fire.  Their purpose is to observe the movement of  enemy tanks.  I believe that different types of terrain provide different levels of concealment, is that right?  I have also found that men in a building unless they are facing the opposite way are spotted easily.  I assume it is because they are at windows where they can be seen.

I am also playing a scenario in CMFI PBEM where I have some 88's.  I moved the ammo bearers directly beside the 88's and thought that by clicking on the Acquire command the 88's would replenish their ammo but that particular command is greyed out.  How do the 88's get the ammo from the ammo bearers?

Thanks in advance for any replies or comments.  i will be buying Rome to Victory as well.

This issue has been reported and fixed according to the post in this thread from BFCElvis. When the patch to the patch, the patchy patch, comes out, this problem should go away.

So, has this "bug" been fixed or is there a patch to fix the patch coming out?  Your first sentence referencing BFCElvis indicates that it has been fixed but then your second sentence contradicts this.  Regardless, I consider it to be a signficant issue.

  7. About half of each squad was killed.  I was talking to my friend who is playing the Americans and he told me he was using area fire as he couldn't spot me  so that really indicates to me that my squads panicked.  Looks to me like they really need to revisit the fix that was supposed to be in the patch.

  8. I am the Germans and  had two veteran squads behind hedgerows.  The Yanks who were not behind cover.  After about two minutes of mutual fire,  one squad had one casualty and one wounded.  At that point the squad left their cover and started running in the direction of the Yanks in front of the hedgerow as there was an opening with a fence beside their position.  The other squad did something similar about a minute later.  The end result was that both squads were decimated.

  9. It was my understanding that the patch for Game Engine 4 corrected the issue of units running out in to the open when under fire instead of remaining in their positions and using the terrain they are in for cover.  I am playing a PBEM game of Carentan which has lots of hedgerows as the Germans.  A number of times I have had units hidden behind hedgerows run in to the open toward the enemy when they came under fire.  The unit info does not indicate panic but in some cases it says "tired".  Maybe this still a bug?

  10. Thanks for your replies.  I am the Germans and the MG is a MG42.  I am waiting to see how effective it is as I read something in the Engine 4.0 patch about increased effectiveness for the MG42 if I can acquire a LOS.  Hedgerows are always a puzzle when it comes to LOS as well.

So the advantage of placing a unit in Hide mode is that it should be more difficult for the enemy to spot it and harder for the enemy to hit the units with their fire.  On the flip side, it will be more difficult for your unit to spot the enemy and fire on them too.

The scenario I am playing is Carentan, with a friend by PBEM.

  11. Yes I had it deployed and it had been at that spot for some time.  The way I check LOS is click on combat and then Target moving it around to see where I can fire.  What is the LOS tool that you referred to.  Also I normally choose Hide for my infantry.  Would infantry in Hide mode have a decreased spotting ability?   The enemy were shooting at my MG so I chose the Slow command and moved away from the hedgerow since I was unable to shoot back.

  12. Currently playing a scenario taking place in hedgerow country.  I have had a number of puzzling line of sight situations.  For example, when I click on a friendly unit, an enemy unit becomes visible but I can't target it.  I would have thought that if I could see an enemy unit, I should be able to fire at it.

A couple of turns ago I placed a machine gun in a spot and checked it's line of sight by choosing Target.  Now when I choose the machine gun and choose Target there is no longer a line of sight along the exact line I previously chose.

  13. I logged in this morning and discovered that the patch for Game Engine 4.0 had been released.  I have CMBN v4.00, CMFI v2.00, and CMFB v2.00 all are Game Engine 4.0.  I am in the middle of a pbem CMBN game.  I am going to follow the instructions about installing the patch for pbem games posted earlier in this thread.

I see there is something about a bug in the patch so my question is, should I be installing the patch for my three games now or should I wait?

    Thanks.

  14. We just started playing Carentan H2H by PBEM and beginning from the start of the scenario, German HQs that had no line of sight to hardly any parts of the battlefield were able to call in barrages that also began in the first minute to whatever areas they wanted.  I called in both area and linear barrages.  It was like TRPs without the markers and no delay for the mortar rounds to start landing.  I didn't know that this could be incorporated in to a scenario.

  15. The barrage was the most inaccurate I have had playing CMBN and I have been playing the Combat Mission series for 20 years.  Throughout the time I called the barrage to when shells first started landing, there was a green line when I clicked on the spotter which was an HQ,   to the target.  Anyway, just curious and I have an on map mortar scheduled to hit the same 88 in the next minute so it will be interesting to see how accurate it is.  The spotter is another HQ.  Maybe forward observer units are the most accurate?

  16. I am currently playing a scenario by PBEM, Attack on Verriers Ridge as the Canadians.  With 24 minutes left, I called for an artillery barrage by off map artillery and there was a 14 minute delay.  The fire order was a point barrage.  When the barrage took place it was not landing even remotely close to the target yet my spotting unit maintained line of sight throughout.  The target was an 88 on top of the ridge and I was wondering if maybe when I indicated the point that it actually went over the ridge?  I have never seen a point barrage so wildly inaccurate.

  17. I just surrendered in our second playing of this scenario as the Germans.  A second major victory for the Yanks.  The Yanks have 30 tanks while the Germans start with something like 4 AT guns and 3 STUG III.  They get one Panther and 2 more Stug III with about 1/4 of the scenario playing time left.  The Panther reinforcement is screwy in that if you give it any movement order it will ignore the movement plot and move directly to the convoy exit area and then disappear off the map.  If you don't give it any movement plot it will move on it's own away from the convoy exit area.  I continued playing as I thought the Panther could cause some damage but after taking out one Yank light tank, a Sherman took it out with one frontal shot.  I assume it was a lucky shot as you would think a Panther would be difficult for a Sherman to take out unless it hit it from the rear or side.  No it was not a firefly.  Regardless,  that added insult to injury after hanging on for about 40 minutes with the Germans,  so I surrendered.

I don't mind playing scenarios that are not "balanced" as that can be subjective but this one is a tough one for the Germans.  Still it was action filled from start to finish as I knocked out 21 Yank tanks.  Unfortunately he had 10 left!

  18. I opened a ticket.  I don't know who Steve is but If I did I would have contacted him directly like you did.  Here is why I think it has something to do with the online purchases of my friend and I.  Around Xmas he bought games from both Battlefront and another company.  He used his wife's card for the Battlefront purchases but his card for the other company.  The fradulent charges appeared on his wife's card.  I bought the VP and BP using my credit card just after new years and fradulent charges appeared on my card as well.  If I am correct about Battlefront changing servers recently then it is too much of a coincidence that including you we now have 3 reported incidents.  My only other credit card usage in December was my monthly automatic charge from my cell phone company and a online purchase from a another game company but that occurred after the fradulent charges.
